I am a currently a sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. I am majoring in Physics with a Concentration in Chemical Principles. I am also minoring in Creative Writing. Throughout my schooling, I have thrived in all subjects. However, my favorites are Science and Writing/English. I find that the two have similar way in promoting creativity. Not surprisingly, I will be tutoring Physics, Chemistry and Writing. Additionally, I will be tutoring for ACT prep. I took the test officially three times and was successful each time and believe that I can share effective tips on how to increase scores in each subject. In my free time, I like to play sports like football and basketball. I also like to read novels and poems. My favorites are by Kurt Vonnegut and Jack Kerouac. I am a strong believer in education being the seeds of opportunity and hope to share my passion of learning with my students.

Current Undergrad Student, Electrical Engineering Northwestern University
6+ Years Tutoring

I am currently a rising Junior at Northwestern University studying Electrical and Computer Engineering. In my studies I am focusing on Robotics and Control Systems (think developing robots like Boston Dynamics or designing algorithms that allow rockets to land on their own like SpaceX.) I also am a member of Northwestern's solar car racing team, NUSolar, and I am the academic chair for the Tau Delta chapter of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity. In my experiences as a student I have realized how important it is to have individuals that are able to help as you progress through school, especially when you are struggling. To this end I want to be a great academic resource for students and help them solidly the concepts which will help them succeed in their academic endeavors and beyond.

BA Harvard College
1+ Years Tutoring

I am a rising sophomore at Harvard College and am about to declare as a Mechanical Engineering concentrator, working towards a Bachelor of Science degree. I've always enjoyed sharing my knowledge with my peers and those around me and have done so in both formal and informal settings. I've been a tutor for both Math and Spanish programs in high school and enjoyed the strides I made with students. I am willing to tutor any subject I have a background in, but am strong in mathematics, the sciences, Spanish, history, writing, and ACT prep. I enjoy teaching mathematics most due to the joy I can see in children once they master a topic and can answer even pointed questions meant to stump them, and maybe even put their knowledge to real world use. As a tutor, I like to give a strong foundation to orient my student, and then gradually grant them more freedom and independence until they can feel themselves grasp the concept, pointing out pitfalls or common errors along the way; teachers who used these methods on me always left the most lasting impressions. Outside of my studies, I really enjoy listening to music, both old favorites and new interests, reading classics, and gaming/playing basketball with my friends.

I am exploring my creativity by pursuing a double major in Asian Languages and Cultures with a focus in Korean, studying abroad in South Korea as a Benjamin A. Gilman Scholar, leading workshops that teach 3D printing and CAD for undergraduate students as the president of 3D4E, advocating for the first-generation and low-income student community as the Outreach Chair of the Quest+ Scholars Network, and getting involved with the Society of Women Engineers' outreach committee. I currently hold a work-study position as an administrative clerical aide in the Institute of Sustainability and Energy at Northwestern and was an undergraduate researcher in the John Rogers Lab. As I look forward with aspirations of applying to graduate school, areas of research in biomedical engineering and biotechnology that I am particularly interested in include biomaterials, pharmaceuticals, and drug delivery systems. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy learning on my own and sharing my experience and knowledge with my peers and other students. I hope to make use of my experiences with academics and learning in high school and so far in my undergraduate career in order to effectively tutor students who may be experiencing the same struggles in learning that I also experienced.

1+ Years Tutoring

I am a second year law student at the University of Chicago who hails from the San Francisco Bay Area! I tutor the SAT, ESL, and Spanish. I was an AVID tutor in high school, and after college I taught an ESL class and tutored a high school student in Spanish. In law school, I am involved with the Lawyers in the Classroom program. My tutoring philosophy is based on listening to students work through problems and helping them to spot their confusions or incorrect assumptions. I believe students learn much better when they aren't simply told the right answer or right reasoning; they need to get there on their own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students throughout Highland Park with personalized tutoring support. With 14 schools and two school districts serving the area, we work with students from both District 112 and District 113, as well as private and charter schools, helping them succeed regardless of which institution they attend.

Highland Park students frequently seek support in math, science, and standardized test preparation, particularly as they progress through middle and high school. We also work with students on writing skills, foreign languages (especially Spanish and Mandarin), and AP exam preparation to help them meet Illinois academic standards and stay competitive.

Your first session is an opportunity for the tutor to understand your learning style, current skill level, and specific goals. The tutor will assess where you stand academically and work with you to create a personalized plan that addresses your unique needs—whether that's catching up in a challenging subject or preparing for an upcoming exam.

While Highland Park's average student-teacher ratio is 12.7:1, personalized 1-on-1 instruction offers something classrooms can't: complete focus on your individual learning needs. Research shows that one-on-one tutoring significantly accelerates learning because the tutor can adjust pacing, teaching methods, and content in real-time based on your progress—something that's difficult in even smaller group settings.

Many students see noticeable improvement within 4-6 weeks of consistent tutoring, though the timeline depends on your starting point and goals. For standardized test prep or catching up in a subject, some students benefit from more intensive support over a shorter period, while others prefer ongoing tutoring throughout the school year for sustained progress.

Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who have demonstrated expertise in their subjects, often including teachers, graduate students, and subject-matter specialists. Each tutor is vetted for their knowledge and ability to teach effectively, ensuring you get instruction from someone who truly understands the material and how to help students learn it.

Pricing varies based on the subject, tutor qualifications, and your location within Highland Park. We offer flexible scheduling to fit your family's needs—whether you need weekly sessions during the school year, intensive prep before a big test, or support during a specific unit. Contact us for a personalized quote based on your goals.

Absolutely. Tutors are familiar with Illinois academic standards and can help you master the content and skills expected at your grade level. Whether you're working on Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) preparation, meeting Common Core standards in math, or preparing for state science assessments, personalized instruction helps you build the knowledge and confidence needed to succeed.
