Today we reviewed several concepts that were tested on the PSAT. For instance, we talked about verbs and how they are tested. We discussed the different errors that can be found with verbs on the PSAT, such as verb agreement, verb parallelism, and verb tense. I explained to the student the significance of understanding these concepts. After giving him a few practice questions I was reassured that he understood. Next we looked at pronouns, nouns, idioms, comparison, and modifiers. We talked about how each component is tested on the exam. We examined several practice problems regarding these concepts. He answered these questions well. I challenged him to tell me why he chose his answers. He had slight difficulties explaining to me why he chose his answer. So we discussed different reasons why the other answers were incorrect and talked about his thought process to arrive at the right answer.

Both students had written their fables and a short persuasive piece on why someone should read their chosen book. Both boys had written fun, good stories, but the first student's was more detailed and sophisticated. I also had them write a little about their trip to Mexico.

In today's session, we began by going over the essay that the student had written over the weekend on the book "Holes." She finished the book and completed a writing assignment, in which she continued the story by explaining what happened to all of the main characters. We discussed how she could work on it further by focusing on one particular character and being more specific within a broad topic. Then, we moved into a warm-up writing exercise. I gave her a series of guiding points to write about, and at the end, she had constructed a fable. I also wrote at the same time, and we shared both of our pieces with each other. From there, we switched gears a bit to focus more on analytical writing. We came up with different examples of arguments and counterarguments. I think this is something that she struggles with, not because she is not a good writer, but because students are not typically exposed to this type of analytical writing until high school. I will focus more on this next week to make sure she has a foundational understanding of what teachers will generally be expecting from her this upcoming year.
