I am from Montana originally and grew up on my parents farm/ranch that they still own and operate. I graduated from Montana State University with a BA in Philosophy with a religious studies option. I love learning about the world and helping others to do the same. However, my first love was science and math. I tutored college statistics and freshman chemistry for two years at MSU. I want to continue to tutor math and science at the primary and secondary level alongside philosophy. My personal philosophy on education is that we are all both students and teachers and we all continually learn from and teach one another. Teachers and tutors act to facilitate new discoveries, and the best teachers strive to develop a personal learning strategy for each student so they may succeed themselves.I've served two AmeriCorps service terms after college and recently moved to Portland May 2014 to seek new opportunities. I'm dedicated to helping others and look forward to getting to know my students.

I am a Health Sciences and Biology double major at Northeastern University, graduating in just one year. I have worked in part-time biology research lab for three years, as well as full-time in a hospital in Boston for over a year now, in both clinical and research settings. My tutoring experience started a few years ago when I taught a nutrition class to children in their early teens, teaching them the basics of nutrition, such as picking healthy ingredients and avoiding processed foods. Since then, I have been a part-time tutor, and I look forward to meeting lots of new students through Varsity Tutors! As a current college student, I have taken many of the classes I tutor very recently, and am still actively involved in learning, especially in science classes. When I am tutoring for a course, I like to teach the students the way I would have liked to be taught, and I try to teach things that help them remember the material more easily, and connect the dots to understand the big picture.

Tutoring represents the opportunity to work closely with a student in particular subjects I am passionate about. As a chemical engineering student at Vanderbilt University, I have always been passionate about learning math and science. I have also particularly excelled in these fields, perhaps due to my passion, and I managed to score a 790 on the math SAT and SAT II. I also took 5 AP Exams as a high school student, receiving 5s in Calculus BS, statistics, computer science, biology, and chemistry. At my university, I received an honors scholarship for my academic performance in engineering, and I currently aspire to continue my education at a higher level. As a tutor, I will motivate students, set clear goals, and help students progress towards a higher level of understanding.

I am a retired orthopedic surgeon who had been in clinical practice for close to 40 years before retiring. I did my undergraduate training at the University of Southern California (go Trojans) graduating with a BS in Biology. I attended the Georgetown University School of Medicine and went on to specialty training in Orthopedic Surgery at UC San Francisco finishing up with the United States Army Medical Corp with the rank of Major. I have been practicing orthopedic surgery since then until retirement. In surgery, there has always been the saying "see one, do one, TEACH one. Education has always been important in my family; and all four of my kids are graduates of the UC system. They all experienced the trials and tribulations of SATs, National Merit, AP courses, etc. In my spare time I have built lifted off-road four wheel drive vehicles, every desktop computer we have owned from components, have mastered unusual computer programs such as AutoCad, and have welded together a utility trailer that even passed California inspection. I plan to learn a musical instrument. The big advantage I would have in the subject matter of human anatomy, biology and physiology is the fact that there is no closer proximity to the subject matter than having actually working on the anatomy when the anatomy is still alive.

I graduated with a business degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in Manhattan. I spent 3 years of my time at FIT tutoring writing and English to students and faculty (mostly on curriculum). With students, I focused heavily on college essay writing, admissions essays, resume and cover letter building and improvement, scholarship applications, and personal writing. All of the students I helped with college admissions essays and scholarship essays have gained entry into their desired programs, and/or have received the scholarships for which they applied! The skill level of my students ranged from rudimentary to scholarly - I am happy to work with any student, no matter their level!I even studied abroad in Hong Kong for a semester and was part of the English Club on my campus. That was a great experience! When I graduated from FIT, I spent some time tutoring high school English and writing, as well as test prep at tutoring/mentoring start-up in NYC. It was interesting to take my college tutoring skill-set and begin to teach high school students.I have additional experience as a professional writing consultant, for individuals who aren't looking for academic help. I am also an editor of an online magazine, where I help guide and oversee staff writers' contributions and post articles myself from time-to-time!I'm excited to work with students on this platform and help them take their English writing and grammar from good to great! I'm also excited to make deep connections with the amazing students that come here to learn!

