My tutoring approach is one of coaching, mentoring, and helping the student understand exactly what level and detail of help that they need to get ahead. Combining the personal discipline learned during 20 years as a Naval Officer with the unique expertise learned in one-on-one communication with peers and sailors as well as my five children, I can help you or your child succeed. A Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, and a Math Minor help qualify me for tutoring in many subjects. My individualized tutoring methods also raised my step-son's Physics grade from a C to an A in one semester. I specialize in mathematics (basic arithmetic through calculus) but can help in many other subjects. Learning should be fun, but should also, at times, bring "Instant" results. I work to keep positive encouragement in every lesson, tutoring, or test preparation session. I speak fluent Spanish!

As a current Economics student at Dartmouth College, I am passionate about helping students develop a strong understanding of mathematics, particularly in subjects like Algebra, Calculus, and Pre-Calculus. With over 2 years of tutoring experience, I focus on creating a supportive learning environment where students feel confident to tackle challenging concepts. My approach emphasizes clear explanations and practical problem-solving, tailored to each student's unique learning style. It is my top priority to guide students in gaining confidence and a deep understanding on how to think and how to approach problems that translate to the classroom, and I am committed to cresting a love for math that extends beyond the classroom. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy competing in baseball on Dartmouth's team and going on hikes with my friends as well as playing the guitar in my free time.

I returned to higher education, moving to Boston where I conducted research, taught, and studied Clinical Psychology. After completing a Master of Liberal Arts in Clinical Psychology at Harvard University, I moved to Salt Lake City, UT to pursue a PhD in Psychology (Clinical Neuropsychology). I am a student at the University of Utah majoring in Mathematics, and I am loving every minute of it. I plan to go Medical School, but I chose Math as my major because it has been a love of mine since elementary school. My favorite part of the week is when I volunteer at the Best Friends Animal Society, and during my free time, I like to read and hang out with my friends. During my time as a tutor, I have found that I love to teach and encourage students because it reminds me of the support that I have day to day as I follow my ambitions.

I am currently a doctoral candidate in clinical psychology, but I have been tutoring ever since I was in elementary school. Because not everyone learns the same way, I feel that it is easy for students to miss certain tidbits or whole subjects in the classroom, and it can quickly feel like it is too late to catch up. My goal is to work together to pick up the pieces that were lost or are close, but not quite there: learning the way you want to learn and the way you learn best rather than having topics taught at you.

I am currently studying Elementary Education at Brigham Young University. I am also minoring in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and Spanish DLI (Dual Language Immersion). I am fluent in Spanish because I lived in Mexico for 18 months, but I also went through the language learning process in high school classes and understand the challenges students face. I love teaching and tutoring anyone with a desire to improve, especially elementary aged students. I try to make learning fun and accessible to each individual student's learning style. In my spare time I like to read, cook, play tennis and paint.

I am from Nashville, Tennessee but have lived in seven different states all over the U.S. I currently attend Brigham Young University and am loving it. I enjoy the one-on-one interaction I get with people when I tutor. Watching people really understand and be excited about learning is what makes it worthwhile for me. The key is to spark the fun and excitement of learning within the student. I have tutored primarily middle and high school students but am comfortable with any age. I tutor many subjects, but am especially proficient in the areas of test preparation, math, and Spanish. I took several AP classes, was on the honor roll, and was blessed to receive a full-tuition National Merit scholarship for college. I currently have an open major but am leaning toward a degree in finance or information systems. I am fluent in Spanish thanks to a two-year mission for my church. Because of this I am now part of a Hispanic volunteer group helping children learn to read more fluently. I played rugby and football, and I love doing things outdoors, whether it be hiking, going to the lake, skiing, or backpacking. I have also traveled to many parts of the world and enjoy having new experiences and learning about other cultures.

I am currently working on obtaining an English Teaching degree to better be able to accomplish that mission. I want to get a job as a high school English teacher after graduating from BYU. I have had several long-term opportunities to tutor, both unpaid and professionally and I recently received my Level 1 Tutoring certificate from the College Reading and Learning Association.

I'm Matthew. I look forward to getting to know you or someone you love, as well as helping them succeed in their endeavors to master whatever tests, subjects, or ideas they wish. I am a student at Brigham Young University, and am currently an undecided major. I have a passion for tutoring and helping my pupils succeed. I am charismatic, fun, hardworking, spontaneous, and reliable! I am more than a guy with a brain; I have an ability to connect with people on a personal level. As you will see, my various tactics and approaches when it comes to tutoring are as effective as they are unique and engaging.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students from across South Jordan's 23 schools with expert tutors. Whether your student attends a school in the Jordan School District, Canyons School District, or other local districts, we match them with tutors who understand Utah's curriculum standards and can provide personalized support tailored to their specific school's expectations.

With an average student-teacher ratio of 20.4:1 in South Jordan schools, many students benefit from the focused attention that 1-on-1 personalized instruction provides. Tutors work at your student's pace, identify specific gaps in understanding, and adapt their teaching approach in ways that aren't always possible in larger classroom settings—helping students build confidence and master challenging concepts.

Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who are familiar with Utah's Core Standards and how they're taught in local schools. Whether your student needs support with math proficiency, reading comprehension, science concepts, or other state-aligned skills, tutors tailor instruction to ensure students not only understand the material but also develop the competencies Utah schools emphasize.

South Jordan students seek tutoring across a wide range of subjects, with algebra, geometry, and advanced math courses being particularly common requests, along with science preparation for honors and AP courses. We also work with students on standardized test preparation, writing skills, and subject-specific support as they progress through middle and high school coursework.

During the first session, the tutor will assess your student's current understanding, learning style, and specific challenges in the subject area. They'll discuss goals—whether that's improving a grade, preparing for a test, or building foundational skills—and create a personalized plan that fits your student's schedule and learning needs. This foundation helps ensure every subsequent session is focused and productive.

Varsity Tutors understands that South Jordan students balance school, extracurriculars, and family commitments. Tutors work with flexible scheduling to fit your student's availability—whether that's after school, evenings, weekends, or during school breaks. You can adjust frequency and timing based on your student's needs, making it easier to fit consistent support into a busy schedule.

Tutoring rates vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions. Varsity Tutors works with families to find options that fit different budgets, and we're transparent about pricing from the start. We recommend discussing your specific needs with our team so we can connect you with a tutor whose rates and availability align with your family's situation.

Results vary by student and depend on factors like starting point, frequency of tutoring, and effort invested. Many students see improvements in grades, test scores, and confidence within a few weeks of consistent 1-on-1 instruction. Others benefit from long-term support that helps them build stronger foundational skills and develop more effective study habits that serve them throughout their education.
