I have a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and I am in Graduate school pursuing a Masters in Adolescent Math Education. In the next 2 years I hope to start Teaching math on the middle school or high school level. I hope to give students a strong understanding of math and change those students that "hate" math into students who at least persevere through it because they understand it's importance.Outside of academics I like to keep myself well rounded. I am very active with my puppy who is a few months old; going hiking, running, and being on the water. I also stay active by playing and coaching volleyball. I am a graduate from Baylor University, located in Waco, Texas. I received a Bachelor of Arts in French as well as in International Studies. I tutored many of my colleagues during my time at Baylor. I also volunteered my time as a tutor at the local middle school while I was in high school. I tutor in French, a subject I am incredibly passionate about. After being a stay at home mom for 15 years, I went back to school to obtain my teaching licensure and my Reading Endorsement for grades K-12 at Ashland University. During my time at Ashland, I was required to complete several hours of tutoring for both high school and elementary students and found that I love helping students on a one on one basis. I have been tutoring for 18 months. I believe in teaching to the individual student. During my career as a communications administrator, I enrolled at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in pursuance of my Fashion Design Certificate. My education from MassArt inspired me to become a wardrobe consultant and to found A Balanced Wardrobe LLC. Though I've transitioned from academia to business and fashion, I still rely heavily on my reading and writing skills. These skills transcend all professions, as they are fundamental to our ability to learn and to communicate effectively on paper and in-person. During my years in education, I engaged with many students who struggled in reading and writing, and typically, these same students struggled in other subjects; in math they struggled to read word problems and in science they struggled to write their lab results. Working with these students gave me first-hand experience at how to help students strengthen their comprehension without hurting their confidence. Over time, I found that patience, consistent positive reinforcement and persistent redirection are key, and it is these same techniques that I utilize with my Varsity Tutors students. Without reading and writing skills, I would have never been able to traverse so many different fields and discover my passion, and through tutoring, I hope to help my students achieve the same.
