I am a college professor with over 10 years experience teaching in higher education (and have loved every minute of it). I am an artist, having received my Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where I also taught Sculpture. I've taught a broad range of topics, from Art History to to Web Design. In addition to Art, I love History, Philosophy, and geeking out on Math & Technology. More than anything, I love to learn, and I hope to collaborate on a learning experience that is as much fun as it is challenging.

Throughout my life I've always loved to learn. Whether it be a new technology that just came out or something to further expand my knowledge of the world-- I've dived head-first into it. I am passionate about Computer Science and the related fields, and love to spread my knowledge to others. I am currently attending San Jose State University to achieve my degree in Software Engineering with a focus on graphics programming and Machine Learning/AI. What I believe makes me such a great tutor in Computer Science areas is that I taught myself programming six years ago, so I understand all the struggles that someone who is trying to learn programming are going through. In my free time I'm often playing (or creating) video games, or researching the latest technology to see if I can work it into my life and experiment with it.

I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of California, Riverside and a dual Master of Arts in English and Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Chapman University in Orange, California. In between studies, I began my experience as a tutor for the "No Child Left Behind" program tutoring students K-8 in Reading and Language Arts in order to help them improve study habits and standardized test scores in a one-on-one setting.Upon entering graduate school at Chapman University, I began working as an English tutor for the writing center on campus. I worked one-on-one with undergraduates and graduate students of various majors in order to ensure their writing assignments (short and long papers, theses, resumes, and personal statements) were following the given prompts.I tutor any category related to the field of EnglishReading, Writing (both academic and creative), Literature, and Language Arts. My favorite subject to tutor is writing because my belief, from personal experience, is that fostering a strong and confident authorial voice is of the utmost importance for a student and it becomes applicable to all career choices one might make. In my spare time, my hobbies tend to include things that continue to foster my own authorial voice and those around me writing music and poetry, publishing a literary zine, reading leisurely, and watching films.

The ability to articulate one’s thoughts fluidly and convincingly in writing and in speech – that is, to construct logical, coherent, well-researched arguments – is an essential skill for students to build for college. Using words and language effectively is crucial to students’ success in any major or discipline, and beyond graduation in the job market or graduate school. I teach and tutor from an honest enthusiasm for words, language and the writing process. I work with students from elementary school through college on building fundamental reading and writing skills, completing assignments above standard, and finding their own voice through the written word and oral response. I tutor a range of subjects with a focus on language arts – for example:• Reading: both elementary skills and critical reading for high school or college students; reading strategies for dense texts and complex assignments.• Writing: grammar and punctuation, including for ACT/SAT; introduction to essay writing (thesis statement, hypotheses, supporting claims, concrete details); advanced essay writing; college application statements; editing.• French: reading, writing and speaking in the French language, beginning through advanced; grammar, conjugations, pronunciation, conversation, culture.I completed my M.A. at Yale University (African Studies, 2014), and my B.A. magna cum laude from Smith College (American Studies & Dance, 2009). During college, I studied in Paris, France for a full year, and successfully applied for a Fulbright Grant that allowed me to do ten months of research on contemporary dance in Burkina Faso (in francophone West Africa) after graduating. My teaching experience includes serving as a T.A. at Yale College, Santa Barbara City College, and Education Française Bay Area, and teaching study skills and ACT preparation courses at College Track Oakland. Independently, I have tutored English skills and French for elementary and high school students. I am proud to say that I had strong success in teaching French to a high school student with learning differences, using a completely oral and visual approach. In addition to my teaching experience and my own academic track, I have worked on various projects as a grant-writer, editor, research assistant and translator. My verbal GRE score is in the 99th percentile, and as for foreign languages I am fluent in French, have a strong background in Spanish, Arabic and German, scored 100% on the First Year National Latin Test, and have recently taken up Portuguese while studying dance and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Brazil for two months.I hold students to high standards, but with a light humor and sensitivity to each student’s unique situation. I believe that developing personal discipline, organization and accountability can improve students’ experience of school and make the pleasure of learning itself more available.
