Hello! My name is Emily and I taught middle school English for three years. I have ample experience tutoring students in elementary and middle school reading and writing. I recently finished a Master's program at Columbia University in Education Policy. I am passionate about helping students meet their goals through engaging and rigorous lessons. I can't wait to meet you!

My goal for every session is that every student comes away with a better understanding of the material. I did my BS in Mathematics, and Finance and a minor in Economics. While those subjects may sound daunting, I know that any concept can be understood with right explanation.

I have been teaching 18- to 22-year-old students at the college level since 1995. I love imparting to them my own passion for the English language and its literary heritage, from Chaucer through our best 21st-century writers. I am particularly absorbed by the history of fiction, drama, and poetry in English, and I hope to continue to teach such love of the written word to curious students today.

I believe that everyone is capable of learning and growth. I can facilitate that growth by making it fun to learn using your unique interests. I am an educator at heart and a scientist by discipline. I caught the teaching bug as an Undergraduate student working as a Teacher's Assistant. The IMPACT program gave me my first opportunity to work with young students, and I loved it. I was honored by the program as an Awesome Science Mentor, leading chemistry, geography, and geology lab activities. After I received my degree I worked as an Intern at a learning center. I worked as a counselor and workshop leader for 5th-12th graders. I continued my work there as the first Sustainable Agriculture Intern for the facility, building the infrastructure for future interns. Working as an educator is something I am passionate about. Making education fun is how I am working to make the future a brighter place.

I am currently a student studying to be physician's assistant. I have tutored statistics for three years at the collegiate level, and have also tutored genetics and physiology. My main specialty is tutoring students in study skills. When I work with students I assess their strengths and the methods of learning the student feels most comfortable with. The types of learning I like to identify in individuals include but are not limited to: visual, physical, auditory, and memorization. These techniques are all study skills I have learned to master while studying for my biology major and statistics minor, and have allowed me to become successful in mentoring other students as well. In my spare time, I enjoy working and volunteering with others, multitasking, and running. My life largely revolves around working with people. I am a recent Chemistry Ph.D. graduate with a 7 month break before starting in my next role in management consulting. As the most enjoyable experiences of my career to date have been in teaching and mentoring, I am spending the intervening period tutoring!I received my Ph.D. in Chemistry from MIT, where I was a Presidential Fellow and a Dept. of Defense Graduate Fellow, and my B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Tufts University, Summa Cum Laude with Highest Thesis Honors. Over the course of my scientific research career I have produced 14 research publications, given 12 talks at international conferences, including the largest annual Physics, Chemistry, Materials, and Chemical Engineering conferences in the world, and have received 8 awards, totaling over $300k, specifically in recognition of my research accomplishments.As both an undergraduate and graduate student I have also taught, tutored, and mentored students. At MIT, I won a Graduate Teaching Award for thrice-weekly recitations of Intro Chemistry and Physical Chemistry at MIT; students consistently outperformed their peers in 5 other sections (higher average exam grades on all 4 exams and 9/12 pop quizzes, by an average margin of 5 grade points). Im currently an undergraduate bioengineering student at UIC minoring in economics and set to begin graduate work next fall. Before transferring to UIC I attended Augustana College and pursued degrees in physics and environmental studies. I hold excellent interpersonal and math skills and am good at explaining as well as doing math problems which in my opinion is somewhat of a rarity among science and math teachers. Throughout my youth I coached a swim team and have always gained an immense satisfaction from helping others. Tutoring is a win-win situation for both parties. The student becomes fluent and develops interest in a subject they have struggled with in the past and I gain from helping them improve and succeed. I like to make learning fun and strive to make the information relatable to my students. This way we can become excited about the subjects which makes learning that much easier. Mostly I am interested in tutoring math and math-related subjects including economics. Throughout sessions I will always try to convey exactly how important it is to learn the information, because like it or not, even if the student is not interested in learning, I want to convey that in life we often are forced into tasks that are not always enjoyable. Whats important is to persevere and understand that there is no other option but to complete the task or learn the material and we can only gain from giving it our best effort.
