I have been teaching for over 10 years and have loved every minute of it. I knew I wanted to be a teacher in the 5th grade. I enjoying helping students believe in their abilities and strengthening what they are weak in. Working through these weaknesses and getting them to believe in themselves and what they are capable of opens so many doors to them and makes anything they put their mind to possible in the future. I went to Sonoma State University for my BA in History and went on to Sacramento State for my credential and some graduate courses. I have since worked at an independent study charter school for the past 7.5 years and am now substituting for some of the local districts.I look forward to making a difference in more student's lives and helping the achieve the education they deserve!

I have been lucky enough to have many great experience so far in my life. I was a Korean translator in the US Army for eight years. After serving in the Army, I went to Riverside Community College and then San Diego State, where I majored in English and minored in Asian Studies. I've since earned a teaching credential and Master's in Education from National University, and worked as a high school English and Spanish teacher for most of 2001-2013. Outside of “work,” I like to travel and to learn foreign languages. I've traveled a fair bit in Asia and Europe, and hope see South America soon. I live near San Diego State University now, and have lived in Oregon, Pennsylvania, and various places around the country. I also love old cars and reading, especially historical fiction.I can tutor English, Spanish, Social Studies, Math (up through Algebra I), and standardized test preparation. I especially like tutoring Spanish, literature, and history. I really enjoy tutoring because I get to help people and I love learning! I believe that it is easiest to learn when we can make personal connections with what we are studying, so I seek out ways to connect the learning to your experiences. In my studies, I learned a lot about the disparities that students from different demographics face when providing and receiving feedback on engineering design. Subsequently, I took classes on Equity in STEM Education to learn more about what I could do as an educator to practice more inclusive pedagogies. I then took up a leadership position in Harvey Mudd's Office of Institutional Diversity as a Mentor and Tutor for their summer bridge program. In this role, I helped support incoming first-year students from marginalized backgrounds by counseling them through emotional crises, leadership development, and countless hours of academic tutoring. To continue mentoring and tutoring, I joined Harvey Mudd's Homework Hotline team, where I assisted K-12 students with homework over the phone. This experience equipped me with training that covered common core, active listening, and effective over-the-phone communication. More importantly, I learned to empathize and connect with a diverse set of students as well as parents.Now, I am working as a member of the Varsity Tutors to continue my work supporting students who desire a strong academic foundation.
