Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student worked out the paragraph and wrote up the rest of her essay. Assisted her in editing essay and pointed out where points needed to be expanded in more depth. Discussed conclusion. Assisted her in deciding on a topic and a first paragraph for her creative essay as well."
"The student and I worked on algebra concepts leading to tomorrow's assessment test. Equation of a line, translating two points into equation of a line, fraction skills, similarity, Pythagorean theorem, slope, simplification of square roots, and English measure."
"The student and I worked on Math today. It was our last session which helped me make sure she took care of all of her Math homework and knew how to do it. She is very bright and has really learned a lot. She finally fully understands perimeters which makes me proud. In return I showed her how to draw cubes in 3D for her assignments. Her confidence level has increased rapidly and I hope she will now be able to approach math in a more positive manner!!"
"The student and I focused on geometry today, converting word problems to diagrams. She did very well! I was impressed by her ability to recall characteristics of different geometric shapes and identify how several different shapes relate to each other."
"The student and I started the session by going over the critical reading sections she had completed over the week. We then went over the math section--we talked about the 4 different areas that appear on the test (numbers, algebra, geometry, and probability), looked through the book's math review, and then started completing actual test sections. Although the math questions are generally solved through straightforward math, we talked about you could pick numbers if the answers are variables, and how you could "back solve", which means that you plug in answer choices to see what works."
"The student and I finished working on her Pre-Calc test review over geometric/arithmetic series and sequences. She only had a few questions and worked relatively independently. She did really well on her two quizzes that covered the material earlier this week. Overall, she seemed very prepared for her test."
"In my second session with the student we read her sample essay that she wrote from our outline, and edited it. After going through it, her homework is to re-write it for me with all of our edits (that we discussed a lot so that she knew why we changed them) as well as write another sample essay (and save her outlining/pre-writing for us to look at as well). Then we went through a few of the multiple choice questions from a Writing practice exam."
"We went through verb conjugations and overall test review for her upcoming test. We did exercises from her review sheet and went over vocabulary. She made progress understanding how you use reflexive nouns in Spanish and how to construct different verb tenses."
"The student has a test on chapter 4 of her text book on Tuesday. Today we reviewed all the new sections and solved sample problems on matrices, determinants, multiplicative/additive inverses, solving system of equations and Cramer's method."
"Tonight we continued practice for the verbal reasoning section. We completed the verbal portion of a practice test using the test taking strategies we went over. We also continued to build the student's vocabulary using flashcards."
"Student 1 - We did his spelling homework which required him to write spelling words into declarative, interrogative and exclamatory sentences. He showed a good understanding of his spelling words and did a much better job today than in the past with grammar. After this, he and I studied long vowel patterns. Student 2 - Today we worked on long division with partial quotients."
"We started with the books today and started working on sight words. The student did pretty well with the sounds in the first kindergarten book of sight words plus she will be starting to learn them at school. The dual education with these will no doubt help the student get better at sounding out words. She actually did quite well today. We then wrote the sight words to have her get used to reading and writing familiar words. The student's writing skills are good."
