I started tutoring professionally in 2002 while I was in college. In 2004, I tutored English, French, Latin, and constitutional government for Baylor University's Student-Athlete Services and stayed there the first two years of law school. I love working with foreign languages. I speak English natively, French fluently, and Spanish and Arabic proficiently. I also can read and write Arabic.

A common hurdle in learning the Classics is the long task of learning the language before you can enjoy all the brilliant and moving literature it has to offer. Sometimes students are even told they are "bad at" a language, before they have had the chance to achieve small accomplishments and look forward to bigger ones. The way into Latin and Greek is confidence through mastering the building blocks of the languages, enjoying the "strategy game" aspect of translation, and learning how to understand a thrilling culture and literature which is much closer to our own than we often realize.I studied Latin, Greek, and Classical Arabic at Oxford University in the UK and achieved an Oxford MA, Second Class First Division with an Open Exhibition Merit Scholarship. During the course of my studies, I was required to research and read the works of Homer, Herodotos, Thucydides, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Plato, Catullus, Cicero, Caesar, Lucretius, Propertius, Tibullus, Ovid, Vergil, Livy, Tacitus, Horace, Seneca, St. Jerome, and St. Augustine.I have taught dozens of students ranging from 4 to 64 years old, and have discovered that the secret weapon in successful tutoring is true passion for the subject material. It means I'm thrilled every time one of my students begins to understand a grammar concept or reads alone, and that enthusiasm for both small victories and language and literature that is yet to be studied is contagious.

I earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, a Bachelor of Arts in Latin, and a Master of Music in Historical Musicology at the University of Texas at Austin. I am certified to teach high school science, all areas, in Texas. Since graduating, I have worked internationally, in Hong Kong and El Salvador as a curriculum developer and classroom teacher. I have taught and tutored in both the humanities, social studies, sciences, and fine arts. In particular, my subjects include but are not limited to: chemistry, physics, astronomy, AP Environmental Science, environmental studies, Latin, Ancient Greek, algebra, music history, writing. Outside of academic and education, I am a fan of performing music, traveling, and cooking.Teaching and tutoring are forms of helping others to get to where they need or want to be. Some things are difficult to learn on one's own, or they are difficult with one version of learning those things. I hope to help others by providing a different or clear way of thinking about what gives them trouble.

My goal is to not just increase the grade in a subject, but increase knowledge ,understanding, and even interest in the subject. Too often students are being lost to boring lectures they are unable to relate to, it is my goal to find these students and bring back passion and interest to school. I plan to get my masters in both education and classics, and hope to help create a better education system that will work for all students.

I graduated Boston College, and I am loved the experience! I tutored extensively throughout high school, and so far I have continued this trend in college. Over my four years in high school, I tutored about 10 different students in areas such as English, Spanish (I am a native speaker), math, history, test prep, and even music performance. Now in college, I have 5 students, and I tutor them in math, reading, writing, grammar, proofreading, and in the development of useful skills such as time management, organization, staying focused and on task, and more.I find tutoring to be an extremely rewarding experience, both for the student and the tutor. Although it seems like the student is the only one learning, the tutor learns a great deal, as well. For instance, with each student I take on, I gain valuable experience that I can then use with another student. In addition, I love being able to assist a student in reaching their goals, be that a higher grade in a class, a deeper understanding of a specific topic, etc.I am a native speaker of Spanish- it was actually my first language! My entire family comes from (and still lives) in Galicia, the northwest province of Spain. Although I am fortunate enough to be bilingual, I still love tutoring others in the hopes that they will come to love the language just as much as I do.I took all the AP and Honors courses I could in high school, and although I placed out of my freshman English classes in college, I decided to take an extra English literature course out of my passion for the subject. I have worked towards having and using excellent grammar since a young age, and I find editing and proofreading to be a calming, enjoyable task.I began studying the violin when I was 6 years old, and it was only a few short years later that I decided to pursue it seriously. Since then, I have formed part of countless county and state-wide orchestras, as well as several symphonies on the national and international level. I have been lucky enough to perform in halls such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, United Palace, and more locations throughout the U.S. as well as Europe. I tutored music all throughout high school, and I am excited to continue doing so in college! If you happen to be interested in any of the areas I tutor in, please don't hesitate to contact me! I look forward to working with you!

