PSAT Mathematics Tutoring FAQ
With all of the standardized testing used in contemporary secondary schooling, it might seem that the PSAT is just one more exam being foisted upon your child. Nonetheless, this exam has an important connection to the National Merit Scholarship. As part of your child's preparations, it is necessary to be certain that a thorough math review is undertaken before test day. Help provide an able guide to your child's preparation. Contact Varsity Tutors' educational directors, today to discuss the PSAT mathematics tutoring options that they can connect you to for your child's preparation.
Given the nature of standardized testing, the curriculum to be covered by the PSAT exhibits something of a one-size-fits-all nature for the mathematics section. This is to be expected, but it can make preparation a bit difficult given that no two students are cut to the exact same mold. Test preparation courses for the PSAT mathematics section will likely include many topics that are redundant for your child to study, and likewise, such courses will not likely be able to give special attention to any topics that might be particularly problematic for him or her. However, a personal tutor can provide a tailored preparation experience, creating a customized approach based on your child's particular course history and background, adjusting the mathematics concepts to be covered based on his or her strengths and weaknesses.
The overall content of the PSAT mathematics section is not difficult, covering only several major categories of mathematics topics. However, given that your child has not likely covered all of these topics recently, it is critical that he or she review those subjects that are least current in his or her memory. Your child's tutor can help to arrange this, helping your child achieve the best possible score on the PSAT mathematics section with the least amount of frustration necessary. Whether your child is currently in an advanced trigonometry course or is taking a first pre-algebra or algebra course, he or she could benefit from the directed guidance of an expert tutor and PSAT mathematics tutoring.
The PSAT math tutoring sessions are designed to be flexible and convenient. Your child is able to spend as much or as little time as he or she needs to in order to grasp each concept in full. They don't need to study the concepts they are familiar with. Your child may be given assessment tests, practice tests, and other items to make sure that they are fully prepared for the PSAT math section when the time comes. Your child's tutor can offer support on homework, class work, and test preparation. Your tutor may impart test-taking strategies and skills to make sure your child can complete the exam to their utmost potential. Furthermore, you are able to receive ongoing reports as to your child's progress, making certain that you know where his or her development is. You can arrange your child's tutoring sessions around his or her schedule to ensure they have ample time for their other commitments, such as after school activities, extracurriculars, and other classwork. You can have the tutor meet your child at your home, or another location in person such as a library or favorite cafe, or have online tutoring sessions through the Varsity Tutors live learning platform.
Given that your child may soon be preparing to take the SAT, this initial preparation can help to lay the groundwork for future success on this later, even more important aspect of your child's college application. With the potential for the accrual of so many benefits, why hesitate to find the personalized help that can help your child succeed? Contact Varsity Tutors today to find the perfect mathematics tutor, to help him or her prepare for the PSAT exam with one-on-one PSAT mathematics tutoring.

Recent PSAT Mathematics Tutoring Session Notes
We continued to learn and practice tips/techniques for answering math questions from the PSAT practice book. Assigned questions for homework and asked the student to identify the appropriate tactic to use to answer the homework questions.
We reviewed some geometry and data analysis problems that could appear of the PSAT. The student reported wanting to go over inference and reasoning for Critical Reading. We reviewed the tactics presented in the book and did some practice. We ran out of practice in the PSAT book and started practice tests in the SAT book she had.
The student has all the math skills he needs. The challenge for him is to be more meticulous and precise. He'll see a significant improvement as soon as he slows himself down and starts annotating the questions to be clear that what he's answering is what they're asking.
I didn't have a detailed score report, so I emphasized math based on what I was told in an initial e-mail, and hit several other topics to gauge her capabilities. She performed very well in the language sections. The student is also knowledgeable about a variety of math topics (special right triangles, etc.) but has some difficulty setting up some of the problems.
Today I met with the student to go over two practice tests I left with him last week. I'm happy to see that some of the concepts we are discussing are sinking in (averages, special right triangles, probability). Some of the areas like geometry and multiple multiples (ambiguous algebra expressions) are still giving him a bit of trouble. Additionally he is running out of time taking the practice tests, so we will work on strategies to move faster through the problems. Simple techniques like canceling like-terms and eliminating impossible answers will help him to move faster through each section. I left him with two practice tests to do this week and am putting together review sheets for geometry and multiple multiples (ambiguous algebra expressions).
- Meeting Thursday, 7/25.
- Went over Fractions, decimals, and percentage subsections.
- Showed problem understanding the concept that a percentage is a fraction or decimal x 100, especially when it came to representing it using variables.
