...instructional planning and assessment I put forth for learners, is a natural outflow from this initial belief in helping others. It's the reason I entered teaching in the first place. Without this core belief, I would not have chosen to become a teacher. The learning process is never the same for every student. Therefore, my consistent goal is to promote transformative learning by "speaking" to each student in a language he or she can understand,...

IB Literature and Performance Tutoring FAQ
The International Baccalaureate program's literature courses require students to develop strong skills in critical thinking and literary analysis; however, this does not mean that a course cannot focus on the genres of literature that most closely align with the student%u2019s personal interests. The IB Literature and Performance course presents students who possess a passion for theater and performance, with a special opportunity to take a literature class devoted to their interests. The course and its exam assess the same critical literacy skills that are the foundation of any IB literature class, but stress reading plays and understanding how the unique nature of performance and dramatic interpretation can impact a text's meaning.
As a result, dramatic texts, poems, and performance pieces are favored over novels and nonfiction literary works in this course. Despite its specific focus, the course%u2019s requirements are no less rigorous than other IB literature courses. While only offered at the IBs standard level, the Literature and Performance course still requires students to read a variety of texts and think critically about how those texts are structured. Additionally, the IB Literature and Performance exam requires students to perform both oral and written literary analyses. While the course can act as a great springboard for the study of drama in college, it also represents a significant challenge. Even for students with histories of success in literature and drama courses, succeeding both in an IB Literature and Performance course and on its exam might require a little bit of expert help.
Varsity Tutors can help connect you with tutors who can provide custom-tailored IB Literature and Performance tutoring. Tutors are experienced educators, and many hold degrees in literature, theater, and performance studies from some of the most impressive colleges and universities in the nation. Their knowledge and experience can work to your advantage as you strive to master the material covered in your particular course and to prepare for your exams. Tutoring sessions take place in one-on-one settings, which allows you to receive immediate feedback on your work and have questions answered as soon as they occur to you. In addition, your tutor can design your lesson plans around your particular skills, strengths, weaknesses, and concerns. This customized approach can be particularly helpful in helping you master the dual performative and literary aspects of IB Literature and Performance.
If you are a natural performer, but struggle with understanding the literary analysis required throughout the course, your tutor can focus on helping you learn to pick out the aspects and details of texts most crucial from a technical viewpoint, and to explicate the meaning you derive from them. On the other hand, if you are a literature buff just beginning to study drama, your tutor can work with you on performance skills and help familiarize you with the features unique to dramatic texts. In addition, tutors work to make your IB Literature and Performance tutoring experience not only efficient, but also convenient.
The best way to take advantage of the special opportunities provided by the IB Literature and Performance curriculum is to work with a partner dedicated to helping you get the most out of the course. Recent IB Literature and Performance Tutoring Session Notes
Today we still did the separate sessions for all three students. It took one hour, and we still reviewed the content from last few classes. I am glad to see that the first student's pronunciation became increasingly good and she can apply the linguistic devices like the conjunction in different context. The second student always learned pretty fast and demonstrated great language skills. The third student was really smart and still remembers the things that are learned a long time ago. Next class, I will introduce more simple sentences and maybe conduct a story-telling activity.
The student had a great session today. He was focused and we had a lot of fun working on his workbook pages. His Chinese teacher had been out for the past week and will continue to be out this week, so he didn't have homework, but we completed four pages of his workbook so he could get ahead. He was very motivated to copy characters when we raced, with the rule that messy characters had to be erased and rewritten. He enjoyed correcting my characters and having a chance to be the teacher. He wrote his sentences in record time when I had him race against the clock, again with the rule that messy characters would have to be erased and rewritten. I was very impressed that he independently looked up words he didn't know rather than trying to ask me to do it for him.
We studied the vocabulary from the student's assignment by using his flashcards and doing the quiz on the laptop. Then, we practiced character recognition, pronunciations and meanings using physical flashcards and made sentences among them. Overall, he was doing good for this time's vocabulary revision.
Like our previous classes, we always review what we learned from last class. Today we did a long review. After it, we drew and cut out three big circles from a blank paper. We colored them in red, green and yellow. They were our traffic lights signs for the following game. The phrases we learned were "red light, green light, and yellow light". In this game, the student not only mastered the phrases but also a new tongue twister.
The student and I reviewed and drilled grammar concepts from Lesson 1 such as "also," the question format, and negation. We then went through the two lesson 2 dialogues about family and practiced questions using the "both" construction. We also modified the dialogues to fit personal facts so that he could talk about himself.
We continued to learn vocabulary and form sentences related to celebrating Spring Festival. She drew illustrations about the traditions and customs of the celebration, and we practiced writing the Chinese characters related to the lesson.
