Gerard's MBA coursework covered the financial reporting and analysis side of business, giving him a practical lens on topics like income statements, cost behavior, and managerial accounting decisions. He teaches accounting as a decision-making tool — connecting ledger work back to the business questions it's designed to answer, which keeps the material from feeling like rote number-shuffling.

Debits, credits, and journal entries follow strict logical rules, but most introductory courses move too fast for students to internalize the why behind each entry. Rahi approaches accounting the way an engineer approaches a system — tracing how every transaction flows through the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement so the structure clicks.
Debits and credits finally make sense when someone explains the underlying logic instead of just handing you T-account templates. Mustafa approaches accounting by grounding each journal entry in the accounting equation, so students understand why an asset increase pairs with a liability or equity change. His analytical rigor from NYU Law carries over well to the detail-oriented nature of balance sheets and income statements.
Studying finance and statistics at NYU means Eric encounters accounting principles from the other side — as the language businesses use to communicate financial health. That perspective lets him teach concepts like the accounting equation, income statements, and balance sheets by showing what the numbers mean in practice, not just how to record them. Rated 5.0 by students.
Akanksha earned her B.S. Honors in Finance from UConn's School of Business and has cleared CFA Levels 1 and 2, both of which test accounting principles extensively — from reading income statements to understanding depreciation methods and inventory valuation. She breaks down debits, credits, and journal entries in a way that connects the mechanics to what the numbers actually mean for a business.
Debits, credits, and journal entries click faster when someone explains the logic behind the ledger instead of just the rules. Ilyas studied accounting as part of his Business Administration and Finance degree at UC Berkeley, so he can walk through everything from the accounting equation to financial statement preparation with real-world context baked in.
I'm a tango and bachata dancer and a realistic portrait sketcher. I like hiking and was lucky enough to reach Mt. Everest base camp. I'm planning to have some training, so that I can reach the top in the not too far future.
I am CFA candidate. The subjects I tutor are math (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus), statistics, finance, economics, SAT Math and LSAT prep.
I am currently a Full-time student at the Atlantic Acting School. Before I took the leap into performing arts, I was an auditor for 3 years with Grant Thornton where I received my ACA qualification (British equivalent of CPA). It's been a challenging but exciting transition.
I am working as a Cross-border consultant and consult for businesses who want to get into the Chinese market and do business with Chinese companies. Language and culture is a big part of my life both professionally and personally. My articles in mandarin have been published in multiple newspapers and magazines when I was studying in China. Chinese literature and history have always been my greatest passion. I want to help everyone really understand the Chinese culture and learn to use this beautiful language to express themselves whenever they are traveling, studying, doing business with Chinese. I am really good at other subjects too, I passed the GMAT exam with 99% math/quantitative section. Math has always been one of strongest academic subject too. Tutoring is a great responsibility, further to me it can also be one of life's most rewarding experiences. I am naturally attracted to different cultures and love to share mine with everyone. I was also a Junior Olympian (swimmer) for 8 years and love to go outdoors as I love nature.
I am a two-time graduate of the University of Virginia. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Economics in May 2021 and recently completed my Master's of Science in Business with a concentration in Finance in June 2022. In my time as an undergraduate and graduate student at UVA, I had the opportunity to study abroad in London, Barcelona, and Copenhagen. These unique experiences familiarized me with working and learning in diverse environments and developed the holistic approach I now bring to problem-solving. Since graduation, I have moved to New York City and will soon start as a Financial Analyst at a top international law firm. In my free time, I feel enthusiastic about giving back what I've learned to help students advance their skills and gain confidence in their ability to perform in a variety of subjects. From assisting my little brother with his Math homework to guiding my classmates through a difficult assignment, I have experience working with students of all ages and skill levels and am committed to helping them achieve their full potential. I can tutor a broad range of subjects, however, I am most passionate about Economics, Math, and Standardized Testing. As someone who went through tutoring for Standardized Testing myself, I know just how stressful and frustrating the process can be at times. I hope to use a fun and patient approach to sharing the techniques I learned so I can help alleviate some of the anxiety surrounding Standardized Testing. I am a strong believer that education can help students find success in any subject they are struggling with and I look forward to working with you.

Frequently Asked Questions
In a classroom with an 11.3:1 student-teacher ratio, it's difficult for teachers to address each student's specific gaps—whether that's foundational concepts like debits and credits or advanced topics like consolidation accounting. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to diagnose exactly where you're struggling, adjust the pace to match your learning speed, and focus on the accounting principles that will have the biggest impact on your grades and understanding.
Many students struggle with understanding the fundamental accounting equation and how transactions affect financial statements, which creates problems in more advanced topics. Others find it difficult to connect theoretical concepts to real-world applications, or they rush through journal entries and adjusting entries without fully grasping the logic behind them. Personalized tutoring helps you build a solid foundation in these core areas so that complex topics like consolidations, partnerships, and tax accounting become manageable.
Students in New York schools often need support with introductory accounting courses covering the accounting cycle, financial statement preparation, and basic managerial accounting. Depending on your grade level and course, you might also need help with intermediate accounting topics like asset valuation and liability accounting, or advanced areas like auditing and tax accounting. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who understand New York's curriculum standards and can target the specific topics your school emphasizes.
Your first session is an assessment and planning meeting. The tutor will review your current coursework, identify your strongest and weakest areas, and understand your specific goals—whether that's improving your grade, preparing for an exam, or building confidence with a particular topic. From there, you'll develop a personalized plan that focuses on the accounting concepts where you need the most support and builds toward measurable improvement.
Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who have strong backgrounds in accounting, whether through professional experience, advanced degrees, or proven teaching expertise. Many have worked in accounting or finance roles, passed professional certifications like the CPA exam, or have years of experience tutoring accounting at various levels. Each tutor is selected based on their ability to explain complex accounting concepts clearly and adapt to your learning style.
Progress in accounting is highly measurable: improved test scores, better performance on problem sets and case studies, stronger understanding of financial statements, and increased confidence tackling new topics independently. Your tutor will track which accounting concepts you've mastered and which still need work, adjusting the focus as you improve. Many students see noticeable grade improvements within a few weeks of consistent, focused tutoring on their specific weak areas.
Yes. Beyond introductory accounting, tutors can help with intermediate and advanced topics including consolidation accounting, partnership accounting, non-profit accounting, auditing, and tax accounting. Whether you're preparing for the CPA exam, tackling upper-level college courses, or need support in a specialized accounting area, Varsity Tutors can connect you with a tutor who has expertise in that specific field.
Scheduling is flexible and personalized to fit your needs. Whether you need weekly sessions to build skills over time, intensive help before an exam, or occasional support as you encounter challenging topics, you can work with your tutor to find a schedule that works. Many students find that consistent, regular sessions produce better long-term results than cramming, but the frequency and timing are entirely up to you.
