I have always been extremely appreciative of the immeasurable impact that my teachers and professors have made on my academic, professional, and personal life. As an educator, I hope to accomplish and achieve the same type of positive impact on my students. I believe that the knowledge I have acquired through my education in China, my time at SUNY Geneseo as an Accounting major, as well as my professional experience in the Finance industry allowed me to become a fluent Mandarin speaker and writer, and also to have formed a solid knowledge base in Financial Accounting, Economics, Math, and Professional Writing, all of which are subjects I wish to teach. Over the past few years, I have worked with both college students as well as a young child. I served as a mentor and tutor to Financial Accounting students while I was still in college myself, I prepared fellow students for exams, and assisted with completion of assignments and longer term projects. I've also enjoyed working with a young child in Mandarin Chinese. I aim to always create interesting and engaging curricula to encourage the student to develop and exercise speaking, listening, and simple reading skills, at the same time encourage and cultivate a passion and curiosity for the Chinese culture. Through my experiences, I have developed great tutoring approaches, to always allow students to express themselves and to always facilitate hard work and thorough understanding of subject matters. I not only want to help students get high scores, but also for them to be able to think critically, logically, and analytically. Outside of my academic and professional life, I enjoy film, poetry, books, art, and food.

I just graduated from Columbia University, so the experience of institutional learning is still very fresh for me! I'm able to relate to students and provide a current perspective on education.I have experience tutoring English at ESL level, in reading, speaking, and writing. Having learnt several languages myself and being a trilingual speaker (Cantonese, English, Mandarin), I understand the challenges of navigating between languages and am familiar with ways to overcome them. In addition to this, I have taught beginner violin and basic music theory.I've always developed good relationships with my students and their parents, and I strongly believe that this helps the learning process a lot!

Hello, I am really excited to become a tutor at Varsity Tutors. Currently, I am retired from a career in accounting. I have a master degree in accounting from University of Texas (Arlington), a master degree in education from Harvard University and a Bachelor degree in Psychology from National Taiwan University. I was born and raised in Taiwan but have lived in the U.S. for almost 34 years.I have worked professionally for 26 years. I started at an entry level job and held a senior management position when I retired. I have experiences in full ranges of accounting functions and business operation. Among all those experiences I appreciate the most is the opportunities to coach and mentor my staff. This led me to pursue a teaching position at a community college where I taught financial accounting for a semester. Even though I was working full-time at the time, I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it very fulfilling.I also have taught at Chinese school when my children were young. Teaching my American born children Chinese also provided me with special understandings on learning Chinese as a foreigner. (Yes, I consider my children foreigners.) I believe language and culture are inseparable. While I am teaching Chinese language, I will also introduce Chinese people and culture to enhance the learning experience.I believe the best learning approach should be based on individual and customized to his/her needs. In addition to the accounting degree, I believe my education background in Psychology and Education have further prepared me to achieve this goal. So let's get started and work together to achieve your goals.

I'm a MA candidate in International Economics and China Studies at Johns Hopkins, and an aspiring foreign policy professional. My approach to tutoring emphasizes big picture ideas and building a student's sense of intuition. My best professors and teachers have emphasized that it takes more than memorization to be a good learner. Likewise, I try to make students comfortable with the subjects that they learn and help them feel like they're capable of navigating subjects on their own when studying, practicing, or doing homework. Some of my subjects include Economics, English, World History, and Chinese. Because my professional field emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach, I like to stay curious about these subjects and consider myself a lifelong learner of just about any subject, both quantitative and qualitative. Outside of tutoring and projects in my field, I enjoy reading novels and short fiction, watching baseball and baking batches of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.

Passionate and caring educator who has 7-year tutoring experience. Tutored students from Korea, Japan, Holland, France and America while studying at Beijing Language and Culture University. Taught at a blue ribbon Elementary school children Mandarin for a year and was so popular that was asked to stay for two more years. Taught freshmen and sophomore Mandarin while at Carthage College and helped one student win JET and CLIS program opportunity, another student win a second prize at a Mandarin speech contest in Madison. Now teaching at a Mandarin Immersion Preschool in Minnetonka.I believe in experiential learning and self-motivation. Thus I individualize each student's learning plan and make learning a fun experience so that the student is motived to learn and explore more. Language should be acquired in an immersion environment, especially for young children. Hope I can help more children realize how much potential they have once they are pushed a little to be self-motived.

I recently graduated from Haverford College with a major in East Asian Languages and Cultures and a minor in Chinese. I am currently considering graduate school in China as a way of immersing myself in Chinese culture and broadening the range of my academic experience. I have tutored students since my time in high school at Walter Payton College Prep. My first tutoring job came about when my math teacher at the time asked me to work with three students in Trigonometry and Algebra 2. Since that first tutoring experience, I always knew that I wanted to work with students to help them better understand their course material. In college, I worked with many classmates who were struggling in Chinese by having regular conversations with them and showing different methods of learning the languageit's much easier than you think, I swear! Chinese is my favorite subject to tutor. Not only is the language itself beautifully methodical, but also the experience of learning and teaching another language along with its immense history and culture is extremely rewarding. For instance, there's nothing better than finding a sense of humor in another language. My teaching philosophy is to create as much student engagement as possible and to constantly improve upon the methods of engagement. When learning Chinese, it is critical for the student to bridge the gap between hearing the language in their head and speaking it out loud.Outside of academia, my interests revolve around making all kinds of things: composing music, cooking Chinese dishes, building sculptures, or anything at all! I find it is extremely therapeutic and important to put under-utilized creative energy to use. I also really enjoy graphic novels and science fiction literature. They are great sources of inspiration for the music and art I make.
