I am more passionate about the latter, and within the humanities I am most passionate about philosophy and English. The most important thing I've learned from those two fields (and the thing I'd most want to pass on to students) is how to find the right words for thoughts - this is important, not ju...

I believe the key to education is to promote the underlying understanding of the concepts. Once a topic is understood, the application of the numbers comes easily. People don't really hate math; they hate feeling uncomfortable with it.

I am a third-year medical student from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. I currently live in the greater NYC area while I complete my clinical rotations. I am originally from Pawling, NY. I moved to Naples, FL during high school and graduated from Barron Collier High School in 2005. From there, I obtained a bachelors degree in Health Science from Northeastern University in Boston, MA. While pursuing my bachelor's degree, I worked as a part-time tutor for my student-athlete classmates, teaching a range of topics including Biology, Chemistry, and Calculus. Additionally, for my senior thesis project, I developed and taught a comprehensive sexual education class for local high school students and college freshman. During my first year at University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, I volunteered as a mentor to a local middle school student, helping him with his classwork as needed.I found both teaching opportunities to be extremely fulfilling. It is very rewarding to see the individual growth of people as they learn the process necessary to be a successful student. I look forward to sharing my study skill knowledge with other aspiring students.

Hello! My name is Sara, and I am a graduate of American University with a B.S in Biology. I will begin my program where I will receive my Masters in Medical Science at Boston University Medical School in the fall. I am originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where I began tutoring lower and middle schoolers in English, Maths and Science, and organizational and study techniques. In college, I worked as a supplemental instructor (SI). I held weekly review sessions outside of class and helped students prepare for tests, quizzes, labs, and pending homework assignments. I also worked with students in the local high school and college to develop personal statement ideas, how to write personal statements, and edit them.I love to use different strategies to help convey information and enjoy explaining topics in many different ways until something clicks. Working with students on educational topics is extremely important and crucial to understanding material. Still, I also think introducing new and upcoming study techniques can help make studying more fun and even easier to do! I believe learning should be engaging, fun and leave the student with new confidence in the material. I am excited and hope to show you when we work together how to bring joy to learning.

It's not that you cannot master the subject - you just haven't had a session with me! As a successful tutor of 31 GED recipients and many other students at all levels, I love proving to people that they are in fact capable of mastering any subject.I am an honors graduate of the University of Michigan, which I followed with extensive international travel and independent studies in many areas. It is my goal to engage the student with tutoring support that does not assume any competency. Sometimes students lose interest because they cannot see the real-life relevance of some subjects; I make tutoring enjoyable because I can connect it with real life importance. In addition to tutoring, I love running, biking, travel, Dilbert comics, movies, sports, books, weight training, Spanish and food (maybe I love food too much!).One session will convince you that your life as an academic star begins with me!

I am a sophomore/junior at Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University. My inspiration to become a Mechanical Engineer came from when my 6th grade teacher gave me a solar-powered fan. I'll never forget how the blades started rotating on their own as soon as the sun light hit the solar panels. It was as though the blades turned with magic. Exploring how the solar-powered fan functioned opened the world to renewable energy. But, ultimately what turned interest to desire for the field was when I took a trip to Honduras at the age of 21 and experienced being deprived of water and electricity. Realizing that these were the conditions not only the people in this country lived in, but millions more around the world, was unacceptable to me and a desire burned within me to change that. My personal goal is to use my degree and interpersonal skills to start a non-profit one day that will help solve this deficit as it is my deep belief that everyone should have access to clean water and electricity.Although I discovered my educational interest early in life my journey to becoming an engineer has been a long and complicated one. Growing up in Lincoln Heights, a Latino community in Los Angeles, California, in the 90s, in a single mom household was an economic challenge. My mother came to this country to escape El Salvador's Guerilla Warfare that killed all the men in her family. She spoke no English when she arrived in this country. Her language barrier only allowed her to obtain a job as a seamstress, where she earned cents for every piece she sewed together. Though she earned very little, she provided all she could for me and took on the role of a father and mother figure. That being said we lived on a budget, but I was grateful as we always had food to eat and a place to live.In 2010, my mother had a work accident that left her disabled and unable to work. Although I had always worked to help my mother financially, this was a huge hit to our income. The disability checks she received were not at all enough to sustain us, so I became a full-time worker and became the head of household at age 20. Adjusting to this took some time, and I had to stop going to school. I eventually returned to school at age 23, as a part-time student at a local community college, as I continued to work full-time. This by far challenged me in many ways and nearly broke me, as I was always tired, making it very difficult to concentrate and learn in class and even more tough when studying alone. What allowed me to push forward during these hard times was remembering how hard my mom had worked for us and my desire to make a positive change in the world. Thankfully, at age 26, I was hired as a part-time busser by a local fine-dining restaurant company. This job allowed me to work less hours and transition to become a full-time student since the tips I earned plus my hourly supplemented the extra income I needed to continue supporting my mom and me.With great efforts, at age 28, I was able to transfer successfully from community college to ASU. It has been a nine-year educational journey to become a mechanical engineer, but I am more determined than ever. I aim to make my mother proud and build on the progress she has done, as I know that my fulfillment is also hers and therefore lives through me. I want to give back to community by becoming a mentor. I want my story to inspire girls and boys by showing them that we are not a product of our circumstances, but of our decisions, will, and actions. I do this because in order to make a difference on a larger scale and be on the front lines to make decisions that will help millions of people worldwide I know that I cannot do it alone. I must build a team that will help me accomplish these goals, and what better than those that share a similar story.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students across Tucson's 427 schools and all 67 school districts with personalized tutoring. Whether your student attends a school in the Tucson Unified School District, Sunnyside, Sahuarita, or any other local district, we can match them with a tutor who understands Arizona's academic standards and local curriculum expectations.
Tucson's average student-teacher ratio of 15.2:1 means individual students often don't get the focused attention they need in the classroom. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction fills that gap by providing dedicated support tailored to your student's specific learning style, pace, and goals—something that's difficult to achieve in a traditional classroom setting.
Tucson students commonly seek tutoring in math, English, science, and test preparation (SAT, ACT, and AP exams). We also work with students on Arizona-specific requirements like passing the AIMS exam and meeting state standards. Whatever subject your student is struggling with or wants to excel in, Varsity Tutors can connect you with an expert tutor.
Tutors who work with Tucson students are familiar with Arizona's K-12 standards and graduation requirements, including proficiency expectations in English language arts, math, science, and social studies. They can help students close specific skill gaps, prepare for state assessments, and build confidence in areas where they're falling behind—ensuring they're on track to meet Arizona's benchmarks.
The first session is focused on getting to know your student—their learning style, current challenges, and goals. The tutor will assess where they stand academically, identify specific areas that need support, and create a personalized plan moving forward. This foundation helps ensure that every future session is targeted and effective.
Tutoring rates vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and your student's grade level. We offer flexible options to fit different budgets, and many families find that the focused, personalized instruction delivers strong results that justify the investment. Contact us for a consultation to discuss pricing and find a tutoring plan that works for your family.
Many students show noticeable improvement within 4-6 weeks of consistent tutoring, though the timeline depends on their starting point and how frequently they work with their tutor. Building strong academic skills is a process, and the most sustainable results come from regular, focused practice. Your tutor will track progress and adjust strategies to keep your student moving forward.
Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who have strong subject expertise and experience teaching or tutoring their area. Many hold degrees in their subject, have classroom teaching experience, or bring specialized knowledge—like test prep certification or advanced subject mastery. When we match your student with a tutor, we ensure they're well-qualified to help your student succeed.
