Originally from Marin County, CA, I recently graduated from Whitman College, where I received my degree in astrophysics with a minor in Japanese. I’ve always gravitated towards math and came to appreciate it as a language all of its own. Awareness of math as an invaluable tool came to me later, after I’d developed a strong interest in physicsand astronomy, fields that rely on math heavily. I’ve also taken the time to nurture my passion for the Japanese language and culture. During college, I spent two semesters in Kyoto, Japan, where I participated in an intensive language and emersion program.During my undergraduate years I tutored students for three semesters and saw how I could gently encourage making the subject “one’s own” in a friendly, supportive way. I’m patient and flexible when it comes to changing my approach based on a student’s particular learning needs. Rather than simply showing my method for solutions, I make note of how students tackle problems, and their thinking gives me guidance concerning strategies that will improve on their own methods. I enjoy the challenge of finding novel ways to help students make learning easier. I have loved science ever since I was a kid and watched The Magic School Bus and the Bill Nye show. I majored in Neuroscience and Behavior in college, so I learned a lot about Biology and Psychology, and I plan on getting a Master's in Bioengineering. I spent two years serving with the Peace Corps in Peru, where I learned to speak Spanish, build stoves out of adobe, and a lot about life in rural communities. In my spare time I enjoy playing harp and guitar, learning new languages, and being outdoors.

I am currently in my third year of my undergraduate at the University of Washington studying chemistry. One day, I hope to attain my PhD in Chemsitry as well. As a student, I have come to the realization that students don't do well in classes that are strictly lecture based. Students learn in several different ways, and I will adjust myself to those learning styles, whether auditory, visual, kinesthetic, or some combination of the three. I will commit to teaching students that are seeking furthering their minds and intelligence.Generally, I tutor students from grades K-12. The subjects I tutor are as follows: elementary math, middle school math, pre-algebra, algebra 1 and 2, physiology, science, Japanese, piano, and music theory. I really enjoy teaching piano and music theory because it just so happens to be my passion. I learned how to play the piano when I was six and have yet to stop.Apart from academia, I attempt to go outside, but I enjoy the comfort of my own home with books and tea and blankets. But when I do leave the house, I enjoy going rock climbing, walking aimlessly through parks, and trying out new restaurants. If I had a more fuel efficient car, I would spend a good deal of time going on road trips. I have also been in orchestra since freshman year of high school.

I am a graduate of the University of New Mexico and I have also studied at Waseda University. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Languages, focusing on Spanish, Arabic, and Japanese. I was lucky enough to study for two semesters in Japan and one semester in Mexico. Upon graduation, I work in the medical field and have done some part-time private tutoring by being a conversation partner for students wanting to learn and practice English and Spanish, and have been a Senpai to students that are beginners in Japanese. I speak English and Spanish fluently, and Arabic and Japanese at an intermediate/conversational level. My favorite approach is through immersion and using gestures or visual aids. I also love helping with writing as writing is always fun! I am continuing to study and expand my knowledge of Arabic and Japanese at the moment (For Arabic, I can only do conversation and basic stuff confidently.) I attended Carnegie Mellon University with a focus on Acting and Medieval Literature. I grew up in a family of teachers, and I spent my years in high school and in college working as a peer tutor. While at university, I also served as a part-time English teacher at two elementary schools in inner city Pittsburgh. Since college, I have lived and worked as a tutor in New York, Los Angeles, and Barcelona. While I tutor a wide range of subjects, I am most passionate about English, History, Math, and the SAT. I am fascinated by the SAT. I love teaching struggling test takers how to view the SAT as an approachable, accessible set of riddles and games instead of as an intellectual brick wall. I firmly believe that the majority of people can find great joy in academics once they discover the individual approach that works for them. I see it as my job to help them find that path.