I taught my first class back in the days of the Gerald Ford administration. I taught for 10 years before going into the law. I practiced law for 13 years but my real passion is teaching. I returned to teaching and have spent the last 23 years teaching Latin on the secondary level. I can't imagine that any other career would provide as much passion and satisfaction.I have learned that the brightest and most capable students sometimes come across a concept that they cannot master. This is where an extra help session with a teacher or a tutor becomes necessary. When a person feels sick, s/he sees a doctor. The patient tells the doctor what symptoms s/he is experiencing. The doctor will then be able to diagnose the condition and devise a treatment plan. Are you sick of the grades that you're getting? Show me recent assessments on which you have not performed as well as you wanted to. The mistakes you make on an assessment are basically symptoms of a problem. I can diagnose the problem and devise a treatment plan for you.

All students deserve the opportunity to succeed in their education, regardless of their background and the challenges they face. In 17 years as a professional educator, I have witnessed the reality that many of the students who need the most help are the last ones to receive it. I want to help any student who is willing to improve themselves and to develop their potential. School is challenging, and students need as many allies as possible to overcome their challenges. If I can assist my students along their journey to maturity and confidence, then I will consider myself a good teacher.I earned my undergraduate degree from Grove City College, PA (B.A. in History-Secondary Education/Social Studies), and I earned a Masters in Education from Penn State (York). In the fall I will begin taking classes to earn a Masters Degree in Special Education. I have worked in both public and private schools for over 17 years, teaching social studies (American and world history, military history, music history, economics), English (grammar, literature, reading comprehension), health/first aid, and Latin (introductory and middle school level). I tutor in history/social studies, especially in the writing of research papers for history classes. I also tutor in Latin (middle/early high school level) and English grammar/composition.My teaching philosophy is rooted in my firm belief that all students have innate skills, interests and abilities that they need to develop as they grow. Education is a lifelong journey, and the classroom is just one aspect of this journey. I also understand that school can be a struggle for many students, and traditional classroom learning is not always the best option for them. When I tutor students, I do my best to first listen to what they think about the subject and how they understand it. Then, I work to guide the students toward the solutions to the problems they are facing rather than just give them the answers. Communication is key to my tutoring style, because it's rare that an answer or solution suddenly appears in a few minutes - it takes clear and consistent dialogue to find the student's best understanding of any topic or assignment.American and world history are my favorite subjects to tutor because I enjoy helping students find their own connection to the topics that they are studying. Once the connection is made, the comprehension and analysis aspects of history open up to the student in ways that surprise and excite them. I am also partial to tutoring Latin because it's the foundation of the English language (66% of English words have a Latin root!) and it aids students at all levels with their vocabulary skills. When I'm not working with students, you will most likely find me outside, in the kitchen, or the workshop/garage. I love the outdoors, and I am an avid hiker, runner, kayaker, camper, and nature observer. Cooking fascinates me, and since I do much of the cooking in my household, I enjoy preparing healthy meals and trying out new recipes. I also read consistently, and I enjoy wood and metal working when I have the time. Physical fitness and sports are a major part of my life, so I also enjoy working out (at home and at the gym) and encouraging my family members (including my dog!) to do the same.

Anthropology Tutor • +33 Subjects

I am a graduate of Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Classical Antiquities (Roman and Greek civilizations) with a minor in Anthropology in 2008 and am expecting to receive my Master of Arts in Teaching in December 2014. In 2011, I received my Missouri teaching certifications for Latin (k-12), Social Studies (9-12), and English (9-12). I worked as a substitute teacher (k-12) for the Springfield R-XII public school system and Springfield Catholic Schools for many different subjects from 2009-2011. I have taught Latin for the past 3 years, and I am currently employed by Rockwood School district to teach Latin and Language Arts. I have tutored students in Latin off and on since 2006, my early students were referred to me by my college professors and, more recently, I have been meeting with my own students before and after school. As a teacher of a world language, I have wide ranging experiences with teaching grammar, social studies, and writing as they pertain to my subject. My favorite subjects to tutor are Latin, Anthropology, and Social Studies because I love to make the parallels, but I have wide ranging experience with many different subjects. I believe that all students can achieve success in classes, but some students need different explanations, approaches, or instructional methods. I have experience working with traditional Latin methods, as well as trying to integrate technology into my methods. I enjoy reading books of all types (my current genre of interest is Young Adult Fiction), playing with my dog, spending time with my family, baking and decorating cakes, and watching Doctor Who.
