Additionally, I spent three years as an associate editor for the Harvard Crimson newspaper, a position that granted me experience both writing and editing articles as well as mentoring freshman writers one-on-one....

...I began tutoring at the college grade level, which ultimately changed my teaching styles for the better. This new path started with questioning and analyzing today's academic system: "What adequately helps students to learn?", "How can I significantly impact each session in such a short amount of time?" And most importantly, "Why are some students not motivated to do well in school?" Since then I have come to trust that tutoring is not just about...

World Civilization Tutoring FAQ
You have likely taken history and civics classes over the years, and while these have done much to prepare you for a broad array of social science courses, world civilization classes can be quite foreign territory. Whether you are a high school student taking your first world cultures course or an anthropology student in college taking a specialized course in a specific topic, like comparative religious ritual and architectural expression, social science tutors are available to help you through this interesting, but exotic, set of courses. Varsity Tutors can help connect you with a tutor who is ready to help you find your way through your specific set of course requirements. With the singular goal to improve your grade and prepare you for future courses, your personal tutor will work around your schedule to make sure that your education doesn't suffer.
World civilization courses require you to step outside of the history and civic knowledge that you have accumulated thus far in your education. This does not mean that you have to accept everything that you learn, but it does mean that you need to learn how to give an unbiased, fair evaluation to ways of life and expression that are quite foreign to those with which you are most conversant and comfortable. This can often be quite difficult, for we know our own culture quite naturally and almost always judge other cultures according to the notions that we have developed in our worldviews. At times, this can be done with little distortion, for there may be a true universality to the human condition; however, human nature does not hover in an eternal Platonic heaven. Therefore, you should not be surprised if there is not a one-to-one correlation between our own notions and those that you discover in your world civilizations courses.
Varsity Tutors has educational directors who will construct a personal student profile for you that provides tutors with information on your learning style, course syllabus, goals, personality, and more. Your personal tutor uses this, along with other details, to create a plan that improves your capabilities. This is a flexible learning plan that allows you to learn at your own pace while ensuring that you develop the knowledge, mastery, and skills that you need to succeed. If you need to be given feedback or a perspective check, your tutor is prepared to introduce you to a variety of new ideas and behaviors that are beneficial to you.
World civilization tutoring can help you work through unfamiliar material, learn the histories of unfamiliar cultures, and integrate your current social studies knowledge with the topics being covered in your course. If you are taking a specialized course, let Varsity Tutors help you connect with a tutor who can help you work through the gritty details of your topic, without the pain of many wrong turns in the complex literature of your field of study. They can help you connect with a tutor who is not necessarily limited to your geographical area, allowing you to work either face-to-face online or in person at your convenience. Using online video conferencing and computer sharing technology, your tutor can reach you from some of the nation's most prestigious universities, providing you with just the targeted assistance that you need for your research. Whether you are a neophyte to the ways of world culture and civilization or an advanced student, a private tutor can help you succeed in your coursework with ease and efficiency.

Recent World Civilization Tutoring Session Notes
During this session the student wrote two papers. He first worked on a two-page summary of this week's work. The other paper was an original piece that was in rough draft form. He did some editing, added a couple extra points in his argument, and he will type that to be turned in tomorrow.
The student and I continued to go over her exam questions for her Judaic Studies course. We worked with the outline we had made the day before to create the body paragraphs of her essay. We then discussed what kind of information needs to go into introduction and concluding paragraphs, and by the end of the session she had a solid outline for these. I looked over two of her identification questions for copy editing and for content, suggesting ways that she could improve her answers. By the end of the session the student had two more identifications to answer and the first and last paragraphs of her essay to write, and the entire essay to edit.
Worked on Absolute Monarch poster project. Had to find positives and negatives about 6 monarchs during the 1500 - 1775 period. Typing at the computer while taking notes seems to help keep him engaged. Still needs some more info about the timeline aspect of the project.
Today we completed a reading comprehension practice test. He scored better than he thought he had done. He can pull up this reading score with continued attention. We worked diligently on his world history essay/presentation due in two parts next week: Heraclitus, philosopher.
The student and I worked on his homework, including a worksheet on Ancient Egypt. He had a bit of difficulty sorting out the geography of the area, so we spent a little extra time on it. We also completed his word exercises and discussed his math homework.
Today, the student and I covered the first half of his spring unit. He needs to continue to go over specific terminology listed on his study sheets, as well as dates, but the overall ideas are there. He's in a good place for his exam.
