Biochemistry Tutor • +15 Subjects

Tests are just one way to take a student’s measure. I believe in going beyond the test and teaching the subjects. With an infectious enthusiasm for science, I help students synthesize topics across different disciplines until it all makes sense. Building from a strong foundation, each of my students can then develop effective academic strategies and succeed.I am a recent Bachelor of Science from Cornell University, where my studies revolved around applying life science research to health and social studies. I have served as an undergraduate teaching assistant for several courses, and specializes in 1-on-1 tutoring for introductory biochemistry. Biochemistry is my favorite because of how many other disciplines it synthesizes. After achieving a 38 on the MCAT (99.1%), I began mentoring students on test preparation strategies. While planning to apply to medical school, I spend my time as a clinical research aide and a lead organizer for New York's Be The Match 5K Fundraiser. I also love dancing, weight lifting, and cooking.

10th Grade Reading Tutor • +32 Subjects

I attended Mamaroneck High School and graduated as a member of the National Honor Society. From there, I went to Emerson College to pursue my BFA in Writing, Literature, and Publishing where I took several intensive literature, analytical writing, creative writing, and public speaking courses. My concentration was in fiction writing and analysis. I also minored in Marketing Communications where I studied social media marketing and web analytics. At both institutions, I was able to tutor several students in English mechanics, reading comprehension, analytical writing, essay structure, and story analysis and composition. Most of my experience in tutoring has revolved around helping older students particularly 11th and 12th graders, and freshman and sophomore undergraduates, but I have also tutored 9th and 10th graders. My favorite subject to tutor is literary analysis! I love talking about stories and helping students identify themes and literary elements, and I am passionate about making sure students understand stories within the historical contexts in which they were written. As for tutoring style, I am all about understanding - both as an instructor, and as a student. I want to understand my student's abilities, struggles, and passions as best as I can, so that I can more effectively help them find themselves in their work and accomplish it to the best of their ability. My style revolves around verbal communication and problem-solving, and emphasizes these qualities in a team setting. I will work with my students in a manner that bolsters their self-confidence and academic independence as I firmly believe these are qualities that lead to a successful academic life. When I am not reading, writing, or tutoring, I enjoy baking, knitting, and drawing. I have a passion for comics and graphic novels, and I probably watch things on Netflix too often. I believe in the power of communication through art, and I love talking about it!

ACT Writing Tutor • +45 Subjects

My name is Amanda Poythress, and I've been working in the Education field for three years, now. I graduated from UCF in Orlando, Florida in December of 2013 and I've been working in schools ever since. I almost accidentally fell into education--I always thought I would use my English Lit degree to do something like editing for a publishing company (which I have done!) or writing my own novels (which I am currently working on!). I ended up substitute teaching in Florida for a few months and I found out that I was pretty good at it! There's a satisfaction that comes out of working with students, either in a large classroom setting or personally one-on-one and watching them learn new concepts or master old ones that is so satisfying.Since moving to Chicago in 2014, I've worked exclusively with three South Side Elementary schools. I have experience working with kids from Pre-K all the way up to 12th grade, but during my long-term positions, I've mainly taught Middle School division age kids (6th-8th). While I've worked in all subject fields (and a lot of Math!), my greatest passion is English and Literature. I love reading, it's probably what I spend the most time doing. I also love writing; be it fictional composition, analytical non-fiction based on books or academic essays, or personal non-fiction essays, I love all of it. I also find myself driven to help those struggling with composition or reading find if not a love, then an appreciation for the subject that can help them later on in life.My degree is in English Literature, and I've taken countless classes in genre and strategy-specific survey. I can analyze like the best of them, and it's my goal to help students do it too. In high school I took ten AP or Dual Enrollment classes between three years, so I understand the structure of the tests as well as how hard it is to juggle college course load on top of high school course load.My approach to teaching is to engage, engage, engage! I don't want to just lecture to a glassy-eyed student for an hour. That's a waste of their time as well as mine. And I understand that as a student getting tutoring, you're going above and beyond your classmates when it comes to time spent engaging with Education. That's a hard thing to concentrate on! I want to make it fun and challenging, but not hard and boring. I want you to learn, to further yourself, to become the student YOU want to be. My goal isn't to bog you down with extra work, it's to lift you up to new heights of understanding.I hope I have the opportunity to serve you, the students, and make a positive impact on this city that I've grown to love.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many students struggle with the sheer volume of content—the NCLEX tests knowledge across multiple nursing domains—combined with the unique nature of the exam itself. The test uses primarily higher-order thinking questions (analysis, application, and evaluation) rather than simple recall, which requires a different study approach than traditional exams. Students often find it challenging to:

