I am a recent graduate of Yale University and incoming first year medical student at Columbia University. Originally from the DC area, I have always had a passion for science and medicine and pursued a degree in Biology while at Yale. During the 2008-2009 academic year, I tutored science, math, English, history, and Mandarin Chinese part-time with a DC-based tutoring company. At Yale, I worked as a freshman counselor to provide academic and career advice to incoming freshmen. I have taken both SAT and MCAT test prep classes and am familiar with both tests as well as the preparation necessary to score well. My personal career goals include attending medical school to pursue either immunology/infectious diseases or psych/neurology, teaching biology at the university level, and working in public/global health with either the CDC or the WHO.

While I was a student, I worked in a drop-in tutoring center, helping my classmates with math and chemistry. During my junior year, I tutored a high school junior in algebra, and I am currently tutoring a middle school student in Mandarin. Tutoring is something I genuinely enjoy. I like helping people. I empathize with my tutees because I know what it is like to struggle with a new concept; I know what it is like to not understand something you feel you should understand. These are difficult experiences with which I am personally familiar. Thus, my main motivation for wanting to be a tutor is to help people overcome these difficulties and feel good about themselves in the process. An added bonus is the reward of better understanding the material I am teaching. Given that I have experience tutoring both math and Chinese, these are the subjects I am most comfortable teaching, specifically middle school and high school level math and beginning to intermediate Mandarin. That being said, I would be uncomfortable tutoring an absolute beginner in Mandarin because I believe pinyin and tones are best taught by a native Chinese speaker. In addition to math and Chinese, I would enjoy tutoring writing and English. Outside of academics, I have a number of hobbies. I love doing ceramics and have been taking classes since I was eight years old. I mostly do hand-building and have gone through a number of phases. When I was very young, most of the ceramic sculptures I made were dragons because I was obsessed with them. When I first began studying Chinese in high school, I made ceramic tiles with Chinese characters on them. Most recently, I have been making ceramic lotuses and sunflowers. Origami is another craft I enjoy. It is a fun, relaxing, and portable activity as folding paper can be done virtually anywhere.

Throughout the ages, the religious and philosophical leaders of the Far East considered teaching the noblest occupation-- one of true wisdom and selflessness. Having had the great fortune to experience the transformative power of wonderful teachers, I've come to agree with this viewpointI've found my calling in education. I haven't always known that teaching was the vocation for me. Even though I've always taught, on some level, as a T.A., a private tutor, a classroom teacher, or a friend, I tried different jobs in the private sector for several years. However, upon much introspectionmy own enlightenmentI realized that teaching is my true calling. I have a passion for teaching, which is unmatched by any other field. Why do I teach? I teach because I know that I will learn something new from each teaching experience, with every student, with every day, without exception, and because this path is one that I know is beneficial to others and to society as a whole. As a kid, I went from tutoring family friends to, later in high school, volunteering to tutor kids with disabilities in math. Now, in college, I tutor several children ranging from elementary to early high school in subjects like English, math, science, and social studies. Through these experiences, I've discovered a profound joy in witnessing the expressions of understanding on their faces when a challenging problem finally makes sense. Their growth and learning fill me with a pride that surpasses even my academic achievements.
