Utah's academic standards push students toward genuine conceptual mastery — especially in math and science — and Washington's 10 schools are no exception. For students already performing well in algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, biology, or chemistry, the difference between good and exceptional often comes down to the depth of understanding that a 20:1 classroom ratio simply can't provide.
A first session with a vetted tutor through Varsity Tutors starts with a real assessment of your student's goals and learning style, then builds a focused plan from there. Whether the priority is stronger performance in core courses, standardized test prep, or gaining ground in a foreign language, students are matched with tutors who know Utah's curriculum standards and can move at exactly the right pace.

I'm not that guy! Like many students, understanding comes with repetition of principles and hard work. I have the perspective of a student trying to understand, not a teacher trying to preach. I love working with people from the ground up; we start at the comfort zone and work our way to improvement...

I am currently a student at Brigham Young University studying Applied Physics. After finishing my degree I am planning on pursuing a master's degree in Aerospace Engineering. Since January 2014 I have worked in the physics help lab at BYU. Throughout this time I have greatly enjoyed helping many students increase their understanding of physics. I love seeing my students have a "light-bulb" moment where suddenly everything we discussed makes sense to them. I think it is extremely important for everyone to have (at least) a basic understanding of math and science as this helps us to better understand our world. I am greatly motivated to teach in a way that my students understand the fundamental principles and not in a way that they can merely get the right answer. I love trying to pass on my enthusiasm for math and science to my students, and I am always looking for ways to show how cool and fun mastering these subjects can be. Although I am most passionate about physics, I also tutor math and Spanish. When I'm not studying or teaching I enjoy swimming, reading (especially Michael Crichton and Orson Scott Card), and exchanging movie quotes with my roommates. Hobbies: art, movies, reading, swimming, writing, books, music, hiking

I am from Nashville, Tennessee but have lived in seven different states all over the U.S. I currently attend Brigham Young University and am loving it. I enjoy the one-on-one interaction I get with people when I tutor. Watching people really understand and be excited about learning is what makes it worthwhile for me. The key is to spark the fun and excitement of learning within the student. I have tutored primarily middle and high school students but am comfortable with any age. I tutor many subjects, but am especially proficient in the areas of test preparation, math, and Spanish. I took several AP classes, was on the honor roll, and was blessed to receive a full-tuition National Merit scholarship for college. I currently have an open major but am leaning toward a degree in finance or information systems. I am fluent in Spanish thanks to a two-year mission for my church. Because of this I am now part of a Hispanic volunteer group helping children learn to read more fluently. I played rugby and football, and I love doing things outdoors, whether it be hiking, going to the lake, skiing, or backpacking. I have also traveled to many parts of the world and enjoy having new experiences and learning about other cultures.

I'm Garrett and I live in Salt Lake City and I want to help you understand topics in natural science and mathematics. I have a bachelor's degree in geological science (geophysics) from University of Colorado Boulder with a minor in mathematics. Part of my success in college came from the preparation I had from taking AP Calculus and Physics courses in high school. I'm a huge fan of visual aids and examining real-life examples and applications when teaching. I worked as a learning assistant in an astronomy lab course and as a tutor for student athletes in geology while attending CU. I've been honing the ability to craft perfect analogies to help you make sense of mathematical or physical concepts.

I am dedicated to helping my students achieve their full potential as my own personal goal. When I worked as a tutor at the Burbridge Athletics Academic Center at the University of Utah, where I also earned my Bachelors of Science in Physics, I developed a passion for education, which I intend to continue with now that I have moved to Washington DC. I am able to tutor students in Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science, having developed experience as part of my pursuit of that degree. I also have an intense interest in History, which I pursued in my general educational requirements of that same degree. I am a kinesthetic learner, and I believe that the best way to develop an understanding of a subject is to do, rather than watch or listen.

Hobbies: travel, reading, music, writing, art, sports, books, traveling

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students from across Washington's 10 schools with personalized tutoring support. Whether your student attends a school in the Washington City or nearby areas, we match them with tutors who understand Utah's curriculum standards and can help them succeed in their specific courses and grade level.
Utah's standards emphasize critical thinking, problem-solving, and deep conceptual understanding—especially in math and science. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction helps students move beyond surface-level learning by targeting their specific gaps and building confidence in these key areas. Tutors work with students to master the concepts tested on Utah assessments while developing the analytical skills the state standards require.
Students in Washington commonly seek support in math (algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus), science (biology and chemistry), and English language arts—subjects where personalized instruction makes the biggest difference. We also work with students preparing for standardized tests and those needing support in foreign languages, which are increasingly important in Utah schools.
With an average student-teacher ratio of 20:1 in Washington schools, classroom teachers often can't provide the individualized attention every student needs to truly master challenging material. Personalized tutoring fills that gap by giving your student dedicated, one-on-one support tailored to their learning style and pace—something that's difficult to achieve in a traditional classroom setting.
During the first session, the tutor and student get to know each other and identify specific learning goals—whether that's improving grades, preparing for a test, or building confidence in a tough subject. The tutor assesses your student's current understanding and learning style, then develops a personalized plan to help them succeed. This foundation makes all future sessions more effective and focused.
Pricing varies based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions—we work with families to find a plan that fits their budget and goals. Many Washington families start with weekly sessions and adjust from there. We're transparent about costs upfront, and you can discuss your specific needs when connecting with a tutor.
Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who have deep subject expertise and experience helping students succeed in their specific areas. Many tutors have backgrounds in education, hold relevant degrees, or have extensive tutoring experience. All tutors are vetted to ensure they can provide high-quality, personalized instruction aligned with what Washington students need.
Simply tell us about your student's needs—their grade level, subject, and specific goals—and we'll match them with a tutor who's a great fit. You can start with a single session to see if it's the right match, and many families find that consistent tutoring leads to noticeable improvements in confidence and grades within a few weeks.
