I am a recent college graduate currently pursuing a career in publishing in New York City. My interest in tutoring and the publishing industry stem from the same source: I want to help instill in others the same love of learning I have felt throughout my life. Whether it's getting lost in a good book or feeling the thrill of excitement at finally solving a difficult math problem, I feel that learning should be fun and viewed as a challenge, not a chore. Throughout my academic career, I have been a well-rounded student, excelling in math as well as language and literature. I am a notoriously good test-taker, a skill developed from solid study habits that I hope to pass on to future students. For me, tutoring is my way of giving back to my community and paying forward the help I've gotten from teachers, mentors, and fellow students throughout my life.

I'm a Math and French major at Brown University, and I've been tutoring for over three years. I have worked with young kids taking elementary-level math, middle school students taking Pre-Algebra and Algebra, high school students taking Pre-Calculus and Calculus, college students taking Calculus I/II and Linear Algebra -- and any level in between! Tutoring is one of my favorite activities, because every student I work with teaches me something new about my field. In addition to doing math and writing French poetry, I play the piano, contract bridge, soccer and tennis. I am also a passionate vegan, and hope to one day combine math and language into a field that draws on both the sciences and the humanities. Hobbies: reading, music, writing, art, books

I am currently a PhD candidate at Northwestern University, studying microbiology and public health (my two biggest passions). I received my Bachelor of Science with high honors from Emory University in 2011, where I double-majored in Biology and Spanish. During my time at Emory, I studied abroad in Australia working on barrier reef and rainforest ecology, and studied in Spain mastering my Spanish language skills. I can read and write Spanish with high proficiency and have tutored Spanish speakers, and received highest scores on the AP Spanish exam with listening. My favorite academic subjects are math and science, and I have received perfect scores on a variety of standardized math exams, including SAT I math, SAT II math IIC subject test, BC calculus AP exam, and the GRE quantitative exam. In addition to tutoring mathematics at all levels, I enjoy tutoring grammar and mechanics, and editing essays. I received the Carlos C. Rojas Excellence in Writing Award from Emory University, and have served on the editorial board for Emory University's undergraduate research journal, as well as have authored peer-reviewed manuscripts at Northwestern University. I have lectured to undergraduate students at Northwestern University in cell biology, and have taught English as a Second Language (ESL) in both a classroom setting and one-on-one. I have a very diverse background of knowledge and have worked in a variety of settings, both academic and in industry, and can meet any of your tutoring needs. I am a very patient person with excellent communication and listening skills who will take the time to get to know each of my tutees. After identifying and recognizing a tutee's own strengths and weaknesses, I can tailor a unique tutoring plan to help each student exceed his or her goals. Hobbies: writing, hiking, reading, cooking, traveling, music, art, travel, books

I am firmly of the belief that learning a technical subject like chemistry, physics, or math is much like learning a foreign language: listening and reading is much easier than speaking and writing. It is all too easy to fall into the trap of believing that if you come to class and understand what the instructor is saying, you don't need to practice the material. Accordingly, I emphasize the need to practice "speaking" the language on a regular basis and to receive immediate feedback on one's learning. In my free time I enjoy woodworking and playing with Legos with my small children.

I am currently a M. Eng. mechanical engineering graduate student at the University of California Berkeley. I completed my undergraduate degree the University of Illinois at Chicago, majoring in bioengineering. I have been tutoring other students since high school and also have experience teaching engineering in a classroom setting. Frequently Asked Questions
10th grade math requires a shift from procedural skills to deeper conceptual understanding. Common challenges include:
- Multi-step equations and systems: Students need to track multiple operations while maintaining algebraic logic
- Word problems: Translating real-world scenarios into mathematical models requires both reading comprehension and problem-solving skills
- Graphing and coordinate geometry: Visualizing abstract concepts on a coordinate plane can feel disconnected from equations
- Geometric proofs: Writing logical, step-by-step justifications is fundamentally different from calculation-based math
- Connecting concepts: Understanding how algebra, geometry, and functions relate to each other
Personalized tutoring helps students slow down, build confidence, and see the 'why' behind each concept rather than just the 'how.'
The jump to 10th grade often feels like the first time students truly need to understand math rather than just follow steps. Tutors help by asking questions that guide students to discover patterns themselves, showing multiple ways to solve the same problem, and connecting abstract concepts to real situations. Instead of simply showing the answer, expert tutors ask 'Why does this step work?' and 'What happens if we change this number?'—questions that build deeper mathematical thinking. When students understand the reasoning behind a formula or procedure, they retain it longer and can apply it to new, unfamiliar problems.
The best tutors for 10th grade math combine subject expertise with strong communication skills. Look for someone who:
- Can explain concepts in multiple ways—not everyone thinks about algebra or geometry the same way
- Asks guiding questions rather than just giving answers, helping students develop problem-solving strategies
- Understands common misconceptions and addresses them directly
- Is familiar with different curriculum approaches (like different textbook series or standards)
- Builds mathematical confidence alongside skill development, especially if your student experiences math anxiety
- Shows students how to organize their work and communicate mathematical reasoning clearly
Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who specialize in 10th grade math and can tailor their approach to your student's learning style.
Word problems require students to do two things simultaneously: understand the English (or the scenario described) and translate it into mathematical language. Many 10th graders can solve equations perfectly but freeze when those same equations appear in context. The challenge isn't usually the math itself—it's identifying what information matters, deciding which operation to use, and knowing when the answer makes sense in the real world. Tutors help by breaking down the process: reading for understanding, identifying what's being asked, organizing information (often with diagrams or tables), setting up the equation, solving, and then checking if the answer is reasonable. With practice and guided strategies, word problems shift from scary to manageable.
Improvement timelines vary depending on the specific challenge and frequency of tutoring. Many students report increased confidence and better understanding within 2-3 weeks of consistent tutoring. For deeper shifts—like moving from barely passing to strong grades, or from relying on memorization to genuine understanding—most students see meaningful progress within 4-8 weeks of regular sessions. More frequent sessions (2-3 times per week) typically show faster progress than once-weekly tutoring. The key is consistency and building on concepts week to week. Your tutor will help you set realistic goals and monitor progress so you know whether the frequency or approach is working for your student.
Absolutely. Math anxiety often stems from a history of confusion, negative experiences, or feeling rushed to get answers. Personalized tutoring creates a low-pressure environment where students can ask 'silly' questions, take time to think, and build confidence gradually. When a student understands something for the first time with a patient tutor, it shifts their entire relationship with the subject. Small wins—mastering a technique, solving a problem independently, getting a better grade on a test—build momentum and confidence. Expert tutors recognize math anxiety and deliberately create space for students to rebuild their relationship with math. Many students discover they don't dislike math at all; they just needed someone to slow down and explain it in a way that made sense to them.
10th grade math curricula can vary—some schools emphasize geometry-first, others lead with algebra; some use integrated approaches, others teach subjects separately. Experienced tutors are familiar with major textbook series and curriculum frameworks, and they're skilled at translating between them. More importantly, they understand the core concepts underneath different approaches. A tutor might notice your student is confused because their textbook uses different terminology or a different method than what you learned—and can bridge that gap. When you connect with a tutor through Varsity Tutors, it helps to share which textbook or curriculum your student's school uses, so your tutor can align with what's happening in class while building deeper understanding of the underlying math.
