The most important thing I've learned from my experience with tutoring and teaching is that energy, ability to connect, and character make a fantastic teacher. During my time in the corporate world, I realized that I had a genuine interest in helping everyone succeed. After some time volunteering with students, I realized that my passion was for helping students succeed. Not necessarily just earning the grades, but developing confidence and motivation to help them through their remaining academic career. After a career transition from engineering to teaching, I have felt more fulfilled than ever before. Using my real world experiences to help students make the "why do I need to learn this" connection is one of my strengths. Seeing the look on a student's face when they have that break through moment is one of the most rewarding experiences I have had in my time with teaching. I am a graduate of the University of California, San Diego. I received my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biochemistry. I am currently studying for the MCAT and preparing for medical school applications to one day become a physician. During my undergraduate schooling, I worked with and mentored high school students through a program with the university and their cancer center, to promote higher learning in disadvantaged and underrepresented minority students. This ultimately will increase the number of minorities in biomedical research. Working with students and empowering their minds is uplifting because it is wonderful to be able to promote a fun environment while encouraging the students to stay focused in their education. This December, I will finish a MA at San Francisco State University in English composition, focusing in-depth on all types of writing and how to teach writing to K-12 and university students and business professionals. As a graduate student, I taught a university-level writing-intensive course to freshmen, the type of composition writing course that the AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature and Composition exams prepare high school students to study for and get college credit with a high score on the AP exam.I firmly believe that my passion and expertise in writing, literature, and history will help students reach their potential and improve their knowledge, skills, and their passion even if they are not yet engaged with the humanities and social sciences.
