Session Summaries by Physical Chemistry Tutors

Renton, WA Physical Chemistry tutoring
During the session we read pages D6 to D10 in the student's science book. The pages had corresponding questions on the page he was to complete for homework. The reading was about the different climate zones on Earth and what causes them. He had a good understanding of what causes the different climates and was able to describe the answers in detail. When reading the chapter aloud, he had a tendency to misread some sentences, but what he read did not take away from the meaning. For example, instead of saying "winds blow" he would say "wind blowing". He also would insert so connecting words, such as "the", "as", "is," etc. It seemed as though he was trying to read quickly, so it may be helpful if he just slows down and takes his time to focus on what he is reading. He is currently studying time in math and has a good understanding of the topic.

Today was the final day before the test for the student, so we did a total review of every topic that would be on there. We went through the textbook, study guide and our personal notes. She just has to work on memorizing and retaining the information for the test and she's good to go!

Neither of the two students had any significant problems with their most recent review. Student A understands the concepts in chemistry currently, but I answered several good questions about weak/ strong acids and bases and how they behave in titration. Student B seems to be doing well with his geometry, but still needs to slow down in his work process. We will continue to work on this. Otherwise, he understands the methods used very well. In physics, we reviewed several problems on past exams - many of these were avoidable errors, though I also had him verbally explain his thought process to the correct answer. We will continue with physics review at the next session.

This was my first meeting with this student. As her final coming up is cumulative, we started back at topics introduced early in the year such as stoichiometry, balancing equations, and periodicity, to make sure that she feels comfortable with questions covering these. These topics will be built upon as they recur in later topics covered in the second semester material.