  • Manage test anxiety and the pressure of a high-stakes exam
  • Understand how to break down complex clinical scenarios
  • Identify priority-setting and delegation concepts
  • Apply content they learned in nursing school to unfamiliar question formats

Personalized tutoring helps by targeting these specific weak areas with customized strategies rather than generic test prep.

Group courses follow a fixed curriculum that covers the same content at the same pace for everyone, which may not align with your specific knowledge gaps or learning style. Personalized tutoring adapts in real-time to your needs—if you struggle with pharmacology but excel at prioritization, your study plan adjusts accordingly.

A tutor can also teach you question-analysis strategies tailored to how you think, help you practice with actual NCLEX-style questions in the areas where you need the most work, and provide immediate feedback to correct misconceptions before they become habits. This targeted approach typically leads to faster progress and stronger confidence on test day.

The best NCLEX tutors combine three key qualities: deep nursing knowledge (usually an RN with several years of clinical experience), expertise in the NCLEX exam format and question types, and skill in teaching test-taking strategy alongside clinical concepts. They understand common misconceptions that trip up test-takers and know how to explain complex nursing principles in clear, memorable ways.

Equally important is the ability to assess your unique strengths and weaknesses quickly, adapt explanations to your learning style, and build your confidence through targeted practice. Varsity Tutors connects you with experienced tutors who specialize in NCLEX prep and know how to help you think like the test makers.

Most students benefit from starting NCLEX prep 4-12 weeks before their test date, depending on their baseline knowledge and how much time they can dedicate to studying each week. Some students need more focused help in specific areas (like pharmacology or psychiatric nursing), while others benefit from a comprehensive review of all content domains.

Personalized tutoring is efficient because you focus on areas that actually need work rather than reviewing topics you've already mastered. Many students see meaningful improvement in their question-answering accuracy within 2-4 weeks of consistent tutoring paired with self-directed practice. Your tutor can help you create a realistic timeline and study plan based on your starting point and test date.

The NCLEX rewards systematic thinking over quick answers. Key strategies include:

  • Read the full question before looking at answers—frame what you're actually being asked
  • Use the nursing process—assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation help you organize clinical thinking
  • Apply Maslow's hierarchy and priority-setting principles—know what takes priority in different scenarios
  • Eliminate obviously wrong answers first—many questions become clearer when you remove distractors
  • Look for the most comprehensive or correct answer—not just a partially correct option

A tutor helps you practice these strategies with actual NCLEX-style questions so they become automatic on test day, rather than something you have to consciously remember.

Students who use personalized tutoring alongside practice exams typically show measurable improvement in their ability to answer higher-order thinking questions correctly. Many report feeling significantly more confident in their clinical reasoning and test-taking approach after just a few weeks of focused work with a tutor.

While individual outcomes vary, the goal is to move from inconsistent performance across content areas to strong, reliable performance across all NCLEX domains. Most importantly, tutoring helps you identify and close specific knowledge or strategy gaps before test day, so you can approach the exam with genuine confidence rather than anxiety.

Students most often seek tutoring help with pharmacology (due to the sheer volume of drug information), safe and effective care environment (including infection control and safety protocols), physiological adaptation (complex medical conditions and complications), and psychosocial integrity. Many also struggle with prioritization and delegation questions that span multiple content areas.

The advantage of personalized tutoring is that you can focus intensively on your specific challenge areas rather than spending time on content you already understand well. A tutor can help you build memory systems for pharmacology, master delegation principles, or develop clinical reasoning skills in whichever area you need most.