I have six years of experience in biology, math, chemistry and several other biological courses. I graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from Ohio University and obtained my master of science degree in physiology from Case Western Reserve University. I am devoted to continuing to master biology and sharing my knowledge to bridge the gap for others that find it harder to grasp. I am patient and have a unique teaching method. In addition, I am a visual learner and translate this into my teaching pedagogy. I use drawings, diagrams, flashcards, practice exams and quizzes to communicate new knowledge to students. I am a great listener and my sole concern is to understand a student's learning gap and find tangible ways to bridge it. Outside of academia, I am a biochemist for a local pharmaceutical company that synthesize various drugs that are currently in clinical trials. I am very friendly and outgoing. I enjoy indoor rock climbing, eating sushi and shopping.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most Bar Exam candidates find the Multistate Performance Test (MPT) and Multistate Essay Examination (MEE) particularly challenging because they require synthesizing multiple legal concepts under time pressure. Additionally, students often struggle with the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) subjects that involve nuanced distinctions—like distinguishing between different contract formation rules, criminal law defenses, or civil procedure requirements. Evidence and Professional Responsibility are also common pain points because they involve memorizing detailed rules with fact-specific applications. Personalized tutoring helps by targeting your specific weak areas rather than generic review of all subjects.
The MEE requires a more formulaic structure than law school essays—examiners expect clear issue spotting, rule statements with precision, and concise application to the facts provided. Unlike law school, there's less room for nuanced policy arguments; instead, you need to demonstrate mastery of black-letter law under tight time constraints (30 minutes per essay). A Bar Exam tutor can help you develop a consistent essay template, practice rapid issue identification, and learn to allocate time effectively across multiple topics in a single exam. Many students benefit from drilling past MEE questions to internalize the expected depth and breadth of analysis.
The MBE rewards pattern recognition and understanding why incorrect answers are wrong, not just why correct answers are right. High performers typically practice hundreds of questions in subject clusters (all contracts questions together, all torts together) to identify recurring rule applications and common traps. Spaced repetition and retrieval practice—revisiting questions you've missed weeks later—significantly improves retention. A tutor experienced with the MBE can help you analyze your question performance by subject and question type, identify whether you're missing rules or misapplying them, and develop targeted study strategies rather than generic review.
The MPT is fundamentally different because it's a closed-universe test—all the law you need is provided in the materials, and you're evaluated on how well you use those materials to solve a practical problem (drafting a memo, contract, demand letter, etc.). Unlike law school writing, you won't be penalized for not knowing external law; instead, examiners assess your ability to read complex documents quickly, extract relevant information, and apply it to the task. The time pressure (90 minutes per MPT) means efficiency matters more than eloquence. Tutors who specialize in the MPT help you develop systems for organizing materials, spotting controlling vs. illustrative authority, and structuring responses that directly address the instructions.
The best Bar Exam tutors have recent bar passage experience (ideally within the last 5 years), deep familiarity with your specific bar exam format (UBE, state-specific, etc.), and a track record helping students improve scores. Look for tutors who understand the distinctions between MBE, MEE, and MPT strategy—these require different skill sets—and who can diagnose whether your struggles stem from rule gaps, application errors, or time management. Ideally, your tutor should have scored well on the bar themselves and understand the psychology of test preparation. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who meet these standards and can tailor instruction to your learning style and timeline.
Most bar candidates benefit from 8-12 weeks of focused preparation, though the intensity varies based on your baseline knowledge and target score. Many law school graduates begin light review during their final semester of law school, then ramp up to 30-40 hours per week after graduation. The ideal timeline involves an initial survey phase (reviewing all subjects), a deep-dive phase (targeted practice on weak areas), and a final integration phase (full-length practice exams and timed drills). A tutor can help you create a personalized timeline based on your starting point, identify which subjects need more attention, and adjust your plan if you're not hitting target scores on practice exams.
Measurable progress typically shows up within 2-3 weeks of focused tutoring: improved accuracy on practice MBE questions (tracking percentage correct by subject), faster essay completion times with more complete rule statements, and better organization of MPT responses. Most students see a 5-10 point improvement in their MBE scaled score after addressing specific knowledge gaps, and essay scores improve when you internalize the expected format and depth. Full-length practice exam scores are the best predictor of actual bar passage—a tutor can help you analyze these results to identify whether you're ready or need additional focus in specific areas. Success ultimately means passing the bar on your first attempt, which personalized instruction significantly supports.
Yes—UBE jurisdictions (which use the Multistate Bar Examination, MEE, and MPT) have standardized content and scoring, making tutoring strategies more uniform. However, many states add state-specific essays or a state-specific multiple-choice component that requires knowledge of local rules, procedures, and case law. A tutor familiar with your specific jurisdiction can help you master state-specific requirements without diluting your preparation for uniform subjects. If you're taking a state-specific exam, ensure your tutor has experience with that jurisdiction's unique format and can allocate study time appropriately between uniform and state-specific content.
