AP Comparative Government and Politics Tutor • +26 Subjects

Growing up in a family of Sicilian and Irish immigrants, I loved any opportunity to hear about a family member's background. Throughout my school days, I developed a passion for the study of history and particularly the themes of conflict and identity. As language is closely related to historical studies, I began studying Mandarin Chinese during my senior year of high school. After obtaining a Bachelors degree in History from Bob Jones University, I moved to Northeast China where I lived for three years. For the first two years, I taught Oral English at Jilin University of Finance and Economics and learned a great deal about effective teaching methods and continue to do so. During my third year in China, a Confucius Scholarship allowed me to study Advanced Chinese at Northeast Normal University. Living in China provided daily opportunities to improve my Chinese and learn related culture.Having experienced many ups and downs before becoming fluent in Mandarin Chinese, I thoroughly enjoy helping others tackle this challenging but rewarding language. With the exception of Chinese, history is my favorite subject to tutor. I have tutored many in history by using an approach that stresses, "understanding the narrative." My students focus on learning historical narratives, instead of only memorizing dates and terms. Additionally, I have successful experience with taking GRE Verbal. This fall, I plan to study International Relations/Middle East Studies at the graduate level.

Hi I'm Tess! I'm a Mathematics major at UNC Charlotte with minors in Linguistics and Cognitive Science. I've been tutoring for 4 years now and have worked with students ranging from ages 10 to 50. My specialty is math, specifically Algebra and Trigonometry, as I have the most experience tutoring in these areas. I have experience as a teaching assistant for MATLAB and I'm also proficient in Java. No matter what subject I'm tutoring, one of my main goals with each student is to help them develop critical thinking and problem solving skills that they can apply to areas beyond what we go over in a tutoring session.

I was born and raised in Hong Kong, and I currently live in Pittsburgh, PA. I have a BA in Rhetorical Communication from University of Pittsburgh, and I will return to Pitt in August 2016 to pursue a Master of Health Administration (MHA). My day job is Patient Advocate for Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, but my evening job is teaching Cantonese. I have taught Cantonese since 2014.Teaching Cantonese is very important to me because I love sharing my language and culture with others, and I feel very fulfilled from helping students learn a new language. I have two philosophies when teaching Cantonese: 1) practice makes perfect, 2) listen and watch. I believe Cantonese students become successful when they use these two philosophies to learn the tones, unique sounds, and complex phrases. My interests are in public health and hospital administration. I am more than happy to share or give advice about working in the health field. Outside of work, I am the Children's Ministries leader at my church and a Red Cross disaster services volunteer. In terms of hobbies, I like to play the piano and read superhero comic books.

Elementary School Math Tutor • +16 Subjects

I am a great tutor because I hold education to a high standard. I believe that every child should have access to a great education; if they aren't allowed that in school, then that's where tutors step in to fill their gaps with knowledge. I work hard to make sure students understand connections between topics and concepts so that they can move on to the next level within that concept. I love watching the moment the student "gets it" and feels confident within themselves when they finally realize they can do it on their own. What sets me apart from other tutors is that they tutor for a paycheck, however, my paycheck is seeing the light bulb go off in a students' head once they understand what I am teaching them. Some of the students that I've tutored have psychological hardships which makes learning a challenge for them; I make sure I work even harder to help connect the dots for them. I am a reliable tutor for your student because I am patient, work hard, produce results and never miss an appointment.

I am a graduate of The University of Texas at Dallas (whoosh) and most recently, Louisiana State University (geaux tigers). At UTD, I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a focus on geriatric disorders and my Bachelor of Science in Speech Pathology with a focus on feeding and swallowing disorders. At LSU, I received my Master of Arts in Communication Disorders with a concentration and thesis on feeding and swallowing disorders within the pediatric population, in particular premature babies. During my time at both LSU and UTD, I tutored in various capacities. I was a teaching assistant for a Statistics class for 5 semesters at UTD. At LSU, I tutored student athletes for 15 months in various subjects. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Math. In my experience helping students (elementary-college), Math always seems to be a subject where students have a mental block. It is always a pleasure to get through that block and break (seemingly) complex problems into their parts and then watch the student work through the problem on their own. I am a strong believer in continued learning throughout life and try to instill this drive within my students. In my spare time, I enjoy music (both playing and listening), swimming, running, cooking, and traveling.

