"Never do for a student what they can do for themselves." Through my own education and experience guiding others in their learning process, I have come to firmly believe that true education occurs when a person is pushed and supported to do for themselves what they did not know they could do. I have now tutored and taught in a variety of settings for three years; each experience has pushed me to be an educator who guides others to answers rather than providing the answers. In 2013, I earned my Master of Arts in Teaching from University of Portland; prior to that experience, I earned my Bachelor of Arts in English at Portland State University in 2011.I first began working with students by tutoring math for an after school homework club at a local elementary school. This experience led me to begin substituting as an educational aide throughout the Hillsboro School District; I worked in a variety of K-12 special education settings facilitating reading curriculum and serving as a one-to-one guide for students in general education classrooms. Sharing the educational process with these students, I found a passion that would lead me to pursue my master's degree.Since entering the classroom as a teacher, I have primarily taught English Language Arts at the middle and high school levels. I student-taught in the Portland area during my certification process before taking a job teaching middle school students in Glendale, Arizona. I currently teach in Vancouver at a STEM magnet program; I guide students in their exploration of English Language Arts at the middle school level while offering a psychology/sociology elective for high school students. I also currently serve as librarian part-time.First and foremost, I love sharing reading and writing with students. I enjoy everything from assisting students with basic reading comprehension strategies to helping students draft complex research essays. I enjoy guiding students through literature ranging from Chaucer to more modern classics. Reading is a lens for seeing the world; alternatively, writing is a lens through which the world may see the author. I first fell in love with these subjects for those reasons. I also enjoy tutoring social studies and basic math through middle school as well.On my own time, I explore a wide range of hobbies: hiking & backpacking, cooking, writing, reading, and bicycling to name a few. More than anything, I think it essential to stay curious. I encourage my students to stay curious by modeling a life of curiosity.I am based out of the North Portland area and can happily meet you in a public space or your own residence.Best of luck in your search for the right tutor to guide your student. I hope that I could be the right fit for your student's learning needs and interests.

A tech nerd who enjoys teaching in my spare time. Completing my fifth degree (third master's) at Columbia while working full-time on managing a learning platform. Teaching and helping people learn is my passion, especially in Mathematics. Mathematics is a language; I would like to teach you how to speak it. If you are interested in learning about strategies for standardized testing, let's connect. Standard testing is about developing a new skill and mindset (I know, my GRE verbal score was in the 99 percentile and I used to teach at Kaplan). Learning should be fun, so I hope that our sessions are light-hearted, insightful, and comfortable for you.

I am currently a business student at the University of Houston Honors College. I actually enjoy working out math problems (especially Trigonometry and Calculus) as it gives me a sense of accomplishment like solving a puzzle. I would also say that I have a great sense of humor and a positive personality. My goal in tutoring is to present the material in a creative way that engages the student. In my opinion, when it comes to mathematics, a student's biggest enemy is low self confidence. Once a student finds that he or she has the ability to solve a problem, they are much more receptive to the subject and can retain more information.

My background is in Athletic Training. I have a bachelors degree and a masters degree in AT. My love of sports and for the human body has led me down this path. I am a current college professor teaching a wide variety of courses in health, anatomy and physiology, and exercise science. I have recently gone on to continue my education and just completed my doctoral degree in kinesiology. I teach college students primarily but do have experience teaching middle school age students through an anatomy camp each summer. I also have 3 children in elementary school in which I am probably overly involved in their learning. As far as my teaching style goes, I love to present information in multiple ways. I often look for youtube videos on content that students don't understand, and use them instead of trying to reinvent the wheel. I also like to use images, both labeled and unlabeled. Often times it takes hearing something more than once for it to be remembered and my goal is to provide repetition but in a way that it not so repetitive. I also encourage my students to teach me. If you can act like the teacher than you know the content. When I'm not teaching, I enjoy traveling around and showing my kids different historic sites and National Parks. I think one can learn a lot when traveling and it is one way I like to teach my own children about our world, culture, country, and even math. I'm a former soccer player turned soccer mom now, but I love all sports. Because I teach anatomy, health, and exercise science, many of my students are athletes so I am able to use sports to teach concepts. We can learn from the world around us, we just need a little encouragement to get started.

I am a recent graduate of Columbia University School of Engineering and Applied Science, where I completed a Bachelor of Science in Earth and Environmental Engineering. During my time at Columbia, and also in high school, I worked with fellow students as a tutor for various subjects with a math and science background. Most recently I have helped students in the areas of Environmental Science, Algebra, and Chemistry. I have always enjoyed helping young students master the fundamental concepts of arithmetic through pre-calculus by emphasizing real-world applications behind the numbers and equations. I focus on helping students develop problem solving skills that can not only be applied to a specific test or homework assignment, but also to any future assignments that build on that material.I currently work as an Ocean Engineer in the New York area, and enjoy the opportunity to spend time working on the ocean. I also spend as much time as I can cycling in the summers and skiing in the winters.

