Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was a introductory session. I found out that I was tutoring twins. We were reviewing a final exam list that the mother had given us. I worked through the review sheet with them, having them answer questions and letting me know if they were stuck. I am pleased to say that they were enthusiastic about learning the math."
"We went over lessons from her workbook on proportions, shapes, and fractions/variables. She grasped the material really well, but I asked her to complete the associated practice problems with each lesson and tell me if she has any questions on any of the problems. I had also prepared a worksheet for her to complete in regards to her performance on the practice test. We will be meeting on Thursday to cover more lessons from her workbook and reviewing anything she was having difficulties with."
"We reviewed quadratic functions for an upcoming test by completing a practice assessment. She was having problems with completing the square and squaring negative numbers. After explaining the process and providing her with some new strategies for each concept, she indicated that she was more confident in her knowledge and that she was sure she would do well in the test."
"The student and I began his new unit today: functions containing radicals. We worked through problems that required us to add, subtract, and multiply radicals. All of the radicals were square root functions, and none of them contained perfect squares. Some of the problems involved numbers and variables. The big win of the session was relating this process to factoring of quadratics, and once he realized that all we were really doing was factoring, he had no problems. The student said that he had taken his test over probability and that he felt pretty good about it, however, he did not have the grade back yet. I left him with about 40 problems to work on, and plenty of worked examples to reference in case he gets stuck."
"The student and I went over review problems that covered solving systems of equations and factoring trinomials. He needed to be reminded of the methods (elimination/substitution/graphing) for solving the systems of equations, and he also needed to be reminded of the procedure for factoring trinomials."
"I have explained to the student the "Pythagorean Theorem" section and helped her practice some problems. Then she practiced additional problems that were given as home work. After that, I reviewed the section 9.8, which is related to solving equations using substitution and elimination."
