Xilin started learning chess in high school and soon become passionate to the world of 64 squares. He then helped his high school team to win the team 1st place trophy in a scholastic tournament. I am currently a sophomore pursuing a bachelor of arts degree in Medicine, Health, and Society. Being a student, Ive understood the frustration of not knowing what to do or who to turn to in the moment I dont understand something. This feeling can be very disheartening, but having the right person to guide you can make all the difference. For struggling students, I want to be that person to help them reach their full potential. In high school, I tutored people (mostly high school students like myself at the time) within the community, and it was personally rewarding every time I saw a student gain confidence in their studies.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Northeastern University and a Master's degree in Social Work from Boston University. I have tutored on Varsity Tutors since 2021 in subjects including math, science, writing, ESL, and Mandarin. I am currently a second year medical student. I was a Physiological Sciences major at UCLA (class of 2015), and pursued research during my gap year between undergrad and medical school.

I am a graduate of Harvard Graduate School of Education (3.95 GPA) and New York University (3.98 GPA). I have worked with students of all ages. I love adapting my teaching style to the individual needs of each student to help them fulfill their greatest potentials.

I got my undergraduate degree in political science in Nanjing University in China and psychology in Georgia Institute of Technology, master's degree in International Affairs in Georgia Institute of Technology. I have been tutoring K12 students math and language arts and GRE test preparation for 7 years. My favorite subject is the GRE test prep and Mandarin Chinese. My tutoring is based on student capabilities and tailored to their age differences. I like to read and listen to audio books, I love young children of different ages. Cooking and baking is my another hobby. Sometimes I enjoy to cook together with my children, or play video games like Minecraft with them. I love music of a large variety of genres, playing piano to relax myself. My class is usually filled with fun games with children and occasionally even their siblings join us to practice speaking Chinese, English or Russian.

I graduated from Oberlin College in May 2019 with majors in mathematics and East Asian Studies. While I was a student, I worked in a drop-in tutoring center, helping my classmates with math and chemistry. During my junior year, I tutored a high school junior in algebra, and I am currently tutoring a middle school student in Mandarin. Tutoring is something I genuinely enjoy. I like helping people. I empathize with my tutees because I know what it is like to struggle with a new concept; I know what it is like to not understand something you feel you should understand. These are difficult experiences with which I am personally familiar. Thus, my main motivation for wanting to be a tutor is to help people overcome these difficulties and feel good about themselves in the process. An added bonus is the reward of better understanding the material I am teaching. Given that I have experience tutoring both math and Chinese, these are the subjects I am most comfortable teaching, specifically middle school and high school level math and beginning to intermediate Mandarin. That being said, I would be uncomfortable tutoring an absolute beginner in Mandarin because I believe pinyin and tones are best taught by a native Chinese speaker. In addition to math and Chinese, I would enjoy tutoring writing and English. Outside of academics, I have a number of hobbies. I love doing ceramics and have been taking classes since I was eight years old. I mostly do hand-building and have gone through a number of phases. When I was very young, most of the ceramic sculptures I made were dragons because I was obsessed with them. When I first began studying Chinese in high school, I made ceramic tiles with Chinese characters on them. Most recently, I have been making ceramic lotuses and sunflowers. Origami is another craft I enjoy. It is a fun, relaxing, and portable activity as folding paper can be done virtually anywhere.

No subject, no test, and no question is bigger than you. By the end of our time together, I hope to make you see that my only job was really just to make you see--you really had it in you, all along. If there's any subject in which you truly believe you suck--that you're just the worst, and that nothing will ever help you improve--then don't you dare give up until you've given me a call! I'm a writer, but I love numbers, and nothing makes me more proud than helping students overcome their biggest challenges. I've scored near-perfect on both standardized tests, and I've been helping students understand how to improve their own scores ever since. I'm also capable of tutoring advanced Music Theory topics, as well as Spanish and Mandarin Chinese

As the eldest sibling in my family, I naturally grew into the role of helping my younger sister and her friends with their homework. Before long, my parents suggested that since I was already helping her, why not assist some of their friends as well? And just like that, my teaching journey began. As a kid, I went from tutoring family friends to, later in high school, volunteering to tutor kids with disabilities in math. Now, in college, I tutor several children ranging from elementary to early high school in subjects like English, math, science, and social studies. Through these experiences, I've discovered a profound joy in witnessing the expressions of understanding on their faces when a challenging problem finally makes sense. Their growth and learning fill me with a pride that surpasses even my academic achievements. I've come to realize that teaching is more than just sharing knowledgeit's about nurturing confidence and curiosity in others. My goal is to help as many kids as possible, teaching them not just concepts but also how to believe in their abilities and embrace growth.
