I am a professional educator and language enthusiast with a Ph.D. in History, an M.A. in Latin American Studies, and a B.A. in Spanish and International Relations. I have studied, lived, and worked in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Bolivia and Germany and bring my passion for history, language, and travel to my tutoring and teaching.As an instructor for the History and Spanish & Portuguese Departments at the University of Arizona, and as a freelance English teacher in Germany, I have taught students of all ages, backgrounds, and interests for over a decade. In the history classes I teach, I ask students to think about how global developments in politics, economics, and science have shaped the lives of individuals and societies throughout time. During my Undergraduate career I studied abroad for 5 months at the Albert-Ludwig Universität in Freiburg, Germany. While studying in Germany I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to live in an apartment style dorm with 5 German roommates. This gave me a first hand look at life in Germany as well as a better command of the German language.In my free time I enjoy reading books in German as well as watching German movies. Outside of German I like to golf, play pick up soccer with friends, bike, hike, and watch movies. I consider myself a movie buff and can answer most any movie trivia thrown my way.

Growing up, there were never any classes, specifically foreign language classes, that really intrigued me. I want to be able to give the opportunity to students I didn't have to learn different languages! I am a Hebrew teacher and tutor working with 5th and 6th graders. I am a student at American University studying German, Political Science, and Communications in French. I am approved to tutor these subjects: Conversational Italian, English, French 1, German 1, German 2, Hebrew, Italian, Languages, and Linguistics. I like to keep my students engaged and approach language learning through conversational acquisition. The best way to learn a foreign language is through immersion, unfortunately most of us cannot move to our target language's country, so the best option to maintain language proficiency is through conversation- it's also the best way to memorize vocabulary!

I have taught a wide range of subjects including chemistry, physical geography, human geography (and labs), marine geography, environmental science, Caribbean geography, globalization, political ecology, writing for the sciences, writing and research, and communication. I enjoy teaching a variety of subjects and like to discover ways to personalize lessons. My first focus is to build trust and communication with the student, and give them the skills to feel independent and sure of how to succeed in the desired subject area. I tend to apply alternative methods that encourage open communication, and interactive engagement (versus "top down" teaching strategies). I believe strongly in self-assessment and giving the student the ability not only to find their strengths, but also their weaknesses and give them the skills to overcome those challenges through attainable milestones. I have fostered and tutored three nieces into advanced programs and honor rolls in their schools through my method of engaging their skills with real world applications, and showing them how all of these skills are used in our society in various ways. This provides motivation and purpose and takes the subject from one of "a required knowledge" to one that they see as valuable and worth investing their time with. I love the outdoors and used to be a kitesurfing instructor as well.

I went to a small Quaker school in center city Philadelphia, where I learned to love learning, particularly math and science classes. I began tutoring my younger siblings in these subjects when they had trouble themselves. I even began attending Biology review sessions to help my teacher explain topics to other students and review material with them. I always enjoyed teaching simply because I enjoyed and was passionate about the material itself. But I enjoyed it even more when I heard about all the success other students were having as a result of my teaching.I was recruited to Brown University for rowing and am officially undeclared but plan on graduating with a dual degree in biology and German studies. My favorite subjects to tutor are the ones I'm most passionate about; namely biology, German, and math (algebra and trig).Outside of all that, I enjoy rowing, running, biking, watching films (in English and German), and playing guitar.
