During my time traveling throughout Asia, I worked and volunteered as a teacher for students of all ages, gaining significant experience in tutoring a wide variety of subjects. From ESL to public speaking, I have had the chance to help students make remarkable advancements in both confidence and competency levels. During my junior year of college, I studied in Shanghai through NYU Shanghai. I have also participated in the Middlebury College Chinese School twice at the highest level where I could only communicate in Chinese for eight weeks.I have Chinese tutoring experiences through another organization similar to Varsity Tutors as well as by meeting with students with whom I have personal connections. I have achieved near-native fluency in Mandarin Chinese, and have taught my tutees various skills that I have learned to learn the language effectively.Currently, I am studying to receive an English-teaching certificate at Columbia University while teaching English to Chinese immigrants in Chinatown using my Mandarin skills. Previously, I have held numerous positions in which I have used my Mandarin skills, including as a case manager at a community health center that serves Chinese immigrants in Flushing, Queens.Learning Chinese can seem extremely difficult and almost impossible at some times. As a learner of the language for 12 years, I know exactly how to overcome these obstacles which I will be able to teach you.

During my time in Binghamton University, I decided to get involved with the campus community and joined PUGS (Program for Undergraduate Guidance). I was paired up with underclassmen who were in the same major (Computer Science) or had similar career goals. This program aimed to be professional while creating a friendly relationship between the mentors and students. I provided answers and guidance to the students who shared my major or career goals. I also liked to help my fellow classmates whenever they had questions about their work or projects. I like to help out as much as possible because I enjoy helping others and I too receive experience.

I have a BA in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing with a minor in Chinese. I have worked with tutoring and mentoring for the last few years and I would like to continue to make an impact with tutoring. I was an Academic Mentor most recently. I combined many aspects of tutoring with mentoring. This gave me a grounded knowledge of tutoring and mentoring and I am fully confident in both aspects. I tutor English and Chinese. I am comfortable with almost all subjects in English, as this is what my degree is in. I am also comfortable with lower levels of Chinese and conversational Chinese. She told me, it was okay that I was behind on my reading and writing level, just that I tried my best and progressed. With that newly found confidence, I was able to pick up books that used to intimidate me. I was able to write small stories with pictures and be as imaginative as I wanted because I was going at my pace. That has stuck with me through my educational career. I love to learn new things.The Chinese language is also a passion of mine. I have studied Chinese going on three years now, and I will continue to learn the language as best to my ability. I would like to one day be a translator for fiction and poetry between Chinese and English. It???s important for culture and language to spread, and I would love to be part of an amazing exchange like that. My ultimate writing goal is to create a piece of work that is in English and Chinese and intermingles the American culture and Chinese culture.

Some of my favorite academic interests include memoirs and modern classics. I think Catcher in the Rye is still one of my all time favorite books but Percy Jackson, a modern classic, is up there too. Beyond academics, I take great guilty pleasure in watching TV shows such as Westworld, Sherlock, How I Met Your Mother, and even The Bachelorette when I'm at a low point.Beyond personal interests, tutoring has always been a side project of mine. Even since middle school, at a local elementary school, I would help tutor students in basic arithmetic and spelling. In high school, while the curriculum changed from multiplication tables to Calculus, the idea was still the same: help as many people reach their full potential as possible.
