Tutoring review by Jeremiah in Tijeras, NM
I assisted the student with his geometry homework in preparation for his test the next day. I went over his review sheet with him and reviewed the characteristics of parallelograms, squares, rhombuses and rectangles. We then moved on to another part of his review for which he was required to analyze shapes that looked like squares but might not have been depending on whether various combinations of angles and sides were congruent or parallel. Finally, I quizzed him to ensure he had interiorized the characteristics of special parallelograms.

I checked up with the student to see how they were preparing for the test at school, and it sounded like he was doing well with test prep in class. We went through more practice problems and there were still some more simple mistakes. However, I now believe that the reason for this is just a lack of experience. Since the AP exam tends to recycle questions, all he really needs is exposure to the problems. It sounds like a simple solution, but it can be tedious to accomplish because there's a big pool of questions that the exam makers choose from. There are 5 more weeks before the AP exam, and I would like to start seeing the student take at least one practice test per week from here on out. It would be especially beneficial if the practice tests were treated like a real one, but the primary goal is just to expose him to as many different problems as possible. He can even feel free to grade the tests himself. It might help reinforce the importance of double checking his work.

The student worked through his physics homework, which was a little bit difficult because the class started with energy concepts without learning the basic concepts of motion and acceleration. He just needs to make sure that he takes his time and writes out his steps clearly in the event that he needs to go back and catch mistakes. He also should make sure that he knows what the variables stand for, and what units each part of the equation takes to make sure he is solving for the right thing.

Tutoring review by Leslie in Tijeras, NM
We reviewed all of the topics from Chapter 1 in the student's textbook: operations with rational numbers (integers, fractions, and decimals), converting between fractions/decimals/percentages, order of operations, and geometry. It was a lot of material to go over in only 2 hours, but we managed the time well and had enough time to do at least one or two practice problems on each topic, clarify misconceptions, and learn tips for a few strategies. Overall, it was a productive lesson.