I see a certain magic in helping someone understand something about the world, and I want to experience that magic over and over again. I have had experience working with students at many levels of education, from elementary school through students working on graduate degrees. I have a bachelor's in chemistry from Reed College and a Ph.D. in radiochemistry from the University of Missouri, where I also took a minor in college teaching. I currently tutor elementary, middle school, and high school math and science subjects. Chemistry is my first love, and I enjoy tutoring chemistry and biology because explanations in these fields involve telling a good story about why weirdly different things are actually the same thing. My teaching philosophy is founded on being a good listener: I cannot help you learn something new unless you can tell me what you already know, so I am ready to listen to you. Outside of academia, I'm into woodworking, other arts and crafts, exploring my city, and gardening. I have two children who do a good job of showing me the world through their fresh eyes.

Welcome potential clients! I am a 19 year old student taking a year off from college to explore opportunities in the intersection between art and cognitive studies. I am currently residing in Los Angeles, but traveled from Charlottesville, Virginia where I was studying Cognitive Science and Studio Art at University of Virginia. I am patient, flexible, and love working with students in different subjects, but especially math. I prefer to cater the way I teach a student based on how they learn, whether it be by visuals, repetition, etc. I create methods that are out of the box if a student struggles with the way she/he are learning in school since school tends to teach in a uniform method rather than on an individualized basis.

I am able to offer a great blend of strong academic background in the sciences with extensive knowledge and experience of teaching language. During my university career, I was focused on pre-medical courses and MCAT test preparation which makes me an excellent coach in learning the sciences. After university, I moved to Peru for seven months and taught English at a language school which has given me invaluable opportunities to practice coaching language acquisition. I am also a very personable guy who always develops excellent rapport with students.

Frequently Asked Questions
Bar Exam success requires mastering multiple subjects simultaneously while developing test-taking strategies—a challenge many students underestimate. Common struggles include managing the sheer volume of material across seven subjects (Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law, Evidence, Real Property, and Torts), distinguishing between state-specific rules and uniform principles, and applying knowledge under time pressure. Additionally, many students struggle with essay writing under exam conditions and with identifying relevant issues quickly across fact patterns. Personalized tutoring addresses these specific pain points by helping you focus on your weakest areas rather than reviewing material you've already mastered.
Bar prep courses provide comprehensive subject review and practice, but they deliver the same curriculum to thousands of students simultaneously. Personalized tutoring allows a tutor to adapt instruction to your learning style, focus on the specific subjects or essay types where you're struggling most, and adjust pacing based on your progress. For example, if you're strong in Contracts but weak in Evidence, a tutor can spend less time on foundational Contracts concepts and more time on Evidence strategies, rule application, and practice problems. This targeted approach helps you maximize your study time and identify gaps before test day.
Effective Bar Exam tutors combine deep subject matter expertise with test preparation strategy. Look for tutors who have passed the Bar themselves, understand the specific exam format you're taking (uniform bar exam, MBE, essays, or your state's unique requirements), and have experience identifying which rules and applications are tested most frequently. Strong tutors ask diagnostic questions early on to assess your knowledge gaps, teach issue-spotting and rule-application frameworks, and provide extensive feedback on your essay writing and multiple-choice reasoning. They should also be familiar with your state's specific rules if you're taking a state-specific exam component, and they should help you develop a realistic study schedule.
Most students begin tutoring 2-4 months before their Bar Exam date, though this varies based on your baseline knowledge and exam performance history. A typical tutoring schedule is 2-3 sessions per week, with each session focused on a specific subject or skill (essay writing, MBE strategy, specific rule mastery). Students who struggled with the Bar before often benefit from more frequent sessions early on, then taper frequency as they gain confidence. The total number of hours varies widely—some students need 20-30 hours of tutoring, while others benefit from 50+ hours. A tutor can help you develop a personalized timeline based on a diagnostic assessment of your knowledge and your target exam date.
Clear progress markers include improved performance on practice MBE questions (tracking your percentage correct by subject), stronger essay scores with better issue-spotting and rule application, faster issue identification on timed practice tests, and increased confidence explaining complex legal concepts. If you retook the Bar before, you should see significant improvement in your weakest subjects. Many students report completing Bar prep materials more efficiently with tutoring support, finishing with time for additional practice. Your ultimate measure of success is passing the Bar on your target date—tutors help you identify which preparation strategies work best for you and ensure you're spending time efficiently.
Yes—in fact, tutors are especially valuable after a failed attempt. Tutors can analyze your previous exam performance (if available), identify which subject areas or question types caused the most difficulty, and determine whether your struggle was knowledge-based, strategy-based, or anxiety-related. They help you avoid repeating the same study mistakes and focus intensively on the content or skills that didn't click the first time. Many students who failed find that personalized instruction targets their specific gaps more effectively than a second full bar prep course. A tutor can also help rebuild your confidence and develop coping strategies for test-day anxiety if that was a factor.
Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who specialize in Bar Exam preparation. Start by describing your situation—your target exam date, which Bar you're taking, your current study status, and any specific subjects where you need help. This helps match you with a tutor whose experience aligns with your needs. Once matched, your tutor will likely begin with a diagnostic assessment to understand your strengths and gaps, then work with you to create a structured study plan. You can meet with your tutor as frequently as your schedule and budget allow, adjusting frequency as needed throughout your prep period.
