GRE Subject Test in Chemistry Tutoring FAQ

The GRE Subject Tests are designed to test graduate school applicants' knowledge of detailed and specific concepts that they may have encountered during their undergraduate studies. The intensive nature of these exams can make them a particularly imposing part of the graduate school application process. For those students who aspire to attend graduate programs in chemistry or other areas in the physical sciences, the GRE Subject Test in Chemistry can be a huge hurdle in the admissions process.

Topics on the exam are drawn from all realms of chemistry, from basic atomic structure to complex organic reaction mechanisms, and are tested in such detail that the information a student must study can be overwhelming. Perhaps you are struggling to recall the inorganic phenomena covered in your first college chemistry lecture, or maybe you are concerned that some topics were not covered during your undergraduate career at all. No matter what your specific concerns are as you approach the exam, a skilled instructor could be the key to sorting through the wealth of knowledge you are required to master.

Online GRE Subject Test in Chemistry Tutoring review by Matthew
We began by reviewing problems from c.3 (sentence completion), c.7 (arithmetic), and c.8 (algebra). After this, we worked on the fundamental concepts for absolute values, inequalities, and percentages. I assigned all of the problems for absolute values/inequalities (c.9) and 1-40 from the chapter on percentages (c.12). Also, I instructed her to continue working on sentence completion problems (c.3) and sentence equivalent problems (c.4).

We met for our final GRE session today. In this session we focused on reviewing a variety of mathematical concepts. These included the distance formula, ratios, and working with radicals. I advised her to evaluate her strengths, weakness, and middles. I told her to focus on the middle; Concepts she understood partially, because that was where she could make the most amount of progress. I ended the session by giving her test taking advice: telling her to be confident in her answers and try to create a relaxed environment before the test. Finally, I wished her luck and departed.

The student and I went over the Writing section of the test and worked on timing. He is doing really well on the Math section, but still needs some practice on the Verbal. I recommended he keep taking practice sections before the test, but should do great!

The student did just as well on the entry exam's Quantitative section she did over the weekend as on her previous one. We discussed her comfort with the essay prompts, and then concluded with Verbal practice, with a particular focus on vocabulary. She said she felt much more confident about facing her test tomorrow.

We started by talking about the student's goals for the GRE and about how she did the first time she took the GRE and her score. I then went over some overall strategies for the GRE including study tips, using scratch paper effectively, and how to approach the test (marking questions, guessing, etc.). We then discussed specific strategies and concepts for the math section: plugging in on quantitative comparison questions, plugging in on MC questions, "must be" questions, number properties, and exponents.

The student was instructed last time to complete the Quantitative Reasoning practice questions and the essays. He has significantly improved with geometry problems. We did a variety of practice sets based on different graphs. In the process, we also established the difference between direct percents versus percent increase and decrease questions and went over the appropriate equations for each kind of problem. We concluded the session with a probability/ratio question set I created, but we did not complete it, so we will begin our session with that next time.
