ACT English Tutor • +23 Subjects

I am a recent graduate of Tulane University. I received a B.A. in English (with a concentration in creative writing) as well as a B.A. in political science. I have extensive experience working as a tutor for a wide range of ages. I currently tutor international students ages 4-16 in English. For two years, I taught elementary school students who struggled with literacy in developing their reading abilities. I have participated in countless writing workshops and aided my peers in editing/proofreading sessions throughout my academic career. I understand how difficult English can be for students and that's why I bring both positivity and patience to my lessons. My goal is to help those I tutor grow as readers and writers!

As a current junior in college, I personally know what the journey through elementary, middle, and high school looks like. Often, as students go through these years of their lives, they are dealing with a host of school-related challenges not only limited to academics, but also to peer-related obstacles and personal, emotional, and identity issues. As a tutor for young students such as these, I am responsible for helping them focus on their academic goals while also guiding them to question and view critically these challenges with which they are faced. I firmly believe that my role as an English and writing tutor goes beyond simply introducing effective strategies and techniques for scoring well on a test; my primary aim is to get students thinking critically by asking them questions and allowing them to expand their perspectives on a wide range of real world topics. Over the course of this somewhat gradual process, it is my hope that they will be able to view writing and the English language as a beautiful and complex expression of thought -- more than as just a bland, required essay that has them thinking in binaries. As an avid reader and writer myself, I feel I am qualified to assist students from the basics of English language structure to the intricacies of crafting a well-written essay or paper. Throughout my high school and college career, I have helped many of my peers with their writing assignments by proofreading their work, suggesting changes for improvement in content and style, and having conversations with them to better understand what message they are attempting to convey. Doing so in a relatively informal setting has enabled me to see each of my students not as just another face in the crowd, but instead, as someone with whom I connect and personally want to help improve.Further, my experience as an English major and Creative Writing minor at Stony Brook University has attuned me to the most important aspects of reading and writing in my everyday life, whether I am reading a novel for class or for pleasure, drafting a lengthy paper, or scrawling out a poem on a piece of scrap paper. Making reading and writing a personal passion and a primary part of my life allows me to recognize the beauty in teaching it to others, which I believe, in turn, will help students recognize the beauty in learning it as well.

I am a senior at MIT majoring in Writing with a specialization in Digital Media. I have also completed a minor in Business Management. As one of ten writing majors at a school full of people pursuing science and technology rather than humanities subjects, I have taken a default position as tutor for anyone struggling with any writing assignments. I have helped fellow college students on a wide variety assignments ranging from analytic papers on race in the media, to papers on scientific theories, to scholarship essays. In high school I was a Link Crew tutor for three years, making myself available for tutoring sessions after school for whatever subject students required help in.But enough about my qualifications. If you are looking for a tutor, you probably want someone who will not only help you meet and exceed your own goals, but also someone you can connect and get along well with. So here are some fun facts about me:-Before college I traveled around Europe with two friends and we visited every art gallery we could find-I am in the process of writing a full-length screenplay for my thesis in writing-I love tea, cats, crime novels, and gluten free pizza-I am a fan of Harry Potter, Doctor Who, and Breaking Bad-I have met Brendon Urie from Panic! at the Disco

CPE - Certificate of Proficiency in English Tutor • +9 Subjects

I am a graduate of Lee College in Texas. I received my Bachelor's degree in Business administration and certification in project management. During my time of studies, I participated in many extracurricular activities such as coaching, teaching, and volunteering for charitable organizations. I've traveled to many countries around the world studying and immersing myself within the cultures. In fact, during my time abroad I learned Italian while living in Italy and improved my level of Spanish while living in Spain. I believe that the keys and foundations to learning any language are trying and making mistakes, along with consistency until reaching the level of proficiency. I have a strong passion for teaching, and learning because knowledge is the foundation of success! A classroom should be fun, comfortable, and inviting in other words I tend to tailor all my classes to my students' needs. Outside of teaching, I enjoy spending my time in nature hiking, doing or instructing yoga classes, or playing sports.
