Session Summaries by French Tutors

French Tutoring review by Gina in Melrose Park, IL
The student's class started a new unit this week, so we spent the majority of the session going over the new vocabulary by using exercises from his textbook. We did unit 10.A, exercises 1-3. They varied from simple matching of actions and body parts to listening. When we were going over these exercises, I circled some words on his vocab sheet that he seemed to have difficulty remembering. One strategy I gave him was to group the words contextually. I drew arrows to related words and would write in their corresponding nouns next to them. For example, I linked the verbs for "to brush one's hair," "to do one's hair" and "to comb one's hair" to the nouns "comb" and "brush." Next time, if he is having difficulty remembering this vocab, I may have him do an exercise where he makes a chart to group together these words. This was our first session since he started his unit, and he seemed to have a pretty good recollection of the vocabulary. During the listening activity, I had him read all the questions before we started. This way, he could prompt himself to listen for key words and phrases. He was able to answer all the questions after listening to the listening segment twice. If he gets into the habit of doing this on his own - reading the questions before the segment plays - then he will be able to successfully answer the questions and pick up on verbal cues. We also discussed other listening strategies, such as looking for verbs and negation in the sentence and not worrying about understanding every single word.

We reviewed demonstrative pronouns, indefinite pronouns, relative pronouns, and demonstrative adjectives. We completed some exercises and discussed sentence cues for when to use which pronoun/adjective. The second half of the lesson, we held dialogue in French and discussed methods for succeeding on her oral French exam.

French Tutoring review by Elaine in Melrose Park, IL
Another great session, as we reviewed for the student's final exam! We continued to go over the preparatory work she has been doing based on the teacher's study guide. Today, we focused on irregular verbs in all tenses, special -ir verbs, irregular future stems, use of pronouns with imperative, and formation of regular and irregular future and conditional. I gave the student a worksheet I had prepared on reflexive verb usage and we ended by her completing an old final exam I had prepared, which was based on her textbook. We reviewed the little mistakes she had made. The student is ready for her exam!
