I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Georgia Southern University and a Master of Science in Chemistry from Georgia State University. I have experience tutoring a wide range of subjects including middle school math, ACT and SAT test preparation, biology, chemistry, and high school math, but I especially enjoy tutoring in chemistry and biology subjects since I struggled and disliked them when I was in middle and high school but learned to enjoy them while getting my degrees. I enjoy showing students real-world scenarios or extended analogies when tutoring to give students a different perspective of the material.

I am a graduate of Pomona College, where I received my B.A. in Linguistics. I love languages and grammar, and I enjoy helping others figure out the puzzles of how English and other languages work. I was a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Turkey, where I taught English to university students. I have experience with students of all ages as a tutor at Upward Bound and local community organizations. I have also worked as an American Literature teacher at Breakthrough Twin Cities, where my favorite part of the job was seeing my students excited about what they were reading. I tutor a wide range of subjects, but I especially enjoy tutoring language and reading. I believe that with the right support, students can improve and succeed in any area. In my free time, I like to bake, ride my bike, and play the ukulele.

What I love most about teaching and tutoring are the students I get to meet and push towards excellence. At the heart of every tutor/student interaction is the relationship built between the tutor and student. Learning requires both trust and understanding. With this as the bedrock, a successful academic relationship occurs organically between educator and student. Every person is unique and different - learning how to use one's unique set of skills to conquer any subject is the centerpiece of my teaching philosophy. As the saying goes, "A student does not care how much you know, until they know how much you care."I have learned the above lessons in my time working as a tutor and teacher at a charter high school in Newark, New Jersey. In this role I specifically tutored three sections of math: pre-algebra, algebra 1, and geometry. I also wrote and tutored the AP Language and Composition materials for the school's 11th grade, and teacher assisted the AP United States History class. Later in the year I became a full time teacher for 10th grade AP World History, where I received a teacher certification in the state of New Jersey that is currently being transferred to Connecticut.Tutoring and teaching these subjects confirmed a love of learning that I have always had. My students and I, several of whom were several grades behind, worked tirelessly to achieve grade level with much success. We worked hard and pushed each other to achieve. I hope to continue this effort moving forward.Someone once told me, "the greatest hockey player does not always make the greatest coach." Admittedly, math was never my strongest subject growing up. However, it is this very trait that also makes me an outstanding math tutor. In order for me to understand what I am teaching, I need to go the extra mile to answer the tough how and why questions. I need to break down every problem and at each step question what I am doing. As a result, I have a great appreciation for math because it requires endurance and hard work, but gives the best feeling once mastered.Aside from being a certified secondary school social studies teacher, I have the benefit of a unique college education. Both my bachelor's degrees were interdisciplinary and allowed me to take classes across the social sciences and humanities: anthropology, history, English, political science, sociology, philosophy, economics, geography, etc. I did not learn strictly history. Rather, I learned how to question history and how to apply all the facts and dates to the real world. Social studies is about who we are as human beings and why human actions occur. It is the study of us, and once we recognize the power in that reflection, history quickly becomes everyone's favorite subject!

Hi! I'm Marie, a full-time teacher and artist. I have taught classroom Art, English & Computer Science as a certified educator in US schools for about 10 years from ages pre-school through high school, as well as tutoring in single and group lessons for Art, ESL, SPED and gifted students. I have also designed and taught in a number of summer camps. In 2017, I was awarded Teacher of the Year honors at my school. I have a BA in Art Education, and have continued professional certification experience through outside professional training programs, conferences and seminars.n my spare time I enjoy nature, games, and playing with my dogs. I have transitioned to full-time, online private teaching as I believe it allows teachers to develop curriculum which better meets the needs of today's students by directly engaging with students more thoroughly. The individual and small group settings allow teachers to cater lessons to students needs and goals intuitively. Private teaching online has also allowed me more time and flexibility to spend with my family. I truly believe online learning is a critical part of the future of education, and I'm excited to share some class time with you!

Frequently Asked Questions
Bar Exam success requires mastering multiple subjects simultaneously while developing test-taking strategies—a challenge many students underestimate. Common struggles include managing the sheer volume of material across seven subjects (Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law, Evidence, Real Property, and Torts), distinguishing between state-specific rules and uniform principles, and applying knowledge under time pressure. Additionally, many students struggle with essay writing under exam conditions and with identifying relevant issues quickly across fact patterns. Personalized tutoring addresses these specific pain points by helping you focus on your weakest areas rather than reviewing material you've already mastered.
Bar prep courses provide comprehensive subject review and practice, but they deliver the same curriculum to thousands of students simultaneously. Personalized tutoring allows a tutor to adapt instruction to your learning style, focus on the specific subjects or essay types where you're struggling most, and adjust pacing based on your progress. For example, if you're strong in Contracts but weak in Evidence, a tutor can spend less time on foundational Contracts concepts and more time on Evidence strategies, rule application, and practice problems. This targeted approach helps you maximize your study time and identify gaps before test day.
Effective Bar Exam tutors combine deep subject matter expertise with test preparation strategy. Look for tutors who have passed the Bar themselves, understand the specific exam format you're taking (uniform bar exam, MBE, essays, or your state's unique requirements), and have experience identifying which rules and applications are tested most frequently. Strong tutors ask diagnostic questions early on to assess your knowledge gaps, teach issue-spotting and rule-application frameworks, and provide extensive feedback on your essay writing and multiple-choice reasoning. They should also be familiar with your state's specific rules if you're taking a state-specific exam component, and they should help you develop a realistic study schedule.
Most students begin tutoring 2-4 months before their Bar Exam date, though this varies based on your baseline knowledge and exam performance history. A typical tutoring schedule is 2-3 sessions per week, with each session focused on a specific subject or skill (essay writing, MBE strategy, specific rule mastery). Students who struggled with the Bar before often benefit from more frequent sessions early on, then taper frequency as they gain confidence. The total number of hours varies widely—some students need 20-30 hours of tutoring, while others benefit from 50+ hours. A tutor can help you develop a personalized timeline based on a diagnostic assessment of your knowledge and your target exam date.
Clear progress markers include improved performance on practice MBE questions (tracking your percentage correct by subject), stronger essay scores with better issue-spotting and rule application, faster issue identification on timed practice tests, and increased confidence explaining complex legal concepts. If you retook the Bar before, you should see significant improvement in your weakest subjects. Many students report completing Bar prep materials more efficiently with tutoring support, finishing with time for additional practice. Your ultimate measure of success is passing the Bar on your target date—tutors help you identify which preparation strategies work best for you and ensure you're spending time efficiently.
Yes—in fact, tutors are especially valuable after a failed attempt. Tutors can analyze your previous exam performance (if available), identify which subject areas or question types caused the most difficulty, and determine whether your struggle was knowledge-based, strategy-based, or anxiety-related. They help you avoid repeating the same study mistakes and focus intensively on the content or skills that didn't click the first time. Many students who failed find that personalized instruction targets their specific gaps more effectively than a second full bar prep course. A tutor can also help rebuild your confidence and develop coping strategies for test-day anxiety if that was a factor.
Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who specialize in Bar Exam preparation. Start by describing your situation—your target exam date, which Bar you're taking, your current study status, and any specific subjects where you need help. This helps match you with a tutor whose experience aligns with your needs. Once matched, your tutor will likely begin with a diagnostic assessment to understand your strengths and gaps, then work with you to create a structured study plan. You can meet with your tutor as frequently as your schedule and budget allow, adjusting frequency as needed throughout your prep period.
