After practicing environmental law for 27 years, I decided to change careers. I chose teaching because that is something that has always interested me, and chose social studies because my BA is in history and history has been a lifelong passion. I have a background in law, government and public policy as well, having been a practicing environmental lawyer and having earned a Master of Public Administration degree. As a Scout leader for 25 years, I was very much involved in teaching at all education levels, all the way up to graduate school.Raising my own four children also involved a great deal of teaching. As a lawyer, I enjoyed most working with younger lawyers and helping them become better researchers and writers, and with high school and undergraduate students considering a law-related career. The common thread in these experiences is working with young people one-on-one or in small groups. For these reasons, I believe tutoring plays to my strengths as a teacher. When I was in the classroom, my assessments always used actual AP questions. My students performed very well on their final exams, which were full-length AP tests using questions from past exams, averaging. In world history, I wrote my own test questions, since test banks accompanying the text involved little more than memorization. I try to inject more rigor into my lessons and assessments.I never go into a professional activity with a client without a great deal of preparation. In my economics and government classes, I prepared detailed study guides both to prepare myself and to assist students. I believe my students' performance in AP classes was directly related to these guides. As a tutor, in my first meeting with a student, I will assess the nature of their concerns with the subject. I will review with them the syllabus and their recent exams and assignments to identify the key problems. Problems might include study habits, difficulty with key concepts, and absorbing the sheer volume of material, among other things. Having identified the problems, I will tailor tutoring sessions to the individual student's needs. For example, lessons may concentrate on practice with difficult concepts Many students are visual or kinetic learners, so the use of graphs in economics is especially useful to get to the solution, and to build on basic concepts, even when answering multiple choice questions. I discovered the joy of teaching and helping others when I was in school and working with classmates on the same material. I've found that the material is only part of the learning process. Attending the same classes allowed me to understand the classroom context and help classmates navigate confusing lessons as well as homework and exams. I have successfully taken on this role from elementary to graduate school. Most of the time I did not have an official position as a tutor, but I greatly enjoyed being in an optimal position to set up others for success.I most enjoy math, probability, and statistics because they give you tools that allow you to solve technical problems all by yourself. For example, I build a tool in Excel to give me the odds that I would get a desired card from a card pool in the online card game called Hearthstone. I graduated Michigan State with a bachelor's in statistics and a Master's in Business Analytics to learn how to apply statistics to real world problems.I have had almost all A's throughout my entire academic career. I attribute my success to more than natural ability. I've found that being willing to ask questions to classmates and teachers, putting more time and effort into subjects and lessons that are most challenging, treating each class/teacher as a separate challenge, and breaking down processes are all incredibly important. I think of a new class as a separate game that needs to be understood and respected. Having this flexibility will enable you to take the key steps that will optimize your performance.When I consider artistic performance such as my piano playing and dancing, I see how breaking it down is helpful in a similar way. I have to spend most of the time working on the hard parts and then integrating them into the rest of the piece. In school, the performance could be solving an algebraic equation. There could be an element like factoring that is hard and open ended. Putting the most time and effort into factoring and then successfully working through the whole problem is just like perfect practice leading to a flawless performance.

As a current medical student with years of high-level coursework in various subjects under my belt, I have learned to adapt and change my learning style multiple times throughout high school, college, and medical school. As a soon-to-be doctor, one of the most important things I can do with my patients is to listen to them, their needs, and where they are coming from. This ability to listen is crucial also for tutoring and understanding a child's academic needs. In working with patients, I also regularly break down tough scientific concepts into every-day language that they can relate to. This is another very important skill to have when working with students who may be struggling to understand difficult technical concepts. I am confident that my years of academic experience will serve well in helping your child succeed in any subject area they may need help in.
