Recent Pompano Beach Tutoring Session Notes
This session focused on review and webwork. During this session, we worked on problems related to sequences and series. This included the several tests for convergence, root test, ratio test, conditional convergence, absolute convergence, etc. We also went over series divergence, geometric series, telescoping series, the integral test for convergence and divergence of infinite series, and p-series comparison tests. Another topic was expressing a repeating decimal as a series. We hit on Power, MacLaurin, and Taylor series. We introduced partial differential equations. The student is doing well. I am looking forward to seeing him again.

Today we went through quizzes dealing with multiplying and dividing exponential equations. The student seemed to understand the material and we were able to finish two quizzes together. She will continue working on her own as well.

Today was our wrap-up session prior to the student's PSAT in 2 weeks. We spent the time working in Reading and Math, by reviewing approaches, and in Math, working through some difficult concepts. He understands that this year's PSAT and PLAN tests are very early practice. They will serve as good opportunities to establish some baseline expectations and identify areas to improve.

Student A and I read from his historical fiction novel that he was assigned in school. He was struggling with the WWII background information, so we discussed some of the major issues the main character was facing.
Student B and I worked on her Maniac Magee project. We read together and focused on identifying cycles in her notes.
Student C practiced writing the letters A through E. He is showing improvement in his penmanship. He read a story to me and practiced spelling simple words.

This session covered angle and line theorem review for the test and covered homework on parallel and perpendicular slopes. Both students seem proficient in basic algebra skills, although taking problems slower and more carefully would be wise. The proofs are the most troublesome which is to be expected. I provided sheets of all theorems and definitions that can be expected throughout the year and highlighted those to be focused on for the next test. The textbook is limited in its coverage of proofs so if they continue to be a stumbling block, I will source other information for practice and review.
