Session Summaries by SAT Tutors

Hempstead, NY SAT tutoring
We completed 3 sections in reading, 1 in writing, and 1 in math. He is making progress in the reading, which we are focusing on to improve. The student should also spend some time doing practice on his own to boost his score. This will help make a significant improvement. We should also work on the math, which requires some additional practice. He also expressed interest in a need for physics, which I would be very happy to do. I have helped many students with physics.

The session began with the usual test corrections. I was worried about the number of mathematics questions the student did not answer, but we went over them, and I am hoping that the weekly review of different topics in mathematics will help prepare him for the eventual test. His critical reading questions were significantly better than previous exams. Although his sentence completion is not where it should be, we are working on building vocabulary which will help to alleviate his main issue with those questions. His passage based questions are significantly better. We spent the last 15 minutes or so reviewing key grammatical points.

The student's writing skills are very strong. His critical reading skills need a little more improvement, but he actually reads very quickly, which he can use to his advantage. He generally has about 10 minutes left over at the end of a reading section, so I told him he can use those ten minutes to go back and read the parts that pertain to each question more carefully.

In our first session, the student and I reviewed his previous performance on the SAT and discussed which areas were most challenging for him. I reassured him that with extended time for his second test administration, he could take more time and avoid jumping at answers, which seemed to be an issue he had been having. Since vocabulary was a struggle for him, we started a running list of new words for him to study from, and worked on some sentence completions and passages to practice vocabulary in the context of the test. We also review the strategies that he can use to tackle the SAT essay, in terms of outlining, timing, and selecting good examples. We then practiced outlining essays in response to the practice test prompts in our book. At the conclusion of our session we reviewed what he'd learned and I asked the student to study his vocabulary, complete a timed critical reading section, and write a practice SAT essay.

Today's session began with a guided practice of math concepts, working from section 2 of practice test 2. The student has shown progress in his knowledge of required math concepts, but more work is needed on problem solving for higher difficulty level problems. Next we did a timed practice of the Critical Reading section from section 4 of practice test 2. His vocab and problem solving have shown progress, but timing was an issue for this section.

We used the flashcards on the student's app to go over math and reading questions. She is taking the SAT next weekend, so I was interested to see how well she's able to answer questions on the spot rather than reviewing them with her after, as we usually do. I think she will do well. We'll meet again next weekend after the test to assess how she did and go over any questions or concerns.