Hallo, Guten Tag, Bonjour, Hola, Bom dia and Hello!I am an instructor of German and English as a Second Language (ESL) at Indiana State University, where I work part-time. I teach on campus German elementary and intermediate German classes and all levels of ESL writing classes, as well as summer language and ESL writing classes. As an instructor of the lower level German classes, my goal is to introduce the German language to students through culture, and to show new language learners the joys and possibilities that come with learning a new language. On the intermediate and advanced level, the focus is on teaching language through culture, as well. At the higher levels the focus is also on working on each of the four skills, reading, speaking, writing and reading, more intensively. I teach German and ESL, because I grew up learning foreign languages, and find that knowing at least one foreign language should be everybody's life goal! I've walked (and still am) many miles in a language learners shoes, and it has been a fun walk. I want to share my experience and expertise with YOU! I truly believe that everyone can learn a foreign language.Originally from Dsseldorf, Germany, I am now in my third year teaching German at Indiana State University. I am an ISU alum, having earned my M.A. in Language Studies/TESL with an emphasis on teaching German and ESL at ISU in 2014. I have a B.A. from the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, where I double-majored in Anglophone Studies and French Language and Culture. In addition to teaching German, I teach ESL writing courses for international students at ISU.Personal language and culture experience: My language and cultural exchange experience is extensive. I began learning English in 5th grade and French in 7th grade. My life has become truly international at age 16, when I first spent time abroad during high school, and later in college. I spent my time mostly in the U.S., and the French-speaking part of Switzerland. I know bits and pieces of other languages, such as Spanish (of course!), Portuguese, and I have fun deciphering Dutch and Danish, because it is so close to German. In the U.S., I have lived in California, Kansas, Washington D.C., Colorado and Indiana. In my free time, I like to travel, be it overseas or just taking a quick trip to Bloomington or any of the other cities in close proximity. I love to discover new music, magazines (all languages!) and books and have been on sports teams all my life. Before college I rode horses for as long as I can think and ran track and cross-country. Lately I have been keeping active and balanced doing Crossfit. I've never tried yoga, but really want to; it is the very next item on the to-do list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bar Exam success requires mastering multiple subjects simultaneously while developing test-taking strategies—a challenge many students underestimate. Common struggles include managing the sheer volume of material across seven subjects (Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law, Evidence, Real Property, and Torts), distinguishing between state-specific rules and uniform principles, and applying knowledge under time pressure. Additionally, many students struggle with essay writing under exam conditions and with identifying relevant issues quickly across fact patterns. Personalized tutoring addresses these specific pain points by helping you focus on your weakest areas rather than reviewing material you've already mastered.

Bar prep courses provide comprehensive subject review and practice, but they deliver the same curriculum to thousands of students simultaneously. Personalized tutoring allows a tutor to adapt instruction to your learning style, focus on the specific subjects or essay types where you're struggling most, and adjust pacing based on your progress. For example, if you're strong in Contracts but weak in Evidence, a tutor can spend less time on foundational Contracts concepts and more time on Evidence strategies, rule application, and practice problems. This targeted approach helps you maximize your study time and identify gaps before test day.

Effective Bar Exam tutors combine deep subject matter expertise with test preparation strategy. Look for tutors who have passed the Bar themselves, understand the specific exam format you're taking (uniform bar exam, MBE, essays, or your state's unique requirements), and have experience identifying which rules and applications are tested most frequently. Strong tutors ask diagnostic questions early on to assess your knowledge gaps, teach issue-spotting and rule-application frameworks, and provide extensive feedback on your essay writing and multiple-choice reasoning. They should also be familiar with your state's specific rules if you're taking a state-specific exam component, and they should help you develop a realistic study schedule.

Most students begin tutoring 2-4 months before their Bar Exam date, though this varies based on your baseline knowledge and exam performance history. A typical tutoring schedule is 2-3 sessions per week, with each session focused on a specific subject or skill (essay writing, MBE strategy, specific rule mastery). Students who struggled with the Bar before often benefit from more frequent sessions early on, then taper frequency as they gain confidence. The total number of hours varies widely—some students need 20-30 hours of tutoring, while others benefit from 50+ hours. A tutor can help you develop a personalized timeline based on a diagnostic assessment of your knowledge and your target exam date.

Clear progress markers include improved performance on practice MBE questions (tracking your percentage correct by subject), stronger essay scores with better issue-spotting and rule application, faster issue identification on timed practice tests, and increased confidence explaining complex legal concepts. If you retook the Bar before, you should see significant improvement in your weakest subjects. Many students report completing Bar prep materials more efficiently with tutoring support, finishing with time for additional practice. Your ultimate measure of success is passing the Bar on your target date—tutors help you identify which preparation strategies work best for you and ensure you're spending time efficiently.

Yes—in fact, tutors are especially valuable after a failed attempt. Tutors can analyze your previous exam performance (if available), identify which subject areas or question types caused the most difficulty, and determine whether your struggle was knowledge-based, strategy-based, or anxiety-related. They help you avoid repeating the same study mistakes and focus intensively on the content or skills that didn't click the first time. Many students who failed find that personalized instruction targets their specific gaps more effectively than a second full bar prep course. A tutor can also help rebuild your confidence and develop coping strategies for test-day anxiety if that was a factor.

Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who specialize in Bar Exam preparation. Start by describing your situation—your target exam date, which Bar you're taking, your current study status, and any specific subjects where you need help. This helps match you with a tutor whose experience aligns with your needs. Once matched, your tutor will likely begin with a diagnostic assessment to understand your strengths and gaps, then work with you to create a structured study plan. You can meet with your tutor as frequently as your schedule and budget allow, adjusting frequency as needed throughout your prep period.
