I received my B.S. in Mechanical Engineering this May at Pensacola Christian College. All through grade school and college I was able to help and tutor peers in math related classes. My all-time favorite subject would be algebra, although any sort of math excites me! I've learned to be very patient when helping others and love seeing students have that "light bulb moment" when the concept finally makes sense to them.... Teach study/organization skills, as well...

London 1st Grade Tutoring FAQ
The recent transition in academia toward an achievement-based system of evaluation, as well as its emphasis on the rapid development and mastery of skills, can impose unnecessary pressures on students during their early years of schooling. If your child is struggling to legibly write the alphabet on a piece of paper, master the conceptual basis of increasing and decreasing numerical values, phonetically sound out the words in a short story, or if he or she is simply frustrated with the goal-oriented and impersonal structure of the classroom environment, he or she may benefit from the one-on-one assistance of a private tutor.
First-grade tutoring is designed to enhance and supplement your child's academic skill set, while also fostering an appreciation and enjoyment for academia that can help propel him or her to higher learning. A skilled and experienced tutor can help devise ways to help your child learn to love learning. Teaching your child to love learning at an early age sets them up with a foundation that will serve them well in the future.
When you choose to pursue first-grade tutoring, Varsity Tutors will help you and your child connect with an instructor who best fits your child's disposition, as well as your preferences as a parent. When helping you get connected with a tutor, we take into account your particular academic goals for your child, as well as his or her extracurricular interests, personality, and learning habits. While it is obviously important that your child gets off to a good start academically, it is also a good idea to keep in mind that they are still a child. A talented and personable tutor can help make learning fun and engaging by creating games and activities that can help your child learn without even knowing that they are learning.
Tutors are talented communicators who are well versed in child development. Your child's tutor will effectively work with them to master the concepts addressed in first grade curricula while nurturing his or her fascination with the world of academia. The structured nature of classroom education can help students adjust to the expectations of the academic world, but it can also cause advanced students to become bored and creative students to lash out. The one-size-fits-all approach in education simply does not function well, especially for young students who need individualized attention to shape their personal outlooks and attitudes toward academia. First-grade tutoring allows your child to receive personal attention, helping to develop his or her appreciation for knowledge. It can be difficult to gauge exactly what your child's strengths and weaknesses are. A private tutor can help identify the areas where your child needs to improve and where they are already proficient. A private tutor can also help identify what your child's specific learning style is, which is knowledge that will be beneficial throughout their academic career.
Whether your child would prefer to study outside, at a local library, or in the comfort of their own home, a private tutor can meet you and your child there. Varsity Tutors' live learning platform also allows you and your child to meet a private tutor face-to-face online. This provides you and your child with a lot of flexibility because it lets you pick the time and place that works best for you and your child. Creating a positive experience during first grade is absolutely essential to shaping your child's desire to pursue future educational endeavors and their interests in higher education. First-grade tutoring allows your child to shape the skills that he or she will need in subsequent coursework, like the ability to write or perform simple addition, within a positive environment. If you are interested in more information about first-grade tutoring, contact Varsity Tutors educational directors to get more information about connecting with a private tutor.

Recent London 1st Grade Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I practiced reading and writing. She has a high level of comprehension. Her writing is good when she is focused and takes her time. I have her practice reading aloud. I also read aloud so I can stop and ask low and high level questions (Bloom's Taxonomy). She works very hard. We will practice time and money next week as requested by her mom.
Today we did a combination of reading & math. We completed two reading books and multiple pages of his math workbook. He has improved leaps and bounds in reading since we started!
Today did a game of concentration with yesterday's sight words and him was able to focus well for 20 minutes!! We then worked on the "F" letter writing page in his work book. He then did a really good job of being engaged with eye contact with me talking about his camp and Pokemon.
Today we worked on reading and identifying sight words. We also worked on recognizing time and counting by 5's using an analog clock. More than anything, we are building our rapport so that we can work well together during future sessions!
*Reviewed flash cards (sight words)
*Reviewed identifying and spelling colors
*Practiced writing first and last name--much improved!
*Practiced writing alphabet (upper/lower case)--still having trouble remembering alphabet in order and writing certain letters (J, Y, Z)
*Practiced sounding out and spelling words
*Read four books--much improved
*Assigned: continue reviewing flash cards
Worked on short and long /a/ and /e/ . Read a book on short vowel /e/. Practiced finding words within the story with the short vowel. Began to put together simple sentences and write them. Today's sentence, "We see the car."
