Session Summaries by SSAT Tutors

Pasadena, CA SSAT tutoring
Today we worked on Reading Comprehension. Discussed strategies for the test including eliminating answers, skimming questions before reading, pacing about 5 minutes per passage, and consistently referring to the passage for answers (NOT answering from memory). She seems to need the most practice with main idea/theme questions and a little with inference questions as well. We did several timed practice segments, and she seemed to improve in finding a balance between answers that were too general, too specific, or not quite right.

I met with the student this afternoon to continue our review of math for the assessment. He did pretty well on his homework problems. We talked about strategies for eliminating wrong answer choices to make intelligent guesses rather than leaving a blank. I left him with an entire reading comprehension section to do for homework. We talked about a strategy of taking quick notes while reading each paragraph of the reading comprehension section.

Today, I introduced the student to some general SSAT strategies, and had him find answers to a few different problems from each section to get a sense of his strengths. His arithmetic and verbal reasoning are both very strong, which will help him a lot in the quantitative and reading sections. I assigned him two sections for homework (a quantitative and a writing section) and soon I'll have a good idea of the areas he needs the most improvement in. For him, improving test-taking skills will be a higher priority than learning the material for the exam (as he already knows most of the material).

The student and I started off by reviewing her vocabulary list, made from unknown words from other sessions. She did very well on these and got all of them correct. We then did 15 analogy questions. I then gave her a strategy for reading including question-labeling and rewording; we practiced this with two passages (eight questions). The student improved over our practice time. After reading, we worked on several math questions. We reviewed fraction, decimal, and percent operations, which the student was very familiar with, and we also reviewed a strategy for plugging in answers and replacing variables with numbers.

I went over the student's practice Upper Level test with him and discussed some of his Reading Comprehension answers. He did quite well on the Reading Comp overall. His verbal scores were very good on the synonyms, and he had no trouble with the verbal analogies. Then we turned to his SSAT math practice and worked primarily on word problems involving averages, and then on to some geometry problems.

During this session, the student completed two writing prompts from planning to finished product. He has developed nicely in the content and the focus of our remaining time is to time out his writing with benchmarks to help him track his writing on test day. He continues to acknowledge that the planning phase is still the most challenging, and he has set a goal to plan his essay including an outline in under eight minutes. Today he met this goal with one of the two prompts. We completed practice problems in the area of reading. In math we returned to the concept of circles, a previous area of improvement for him. We finished with work on equations, angles and the Pythagorean theorem.
