My name is Nicole Kappel. I have been involved in education since I was young. My first experience was tutoring general coursework for students grade 3-5. After that, I continued tutoring friends who needed help with math coursework for many years. After I began college, I started working at a Children's Museum helping Biology Education students create lesson plans to teach science to students age 11-14 and also to give them the tools to teach those topics to younger children later on. While pursuing my Master's degree in Biology, I taught several college level laboratory courses including "Bio 101", "Biological Diversity", "Botany", "Economic Botany", and "Ecology & Conservation of Plants". I have also worked as an Environmental Educator teaching ages 4-10 about science, nature, and other related topics.I love to teach and to help students to understand concepts as well as to become independent learners. My strengths in teaching Math, Science, and testing will be an asset to any student. I look forward to using my skills to help students to succeed.

I recently retired from teaching science after 16 years in the classroom including high school and middle school. I also taught algebra and pre-calculus at a community college in my spare time. I miss my interactions with students and find that tutoring is very rewarding. My favorite moment is when I see the "light bulb" showing that a student understands what they need. I believe that understanding why a solution works is much more important than simply memorizing. Earning my master's degree in education and becoming a teacher was my mid-life crisis. Before that, I worked in industry as a chemical engineer and then a project manager for many years after earning my Bachelor of Science at Cornell University. While I tutor a range of subjects, my favorites are chemistry and physics because I think that they are the most interesting! However, I also help students with math and algebra because a solid foundation in these is critical for success in science.

I believe that the most meaningful learning comes out of excitement, and that it is a teacher's job to find what is exciting for each student. Cultivating an environment where students are excited--not just about the material and new perspectives it brings, but also about the process of learning together--is essential. I strive to create an environment where the student feels known, valued, respected, and capable--emboldened to take risks, meet challenges, and share their thoughts with confidence. Education is fundamentally a partnership between student and teacher, and I will endeavor to help my students tap into their natural curiosity, get excited about their discoveries, and put themselves in a position to show and grow their strengths.

I have loved science all my life! When I was younger I wanted to be a veterinarian, so to get exposure with animals, I worked at the zoo for four years. I learned a lot, and was able to share my knowledge with the campers during the summer. Finishing high school, and going into college, I still loved science, especially biology, but my focus shifted towards the human body. Not only did I excel in my classes, but I was again given the opportunity to share my knowledge by becoming a tutor, a teaching assistant in the biology labs, and even a supplemental instructor for some of the beginner courses. My passion for sharing everything I've learned has been stifled in the past year or so, so I am excited for the opportunity to continue tutoring. I like to make my sessions engaging, but also circle back to the big picture. I know that I was always curious about where a lesson was going, and I want to make sure any students I help has an understanding for why the current topic is so important. I am a fourth-year medical student beginning my Family Medicine residency in the fall. I received my Bachelor of Science in Biology from St. Edward's University, Human Anatomy Specialization certification from the Univeristy of Michigan, and am a certified EMT (ACLS, BLS, PALS).The way I learned was by breaking complex topics into easily digestible pieces and looking at things from different points of view. I am very much a visual learner, so I draw (pretty much everything) out.I began tutoring in high school and fell in love with helping students find a way to use their strengths to overcome their learning obstacles.During college, I worked as a student tutor specializing in introductory and advanced Biology, Human Physiology, academic and scientific writing, and academic coaching.While I enjoy all of the subjects that I tutor, I am most passionate about Academic Coaching. During high school, I struggled to simply keep up with my courses, much less "succeed". I am very focused on growth and self improvement and I thrive helping other people achieve their own goals and reach new heights.When I was 19, I decided I wanted to serve my county by becoming an Officer in the Navy, and ideally a Navy Seal. I realized that to serve anyone or anything to your best capacity, it requires that you have a vision for WHO you want to be and the belief in yourself that you can get there though consistent hard work. Whatever your goal is, there IS a way to get there. That is why I am a tutor, because it is amazing to help and encourage other people as they complete their own journeys of goal setting, challenging themselves, growing, achieving their goals, and then setting even higher ones. My own academic experience has taught me that often the difference between a fulfilling, exciting experience and a difficult, draining one, is how invested the teacher is; in my best classes, the professors have walked with me every step of the way, and I have achieved much more because of that.
