I'm very passionate about working with students to help them better understand mathematics. I have a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and I am in Graduate school pursuing a Masters in Adolescent Math Education. In the next 2 years I hope to start Teaching math on the middle school or high school level. I hope to give students a strong understanding of math and change those students that "hate" math into students who at least persevere through it because they understand it's importance.Outside of academics I like to keep myself well rounded. I am very active with my puppy who is a few months old; going hiking, running, and being on the water. I also stay active by playing and coaching volleyball. Other hobbies I have in my free time are weight lifting, reading, computer gaming, and cooking.

I'm a PhD in the molecular sciences. Although I've done a lot of schoolwork, I appreciate the difficulty some students have with difficult subjects (mine was Calculus), and trying to concentrate when studying is the last thing I want to think about. My goal is to help you plan out your studies so that you can maximize your potential with the minimum amount of work. Sometimes it's hard for some teachers to break down a complex topic for burgeoning learners because they themselves approach it from a higher level and can't think at a low enough level. After a year of science outreach in high-need Nashville public schools, I've found that I have a knack for breaking down complex concepts to an easy-to-digest format that incorporates math and literature comprehension into real scientific problems.Fortunately, the more I learned about a subject matter, the easier it has been to find meaning and see how it fits into a bigger picture.I want to help you understand things in a big-picture way with real-life examples (usually in the hard sciences). This hopefully will help you with comprehension and memorization.

Born in England, raised in Malta, I have a global perspective and an appreciation for cultural diversity. I am a "people person" who works well with others both as a leader and team-player. Empowering students and moving them beyond "I can't" has always been the hallmark of my teaching, so much so that DePaul's Alpha Lambda Delta National Honors Society named me as "Faculty of the Year" in 2000.Even before "experiential learning" became a clich, I was providing "hands-on," sensory-based activities for my students; before "diversity training" became a mandate, I exposed my students to texts which focused on racism, sexism, homophobia, colonialism and anti-Semitism; years before the English speaking world caught onto the pedagogical theories of Paulo Freire, I insisted on student-centered learning, creating a safe environment in which my students could explore their deepest thoughts, sharing what was appropriate with their peers. My students are motivated and engaged with their studies; together we form a circle of learning in which all are expert critical thinkers. My task, as I see it, is to facilitate, encourage, and stay informed. A hand-written message from Mother Teresa, faithfully carried from Calcutta by a former student, hangs on my study wall: "Liz, Teach for the glory of God." And that's what I endeavor to do.

AP French Tutor • +8 Subjects
I am a graduate from Baylor University, located in Waco, Texas. I received a Bachelor of Arts in French as well as in International Studies. I tutored many of my colleagues during my time at Baylor. I also volunteered my time as a tutor at the local middle school while I was in high school. I tutor in French, a subject I am incredibly passionate about. I initially studied French to get in touch with my French heritage and fell in love with francophone cultures, literature, and more recently, linguistics. I enjoy tutoring in French not only because of my personal enjoyment of the subject, but also because I understand all of the advantages of being proficient in a foreign language. Not only does learning a foreign language allow the ability to communicate with thousands of people in their native or socio-political tongue, but it also allows people to think and learn in an engaging way that is unique to language. There is a mix of patterns as well as abstract thought, working different areas of the brain. The idea of tutoring a subject that has so many complexities and benefits truly excites me. As a tutor, I generally have two goals. First and foremost, I provide individual attention to the pupil according to their individual learning style(s) and needs. I also tend to teach material in a way that will assist them in future lessons, primarily by revealing patterns rather than stressing memorization. Additionally, I recognize the reality of a student needing to improve their grades. My technique to improve grades involves a review of past tests and homework to develop an understanding of the teacher’s primary learning goals. This also helps me to get an idea of a pupil’s thought processes. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, baking, and traveling both around the world and around this amazing country, both for business and for pleasure.

After being a stay at home mom for 15 years, I went back to school to obtain my teaching licensure and my Reading Endorsement for grades K-12 at Ashland University. During my time at Ashland, I was required to complete several hours of tutoring for both high school and elementary students and found that I love helping students on a one on one basis. I have been tutoring for 18 months. I believe in teaching to the individual student. I have developed a hybrid approach to teaching which incorporates different aspects of various styles and gives me the flexibility to tailor a personal style that is right for each student and their coursework. My favorite subject to tutor is reading. Reading was difficult for me as a student, especially during high school and college. I feel that so much time is spent teaching students to learn to read and never enough time teaching them to read to learn. I believe that if a student can be successfully in reading, including comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary, then they can be successful in every other aspect of life!I am available for tutoring at the Elementary level in the subjects of English, reading, writing, grammar, phonics, and mathematics. In my spare time, I enjoy reading suspenseful mysteries, swimming, running, and even still compete in Irish Step Dancing.

I received my Bachelor of Arts in English and Spanish from Howard University and worked as an educator and as a communications administrator for several years post college. During my career as a communications administrator, I enrolled at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in pursuance of my Fashion Design Certificate. My education from MassArt inspired me to become a wardrobe consultant and to found A Balanced Wardrobe LLC. Though I've transitioned from academia to business and fashion, I still rely heavily on my reading and writing skills. These skills transcend all professions, as they are fundamental to our ability to learn and to communicate effectively on paper and in-person. During my years in education, I engaged with many students who struggled in reading and writing, and typically, these same students struggled in other subjects; in math they struggled to read word problems and in science they struggled to write their lab results. Working with these students gave me first-hand experience at how to help students strengthen their comprehension without hurting their confidence. Over time, I found that patience, consistent positive reinforcement and persistent redirection are key, and it is these same techniques that I utilize with my Varsity Tutors students. Without reading and writing skills, I would have never been able to traverse so many different fields and discover my passion, and through tutoring, I hope to help my students achieve the same.
