Howdy! My name's Joey, I love all things music and tech as well as hitting the gym. I hold degrees in mechanical and aerosapce engineering as well as scientific computing from the University of Glasgow and University of Pennsylvania. I've been an instructor and TA at both institutions and I greatly enjoy sharing knowledge!

I have an MBA from Rice University and both real-world business experience and teaching experience. Most recently, I taught a first-year college course in Microeconomics for nine years, in addition to other classes in the university's international trade program. My students came from over 30 countries! I've worked in over a dozen countries for the U.S. Department of Commerce, as well as for private firms in building engineering and the energy industry. I enjoy helping students gain competence and master their chosen area of study.

I am a PhD student at Carnegie Mellon University in the field of Electrical and Computer Engineering. I recently completed my bachelors also at Carnegie Mellon University in Electrical and Computer Engineering as well as Human Computer Interaction. Over the last several years, I have experience teaching a wide variety of students ranging from elementary school math, introduction to programming for children, as well as college level classes. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Math, Physics, and Computer Science. I really enjoy teaching programming, especially in fun and engaging ways. I like to relate what I teach to things my students are passionate about, or teach them through fun activities and games, so that they are easier to understand. I also help students prepare for standardized tests and have several strategies that I can share, especially for the math section of the tests. In my spare time, I enjoy dancing, music, hiking and anything outdoors!

I am a rising sophomore majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Data Science at Rice University in Houston, TX. Naturally, my favorite subjects to teach are math and computer science, particularly programming languages like Python, Java, and Scratch. I have found great enrichment in these seemingly daunting areas, and I hope to make them more easily accessible for others. As a founding member of the Ready for College Leadership club (RCL), I mentored high school freshmen and sophomores to help them succeed in high school and prepare for college admissions, while also providing academic aid. The best part of working with students is watching them grow not just as a learner, but also as a thinker. I always encourage students to be curious and let their true interests be incorporated into lessons. In my spare time, I love learning languages; I am a heritage Spanish speaker and a self-taught Portuguese speaker. I also enjoy playing guitar and practicing new songs to sing.

I am currently an undergraduate student at Rice University pursuing a bachelor of science in biochemistry and cell biology on the pre-med track. One of my most memorable experiences in the medical field has been working as a research intern at Texas Children's Hospital and collaborating with genetic specialists to publish a research paper about a rare genetic disease. Medicine is truly one of my greatest passions, and biology has been one of my favorite subjects to tutor through the peer mentorship program at my high school. Through this program, I have also extensively tutored math (from middle school math all the way through IB Mathematics) and find myself drawn by the methodical nature of the subject. Many times, I find that students simply label math as "difficult" because the concepts are brand new and numbers seem like a foreign language. Relating math concepts to simpler everyday ones is one of the many strategies I use when tutoring math, and I have found a lot of success through it. Throughout high school, I have been very active in my school community as the Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper, president of the Speech and Debate Team, and president and founder of the Random Acts of Kindness Club. Through these roles, I have mentored younger students in areas such as writing, research, and public speaking. Additionally, I am fluent in 4 languages (English, Urdu, Arabic, and Spanish), although my favorite one to teach is Spanish. Attending an international school has emphasized to me the importance of diversity, inclusion, and tolerance, and I believe that learning a new language is one of the best ways to reinforce these ideals. In my spare time, you can find me engrossed in arts and crafts, running my Etsy store, or volunteering my local art museum's kids' crafts classes. However, the desire to pass on my love of math and science, and the ability to solve problems, prompted me to pursue a teaching career. Working for the past three years as a full time teacher, I have been able to pass on my love for the principles of engineering and problem-solving in a private school environment. I have taught high school math, from PreAlgebra up to and including AP Calculus, as well as science, including Biology, Chemistry and Physics. I love the educational environment and interacting with the students. There is nothing I like more than showing students that math and science aren't the "boogie man" they believe they are and encouraging them to pursue STEM careers. In my personal life, I have been happily married for over 30 years and have two grown and successful children. I love sports, particularly tennis, football and volleyball. I also jog everyday and live reading and watching mysteries, gardening and cooking.
