I've been a university professor for the past five years and have been tutoring for as long as I can remember. I began tutoring informally while I was still in high school, helping friends get ready for their SATs, helping them with assignments. I realized quickly that I was suddenly helping half of my school so I decided to make some fliers, and some money, and offer my tutoring to anyone and everyone in my hometown. Suffice to say, some odd years have gone by since then and now, even as a full-time professor, I find myself enjoying the experience of tutoring and helping students on an individual level enough to continue doing it. With a background in the sciences and mathematics, and a graduate degree in philosophy I'm incredibly well-rounded in terms of what I'm capable of teaching and moreover, have a generally positive pedagogical approach to everything; I really do love teaching. Even fields in which I have little experience become a contest with myself to master solely for the sake of helping a student. I have extensive experience in reading, writing, and editing (I've been published several times over as both head author and editor) and its something that I truly love to do. I currently hold three Undergraduate degrees in Mathematics, Physics, and Linguistics, as well as two Graduate degrees in Philosophy and Theology. From basic English to advanced Banjo I look forward to engaging in any assignment that anyone may have for me!

I am a third year electrical engineering student at Princeton University, with a focus in applied physics, and minors in German studies and history. I want to tutor because I am always excited about learning new things, and I want to share this with students of all ages. I find that this way, a student can do difficult work, excel, and feel both accomplished and happy. I have a broad range of specialties, from physics, to programming in Java and C, to German, to test prep and college applications help. I also love workshopping all kinds of writing, whether personal or academic. Some of my qualifications include physics research at a Max Planck Institute and acceptances to Harvard and UC Berkeley. I have experience teaching environmental science to children at a botanical garden and volunteering as a reading tutor for elementary schoolers behind grade level.

I am an experienced and well-qualified essay coach, and a tutor in language arts and German. I also tutor students who are preparing for the SAT. I earned my B.A. in Comparative Literature from Columbia University and an M.A. in German from UC Berkeley, where I taught college German and received training in foreign language pedagogy. I love to learn, I am drawn to travel, and the experiences I have had enrich my work as a tutor. For me, tutoring is about more than making the grade or getting the right score; I always strive to foster insights and new skills that will help my students take charge of their own education.

I'm a PhD at Harvard studying German philosophy and classics (Greek and Latin). Next year, I will be starting law school to pursue my professional passion, tax law. I am deeply committed to the language and LSAT skills I've developed and I love to tutor students of all levels in these subjects. I can't imagine a life without teaching. My favorite part of teaching is helping students come to love -- or at least appreciate -- the details that make up complex subject matters. My favorite moment with any student is when the student realizes how fascinating a subject matter is after really mastering all of the "dry" details. When my students start internalizing the LSAT or languages I am teaching them, I know I am doing my job.

I'm New York City born and raised. I graduated from the University of Chicago last year with a degree in East Asian Languages and Civilizations. I am developing my own teaching methods to evolve traditional East Asian and French language acquisition, and to do this I need even more experience. My course of study has been directed at learning as much as I can about the culture, economy, and history of East Asia, China and Japan in particular. I view myself as someone who is entrepreneurial, collegial, individually motivated to produce high quality work, as well as foster a love of the subject which I teach. I am compassionate and enjoy working with both children and adults. I believe I have something to learn from everyone I meet.

Frequently Asked Questions

German verb conjugation is challenging because verbs change based on person, tense, mood, and whether they're regular or irregular—and there are many irregular verbs to memorize. A tutor breaks this down systematically, teaching you to recognize patterns (like weak vs. strong verbs) rather than memorizing every form, then uses targeted practice to build automaticity so conjugation becomes intuitive rather than a constant mental burden.

German cases determine how nouns, articles, and adjectives change based on their grammatical role in a sentence—nominative for subjects, accusative for direct objects, dative for indirect objects, and genitive for possession. A tutor teaches you to recognize case patterns through real sentences and conversation rather than abstract rules, so you develop an intuition for which case fits naturally instead of constantly second-guessing yourself.

Classroom German instruction often emphasizes grammar and reading over actual conversation, leaving students hesitant to speak. With a tutor, you get dedicated speaking practice in a low-pressure environment where mistakes are learning opportunities, not embarrassments. Tutors can tailor conversations to your interests and proficiency level, gradually building your confidence from basic exchanges to more complex discussions.

Yes—German pronunciation is more consistent than English, but non-native speakers often struggle with sounds like the German 'ü,' 'ö,' guttural 'r,' and the distinction between short and long vowels. A tutor can model correct pronunciation, identify your specific problem sounds, and give you targeted exercises to practice. Regular 1-on-1 feedback helps you adjust your mouth position and breathing in ways that group classes simply can't provide.

Memorizing word lists is ineffective—vocabulary sticks when you encounter words in meaningful contexts and use them repeatedly. A tutor teaches you vocabulary through conversations, reading passages, and real-world scenarios relevant to your interests, then strategically reuses those words across multiple sessions. This spaced repetition and contextual learning is far more effective than cramming isolated words.

Understanding German culture—from regional differences to social customs and communication styles—makes language learning more meaningful and helps you avoid cultural missteps in real conversations. A tutor can weave cultural insights into lessons, explaining why Germans value directness in communication, discussing regional dialects, and sharing authentic materials like German news, films, or literature that bring the language to life beyond textbook examples.

Beginner tutoring focuses on foundational grammar (cases, verb conjugation), essential vocabulary, and building basic conversational confidence. Advanced learners typically need help with nuanced grammar (subjunctive mood, passive voice), specialized vocabulary for their interests, and developing near-native fluency through discussion of complex topics. A tutor adjusts pacing, materials, and conversation depth to match your current level and goals.

Native German speakers speak quickly, use contractions and colloquialisms rarely found in textbooks, and regional accents vary significantly—making listening much harder than reading. A tutor exposes you to authentic audio at various speeds and accents, teaches you strategies for catching key words when you miss details, and provides real-time conversation practice so you develop the pattern recognition skills needed to understand natural speech.
