I am an experienced and well-qualified essay coach, and a tutor in language arts and German. I also tutor students who are preparing for the SAT. I earned my B.A. in Comparative Literature from Columbia University and an M.A. in German from UC Berkeley, where I taught college German and received training in foreign language pedagogy. I love to learn, I am drawn to travel, and the experiences I have had enrich my work as a tutor. For me, tutoring is about more than making the grade or getting the right score; I always strive to foster insights and new skills that will help my students take charge of their own education.

I am a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. I've always loved Math and the Sciences: the hunt for the right equation to use, the unravelling of the mystery of the value of x. I want to show my students to see these subjects as I do: as a challenge, not a chore. I try to do this by making things simple and showing straightforward techniques that students can use on their own to sidestep mental walls, thus building confidence. I love to see them succeed academically and value the opportunity to be a part of that success.

Eight years of tutoring the SAT and its cousin exam means Gray has watched the PSAT's question patterns evolve — and he knows exactly where the Writing and Language section overlaps with SAT conventions and where it diverges in difficulty. His government background sharpens his approach to the evidence-based reading passages, where understanding how political and social-science arguments are structured lets him teach students to eliminate wrong answers before they even finish reading the choices. A 1590 SAT and 5.0 rating back that up.

Scoring 1510 on the SAT gave Rosanne deep familiarity with the question styles and pacing strategies that carry directly into PSAT prep — the two tests share the same structure, just with a tighter score range. She zeroes in on the evidence-based reading passages and command-of-evidence questions that trip up most students, breaking down how to eliminate answer choices efficiently. Her daily work teaching English composition and math to upper-elementary students also keeps her sharp at explaining foundational concepts from scratch.

I'm 24 years old, and I live in Portland, Oregon. I currently work overnight at homeless shelters, and hope to tutor consistently in my spare time. This fall, I will transfer into Reed College to study philosophy as a junior. I have taken the last four years off of school to travel, handle some medical issues, work hard, and do some soul-searching. I enjoy reading and writing, being outside and active, cooking and eating good food, playing guitar, climbing rock and ice, and being alive. I am extremely passionate about learning, and love to get people excited about it as well. I like to say that I teach "maieutically;" which comes from the Greek and means "to midwife, or aid in giving birth," in this sense, to an idea. I prefer to ask the student lots of guiding questions, instead of didactically infusing them with answers. This method results in what I like to call "intellectual exhilaration," in other words, the student is excited because they were able to create something out of themselves, instead of being imbued with the ideas of others something sort of rare for children, teens, and college students at times. I look forward to studying with you!

I am currently an undergraduate at the University of Southern California. I am majoring in Health and Human Sciences and minoring in Spanish, and am also on the pre-medical track. Growing up, I had difficulty in school understanding concepts in science, which originally dissuaded me from pursuing career in science. However, when I eventually found the right tutors, everything began to make sense to me and I realized how much I enjoyed learning when I could understand the material. It was empowering and I felt proud and confident in myself when the concepts started clicking. Because of my experiences, I decided to start tutoring to help others experience that feeling of finally understanding a tough concept. While I tutor a variety of different subjects, I've always been most passionate about concepts concering the NREMT, English, Spanish, and basic level mathematics. For the last four years, I've been tutoring a wide range of students, from elementary school kids to college students, and I absolutely love watching their level of understanding grow as they discover new concepts. I know firsthand how difficult it can be to seek tutoring, and I try to be as approachable as possible while continuing to emphasize the power of learning and the confidence that accompanies it. I also firmly believe that learning should not only be educational, but fun as well!

Varsity Tutors matches Salem students with expert PSAT tutors for 1-on-1 instruction. We pair each student with a tutor based on their specific needs, learning style, and goals.

Whether you need homework help, exam prep, or want to get ahead, our PSAT tutors are ready to help.

Common challenges include gaps from earlier material, difficulty with specific concepts, and trouble applying learning to new problems. These issues can snowball quickly in PSAT.

A tutor identifies where you're stuck, fills in gaps, and provides targeted practice. The 1-on-1 format means you get help exactly where you need it.

Tutors work with your student's actual coursework—homework assignments, class notes, and upcoming tests. This keeps tutoring directly relevant to what's happening in the classroom.

When you share information about your student's school and curriculum, we can match you with a tutor who has relevant experience.

All tutors complete background checks, credential verification, and teaching evaluation. Many of our PSAT tutors hold advanced degrees or have years of teaching experience.

You can review tutor profiles to find someone with the right background for your student's level and needs.

Many students see improved grades within a few weeks, along with better understanding of PSAT concepts and more confidence tackling challenging material.

Tutors track progress and adjust their approach to ensure continued improvement.

Most students benefit from 1-2 sessions per week. More frequent sessions help if your student is significantly behind or has an important exam coming up.

Your tutor can recommend a schedule based on your student's specific situation and goals.

Tutoring is purchased in packages of hours, with rates varying by tutor experience. Varsity Tutors offers several options to fit different budgets and needs.

You can discuss pricing during your consultation to find what works best.

Your tutor will assess where your student is, discuss goals, and start working on priority areas. Most students bring current homework or upcoming test material to focus on.
