"Today the student worked on some homework for his algebra and health classes. For algebra he went over how to make a frequency table and a histogram. It took him a minute to recall how to make these, but once he did he was able to do very well."
"Today, the student and I continued converting her paper from outline format into true paragraph form. We discussed how changing her thesis yesterday affected the rest of her ideas, created new rough drafts of her 1st and 2nd body paragraphs. We also talked a bit more about the general formula for writing a body paragraph, focusing specifically topic sentences and transitions. We plan to pick up tomorrow with her 3rd body paragraph, and hope to work through drafting her conclusion as well."
"Today, we used "five chess" to warm up, and the students liked the game a lot, so we played three rounds. In each round, we practiced colors, numbers, and a few instruction verbs. Then, we moved on to the animal book to review the names of all the animals, and I tested them at the end. Finally, we did the "learning app" to practice identifying the words as well as writing of the characters."
"Today, we worked on design of experiments, identifying factors and the levels of the factors. We identified different design attributes such as nested, crossed, completely random, and block designs. We also discussed the advantages of designed experiments over observational, and we discussed the implications of correlation vs. causation."
"We studied how to find synonyms and answer questions about the main ideas in literary passages. The student has great success in determining what part of the reading passage to focus on, and is skimming material effectively. He also cemented understanding on how to find percentages. He is learning how to answer questions in coordinate geometry. The student will work on assignments in the SSAT prep guide, as well as studying concepts related to coordinate geometry."
"We worked on dividing fractions. Then, we worked on writing nonfiction essays. The student is a very positive student and motivated to learn. I will be sending her some transition sentences that she can use when writing nonfiction. We discussed that she needs to take the ISEE diagnostic tests before Friday and that I will review the results and have a plan in place. She wants to make sure that she knows which questions she got incorrect on the tests, which I told her that I would share that with her and explain why."
