Anyone can learn mathematics, but it is easy for students to get overwhelmed. Far too often, I hear people say "I hate math", convinced that they are bad at it. But what I've often found is that students simply need another way of viewing the problems. Sometimes, the student needs help breaking down...

I began my tutoring career seven years ago while a Freshman at Georgetown University, where I majored in Spanish and Sociology. I initially tutored English (Grammar & Mechanics) assisted with drafting essays and lengthier papers for a variety of subjects, and helped my students to enhance their study skills.Tutoring soon became something I greatly enjoyed. I loved watching my students progress in their studies as they began to genuinely enjoy the learning process! Later in my career, I added Spanish as a subject that I tutored. I tutored students at the college level in Beginners and Intermediate Spanish.I was so happy to add Spanish to my repertoire of tutoring subjects because it is a personal favorite. Learning Spanish is fun and exciting! It has been an integral part of my life since when I first began learning it at the age of 14. However, I rapidly learned because I immersed myself in Spanish music, television, and culture. I also traveled to the Dominican Republic in the Fall of 2011 for a semester of study abroad.Since graduating with my Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from Georgetown University, I have continued to immerse myself in the Spanish language and use it as much as possible. Besides my interest in tutoring, I am also an avid singer. I have studied voice for about ten years now. I have sang at weddings and like to record professionally in my spare time.

Learning has been a constant part of my life. Ever since I was a little kid, I have enjoyed finding out new things about the world through books, videos, conversations, and experiences. As I have gotten older, my love of learning has grown to include a love of teaching..As a teacher, I have experience working with students from kindergarten to undergraduate, in subjects as diverse as STEM, the humanities, outdoor skills, climbing, and barista craft. While teaching, I try to meet my students where they are at, then get them to where they need to be by empathetically adapting to their learning styles while maintaining high expectations,

I graduated from UC Davis with a BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with a minor in Psychology. I plan to continue school and pursue a master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies. I have taught at many tutoring facilities including Chadbourne Elementary School and Hopkin's Junior High School in Fremont, UC Davis, and Yocha Dehe Wintun Academy. Many of the tutees I have taught range from elementary students to undergraduates. I am competent in basic arithmetic, algebra, trigonometry, biology, and chemistry, but my favorite subject would have to be chemistry because I believe it is extremely relevant in many fields. My tutoring techniques are very versatile due to my experience from teaching in a classroom setting and private tutoring. In the classroom, my goal is to thoroughly cover the basics by drilling my tutees with lots of practice problems. I also try to facilitate group work, in order to stimulate critical thinking. In a private setting, my goal is to learn about my tutee's studying habits and weaknesses, so that I my design a regimen that ensure his or her success in the class. I try to impart to all my tutees about how important practice is when learning something new. Practice and repetition allows an individual to not only minimize mistakes, but it also gives them new insight on certain problems and on how a certain method can be applied to a different situation.Outside of academia, I have a wide range of hobbies. I like to play badminton competitively and hike though mountain trails. Instead of video games, I opt for playing board games with my friends; my favorites would be Settler's of Catan and Carcassonne. I also like to build and detail Gundam plastic models and have even founded a plastic model club in Davis to teach my techniques to others who were interested in the hobby. But what I love most is to learn new things every day. I would study scientific articles and read how scientists are finding new ways to treat certain diseases such as Alzheimer's and Schizophrenia, which I find very interesting.

10th Grade Math Tutor • +52 Subjects

I graduated on December 2015 from the University of Tasmania - located in Australia - with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. I am now living in Houston enjoying Texas hospitality and hope to give back by passing on some knowledge of my own.I enjoy helping others do well in their studies. From high school through to university, I would often spend time with classmates and friends helping them with their homework (particularly math homework). During the last two years of my engineering degree, I was working as a Teaching Assistant (TA) running regular tutorials and lab sessions for first year classes of up to 70 students at a time. Despite this, I still prefer tutoring students one-on-one because from my experience this obtains the best academic results. The subjects I tutor are specifically math related, as that is my strongest field. It can range from basic Grade 4 math through to Calculus 1, including standardized test preparation. My favorite subjects to tutor are Algebra 1 & 2, pre-Calculus, and Calculus 1, because it's great to see students realize these subjects are not as hard as common perceptions make them out to be. Nothing beats having a student tell you that a subject they were previously struggling with is now a walk in the park!My hobbies include hiking, camping, table tennis, reading fiction novels, playing guitar, chess, and video games.

I know how it feels to struggle with a course and not be able to find someone to help you out, and I know how much of a difference a that help can make. I have a B.S. in Physics from Sam Houston State, and will be starting my Master's in Biotechnology at Texas A&M in fall 2018. I specialize in tutoring math and physics, both because they're my personal favorite subjects, and because I know many people struggle with those subjects. I believe that mastery of any subject is attainable and that it's just a matter of finding the right approach for each student.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students from across Lafayette's 38 schools and 5 school districts with personalized 1-on-1 instruction. Whether your student attends a school in the Lafayette Parish School System, Acadian Charter Schools, or another local district, we can match them with a tutor who understands their specific curriculum and academic needs.

Tutors work directly with your student's coursework and Louisiana's academic standards, whether that's mastering grade-level math concepts, building reading comprehension skills, or preparing for state assessments. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to target exactly where your student is struggling and build confidence in the specific areas your school emphasizes.

While Lafayette's average student-teacher ratio of 19.2:1 is reasonable, it still means individual students can get lost in the shuffle, especially in subjects like math or writing where personalized feedback matters most. One-on-one tutoring fills that gap by giving your student dedicated attention to work through challenging concepts at their own pace, something that's difficult to achieve in a classroom setting.

The tutor will start by understanding your student's current level, learning style, and specific goals—whether that's improving grades in a particular class, preparing for a state test, or building foundational skills. They'll assess what's working and what isn't, then create a personalized plan tailored to your student's needs and Lafayette's local curriculum.

Math and English are the most common subjects, especially as students progress through middle and high school where concepts become more abstract. Science, Louisiana History, test prep (for ACT and state assessments), and foreign languages are also popular. Whatever subject your student needs support in, Varsity Tutors can connect you with an expert tutor.

Tutors are experienced educators and subject matter experts who understand how to teach effectively one-on-one. They're familiar with Louisiana's curriculum standards and know how to explain concepts in ways that click for different learners. All tutors go through a vetting process to ensure they can deliver quality instruction for students in Lafayette.

Tutoring schedules work around your family's life—whether your student needs help after school, on weekends, or during summer break. You can adjust frequency and timing based on what works best, whether that's weekly sessions or intensive help before a big test or assignment deadline.

Contact Varsity Tutors and let us know your student's grade level, subject, and what they need help with. We'll match them with a tutor who fits their learning style and academic goals, and you can start personalized instruction right away. Most families see their student more engaged and confident within the first few sessions.
