At a student-teacher ratio of 22.8:1 across Magna's 8 schools, even capable students rarely get the focused attention that turns solid understanding into real mastery. Whether a student is working through algebra and geometry, building on literacy benchmarks, or preparing for standardized assessments, one-on-one instruction lets them move at their own pace — asking questions, going deeper, and building the kind of confidence that shows up in grades.
Each tutor matched through Varsity Tutors is vetted for subject expertise and familiarity with Utah's Core Standards, so sessions reinforce exactly what students are learning in class. The first session establishes a personalized plan based on your student's goals and learning style, and most families see meaningful progress within four to six weeks of consistent work. Scheduling is flexible — weekly sessions, exam prep bursts, or year-round support — whatever fits your family's calendar.

I'm not that guy! Like many students, understanding comes with repetition of principles and hard work. I have the perspective of a student trying to understand, not a teacher trying to preach. I love working with people from the ground up; we start at the comfort zone and work our way to improvement...

I am currently a student at Brigham Young University studying Applied Physics. After finishing my degree I am planning on pursuing a master's degree in Aerospace Engineering. Since January 2014 I have worked in the physics help lab at BYU. Throughout this time I have greatly enjoyed helping many students increase their understanding of physics. I love seeing my students have a "light-bulb" moment where suddenly everything we discussed makes sense to them. I think it is extremely important for everyone to have (at least) a basic understanding of math and science as this helps us to better understand our world. I am greatly motivated to teach in a way that my students understand the fundamental principles and not in a way that they can merely get the right answer. I love trying to pass on my enthusiasm for math and science to my students, and I am always looking for ways to show how cool and fun mastering these subjects can be. Although I am most passionate about physics, I also tutor math and Spanish. When I'm not studying or teaching I enjoy swimming, reading (especially Michael Crichton and Orson Scott Card), and exchanging movie quotes with my roommates. Hobbies: art, movies, reading, swimming, writing, books, music, hiking

I am from Nashville, Tennessee but have lived in seven different states all over the U.S. I currently attend Brigham Young University and am loving it. I enjoy the one-on-one interaction I get with people when I tutor. Watching people really understand and be excited about learning is what makes it worthwhile for me. The key is to spark the fun and excitement of learning within the student. I have tutored primarily middle and high school students but am comfortable with any age. I tutor many subjects, but am especially proficient in the areas of test preparation, math, and Spanish. I took several AP classes, was on the honor roll, and was blessed to receive a full-tuition National Merit scholarship for college. I currently have an open major but am leaning toward a degree in finance or information systems. I am fluent in Spanish thanks to a two-year mission for my church. Because of this I am now part of a Hispanic volunteer group helping children learn to read more fluently. I played rugby and football, and I love doing things outdoors, whether it be hiking, going to the lake, skiing, or backpacking. I have also traveled to many parts of the world and enjoy having new experiences and learning about other cultures.

I'm Garrett and I live in Salt Lake City and I want to help you understand topics in natural science and mathematics. I have a bachelor's degree in geological science (geophysics) from University of Colorado Boulder with a minor in mathematics. Part of my success in college came from the preparation I had from taking AP Calculus and Physics courses in high school. I'm a huge fan of visual aids and examining real-life examples and applications when teaching. I worked as a learning assistant in an astronomy lab course and as a tutor for student athletes in geology while attending CU. I've been honing the ability to craft perfect analogies to help you make sense of mathematical or physical concepts.

I am dedicated to helping my students achieve their full potential as my own personal goal. When I worked as a tutor at the Burbridge Athletics Academic Center at the University of Utah, where I also earned my Bachelors of Science in Physics, I developed a passion for education, which I intend to continue with now that I have moved to Washington DC. I am able to tutor students in Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science, having developed experience as part of my pursuit of that degree. I also have an intense interest in History, which I pursued in my general educational requirements of that same degree. I am a kinesthetic learner, and I believe that the best way to develop an understanding of a subject is to do, rather than watch or listen.

With an average student-teacher ratio of 22.8:1 in Magna schools, many students benefit from one-on-one attention that addresses their individual learning pace and gaps. Personalized tutoring complements classroom instruction by providing focused support on challenging concepts, allowing your student to ask questions without time pressure and build confidence in their abilities.
Tutors who work with Magna students are familiar with Utah's Core Standards and the specific curriculum frameworks used in local schools. They tailor instruction to align with what students are learning in class, whether that's math proficiency standards, literacy benchmarks, or science concepts, ensuring tutoring reinforces and extends classroom learning.
Students in Magna typically seek tutoring in math (especially algebra and geometry), English language arts, science, and test preparation for standardized assessments. We also work with students on study skills and homework support across all subjects, helping them develop strategies that transfer to their classroom success.
The first session focuses on getting to know your student—their learning style, current challenges, and academic goals. The tutor will assess where they stand in their subject, discuss what they're working on in class, and create a personalized plan to address gaps and build confidence. This foundation helps ensure every subsequent session is targeted and effective.
Many students show noticeable improvement within 4-6 weeks of consistent tutoring, though the timeline depends on the subject, the student's starting point, and frequency of sessions. Regular, focused practice combined with personalized instruction helps students build skills and confidence—and when tutoring aligns with classroom learning, progress often accelerates.
Tutors who connect with Magna students are vetted for subject expertise and teaching ability. Many have backgrounds in education, hold relevant degrees, or have demonstrated mastery in their subject areas. Varsity Tutors ensures a good match between tutor and student based on both academic needs and learning style.
