As a current Masters student in English at Boston College, I firmly believe that learning to think, write, and speak critically is of the utmost importance. So important, in fact, that I take great pleasure in working with students who are having a difficult time with English coursework, no matter the age (Middle school, high school, undergrad). I believe that hard work and enthusiasm are the most important tools to success. Along with a variety of techniques I have to help with grammar, vocabulary, outlining, and argumentation, I try and stress the need for hard work and enthusiasm in all of my sessions. Hello! My name is Dana and I'm a post-bac student at Goucher college. I recently graduated from Northeastern University with a Bachelors of Science in computer science and mathematics. I have tutored mathematics and SAT math preparation for multiple years and have participated in peer-tutoring at Northeastern. I love solving problems, being outdoors, and dancing!

I graduated from Northwestern University in 2021, where I majored in sociology, was pre-med, and completed an honors thesis. I really love classes that helped me understand the world around me in new and exciting ways- so organic chemistry and physics were among my favorite courses. In sociology I was very focused on research, specifically related to health inequities. I tutor in physics, chemistry, biology, and social sciences and am excited to work with you! Helping peers and receiving help from peers for studying difficult content was such an integral part of my college experience- and sometimes the most fun part- and that's why I decided to work as a tutor between undergrad and med school. My main focus in tutoring is creating examples, analogies, and practice problems to help you understand your class content or study material in the most accessible way possible. I am also happy to help with building study strategies and tools around the specific material you're working on. I will always ask you what your goals are for tutoring and make sure to center our time together around these priorities.

I received my Bachelor of Arts in English and Spanish from Howard University and worked as an educator and as a communications administrator for several years post college. During my career as a communications administrator, I enrolled at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in pursuance of my Fashion Design Certificate. My education from MassArt inspired me to become a wardrobe consultant and to found A Balanced Wardrobe LLC. Though I've transitioned from academia to business and fashion, I still rely heavily on my reading and writing skills. These skills transcend all professions, as they are fundamental to our ability to learn and to communicate effectively on paper and in-person. During my years in education, I engaged with many students who struggled in reading and writing, and typically, these same students struggled in other subjects; in math they struggled to read word problems and in science they struggled to write their lab results. Working with these students gave me first-hand experience at how to help students strengthen their comprehension without hurting their confidence. Over time, I found that patience, consistent positive reinforcement and persistent redirection are key, and it is these same techniques that I utilize with my Varsity Tutors students. Without reading and writing skills, I would have never been able to traverse so many different fields and discover my passion, and through tutoring, I hope to help my students achieve the same.
