Hi, my name is Jorge and I am from Lima Peru. Most of my academic experience is related to Biomedical sciences, in the fields of Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Cell Biology and development. During my PhD, I had a proactive role organizing scientific symposiums and retreats. This trained my presentation skills to share my research in important scientific meetings in the US: I won best poster award at the Gordon Research Conference (GRC) in 2022 and was an invited speaker at Cold Spring Harbor meeting in 2023, among others. Besides my research experience, I have a strong commitment to improve higher education in STEM. Since 2020, I co-direct the Research Experience for Peruvian Undergrads (REPU) program, that provides international scientific internships to Peruvian undergrads in top universities in the US and Europe. I have the chance to mentor undergards in STEM. Additionally, I am a native Spanish speaker, which allowed me to give Spanish lessons to some students in the USA. I want to use my best of my abilities to support students and build a career for myself in Education.

With a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Virginia and an MBA degree from Chicago Booth, I believe I bring a unique blend of perspectives and strategic thinking to the realm of tutoring. I graduated from Augustana University with my Bachelor's Degree in English Literature and Religion/Philosophy in 2019. I then completed my Masters in Humanities from the University of Chicago in 2020 and Masters in English Literature from University of St. Thomas in 2025. I was an English, Social Studies, and Spanish I was an English/History Instructor at a 1:1 school for middle school and high school students with learning differences. I was previously a college advisor for a nonprofit organization that assists college students from low-income backgrounds. I love encouraging students to develop their own writing and feel confident in their written communication skills! I am also eager to expand my teaching skills into more English Literature to share my passion for and knowledge the power of reading. Having had the great fortune to experience the transformative power of wonderful teachers, I've come to agree with this viewpointI've found my calling in education. I haven't always known that teaching was the vocation for me. Even though I've always taught, on some level, as a T.A., a private tutor, a classroom teacher, or a friend, I tried different jobs in the private sector for several years. However, upon much introspectionmy own enlightenmentI realized that teaching is my true calling. I have a passion for teaching, which is unmatched by any other field. Why do I teach? I teach because I know that I will learn something new from each teaching experience, with every student, with every day, without exception, and because this path is one that I know is beneficial to others and to society as a whole. One of my most memorable experiences in the medical field has been working as a research intern at Texas Children's Hospital and collaborating with genetic specialists to publish a research paper about a rare genetic disease. Medicine is truly one of my greatest passions, and biology has been one of my favorite subjects to tutor through the peer mentorship program at my high school. Through this program, I have also extensively tutored math (from middle school math all the way through IB Mathematics) and find myself drawn by the methodical nature of the subject. Many times, I find that students simply label math as "difficult" because the concepts are brand new and numbers seem like a foreign language. Relating math concepts to simpler everyday ones is one of the many strategies I use when tutoring math, and I have found a lot of success through it. Throughout high school, I have been very active in my school community as the Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper, president of the Speech and Debate Team, and president and founder of the Random Acts of Kindness Club. Through these roles, I have mentored younger students in areas such as writing, research, and public speaking. Additionally, I am fluent in 4 languages (English, Urdu, Arabic, and Spanish), although my favorite one to teach is Spanish. Attending an international school has emphasized to me the importance of diversity, inclusion, and tolerance, and I believe that learning a new language is one of the best ways to reinforce these ideals. In my spare time, you can find me engrossed in arts and crafts, running my Etsy store, or volunteering my local art museum's kids' crafts classes. I also love listening to music, creating music on my violin, and singing various genres.
