Upon graduation from New York University (Philosophy), I taught the verbal section of the MCAT to prospective medical students in my home state of Virginia, after which I moved to New Orleans to teach Middle School Math and Science in low-income communities as an AmeriCorps member. I now tutor a broad range of subjects, specializing in standardized admissions tests through graduate levels. I am a firm proponent of education and its role in a fulfilling life. I try to impart this perspective to all of my students. Let's get to work!

My life's work has been and continues to be assisting students in building confidence while exploring the wonders of language and mathematics. Whether it be Algebra, ACT preparation, or English for non-native speakers, I have enjoyed my 20+ years working with students both in the U.S. and abroad (China & India). I have tutored students as young as Pre-K, but most of my experience lies with high school, university & adult students. For those seeking assistance with the ACT, I have several years of experience tutoring all subjects - content & strategies. With the changes in the ACT last year (science optional, shorter subject tests with differing times), I decided to take the new Enhanced ACT with hundreds of high school students to gain first-hand experience with how the alterations might affect test strategy and gauge any changes in content. My split focus affected the science score most (:D), but I look forward to sharing my newly gained insights with my students.

Hello! I recently graduated with a BA in Liberal Arts from Sarah Lawrence College. I have a passion for reading, writing, and film and I am currently taking an online graduate course in TV writing with UCLA. The subjects I tutor in include essay editing, writing, and reading comprehension (i.e. anything pertaining to writing and english.) My tutoring style is collaboration based and tailored to each student's individual learning style. I have first hand experience with how frustrating it can be to get lost in a classroom and feel like you're falling behind, because you don't learn or retain information the same way as your peers, so I find it's the most beneficial to understand each student's relationship with the subject material and developing a plan from there, opposed to instilling a generalized "one size fits all" agenda.

I received my B.S. in Biology from Rhodes College, my M.S. in Biology from Alabama in Birmingham, and a PhD in Anatomy and Physiology from Duke University. My teaching over the last few years has focused on Histology (MicroAnatomy) and Physiology. Teaching modern histology and physiology requires a strong understanding of cell and molecular biology, and I incorporate these areas into my current teaching. I have also taught Genetics, Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, and Introductory Biology. During my 25 years at the University of Puget Sound, I continually served on our Health Professions Advising Committee, and was chair of this committee for three years. We advised students in all aspects of their applications for professional schools in diverse areas of health care professions, such as medical and dental school, among other professional health-related graduate programs. As chair of the committee I was solely responsible for writing committee letters for all of our students who applied through our committee. As a science educator, I serve my students, and do my utmost to provide them with a modern education in biology. I sincerely love teaching, which for me includes preparation through literature research, and organization and delivery of the best information. I enjoy all aspects of teaching, but most especially the reward of seeing my students learn, and secondarily, my learning of my field and pedagogy, through my efforts as a teacher.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students from across Monroe's 41 schools and both school districts with personalized tutoring. Whether your student attends a school in the Morehouse Parish or Ouachita Parish district, we match them with tutors who understand Louisiana's academic standards and can support their specific curriculum needs.

Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who are familiar with Louisiana's K-12 academic standards and state assessments. Whether your student is preparing for LEAP testing, working toward grade-level benchmarks, or strengthening foundational skills, personalized 1-on-1 instruction helps address individual learning gaps that classroom settings with higher student-teacher ratios may not always catch.

Monroe students commonly seek tutoring in math, reading, and science—subjects that build foundational skills for academic success. We also see strong demand for test prep (SAT, ACT, and state assessments), writing support, and subject-specific help in algebra, geometry, and English language arts as students progress through middle and high school.

Your student's first session is an opportunity for the tutor to understand their learning style, identify specific challenges, and build rapport. The tutor will assess where your student stands academically, discuss goals, and create a personalized plan that fits their needs—whether that's catching up on missed concepts, preparing for an upcoming test, or building confidence in a challenging subject.

With an average student-teacher ratio of 17.4:1 in Monroe schools, classroom teachers often have limited time for individualized attention. Personalized 1-on-1 tutoring fills that gap by providing focused instruction tailored to your student's pace and learning style, helping them master concepts that may get rushed in a larger classroom setting.

Varsity Tutors connects students with expert tutors who have strong subject knowledge and experience supporting K-12 learners. Tutors understand Louisiana's curriculum standards and work with students across Monroe's schools. Each tutor is selected based on their ability to teach effectively and adapt to individual student needs.

Tutoring costs vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions you choose. We offer flexible scheduling and pricing options to fit different budgets. Contact us to discuss your student's needs and get a personalized quote that works for your family.

Getting started is simple—reach out to tell us about your student's needs, grade level, and goals. We'll match them with a tutor who's a great fit and schedule your first session. Most families see tutoring as a flexible resource they can adjust based on their student's progress and changing needs throughout the school year.
