Spanish Tutoring review by Marcella in Ann Arbor, MI
Today was my second session with this student and I was very pleased with how fast she is picking up the material of a new language. Today we reviewed the vocabulary from our first session last week and added some more introductory vocabulary to our lexicon. I spent the majority of the session introducing her to the simple present tense, and she was able to pick it up rather quickly. I am encouraged greatly by her quickness, good questions, and enthusiasm!

Spanish Tutoring review by Maureen in Ann Arbor, MI
The student and I had our first meeting for Spanish tutoring. We discussed her goals for our work together, both over the summer and during the school year. She and I chose an appropriate textbook for us to use during our sessions. She demonstrates an understanding of basic Spanish grammar and vocabulary. She asked for help with specific grammar points, including direct and indirect object pronouns.

Spanish Tutoring review by Elisabeth in Ann Arbor, MI
This was my first session with this student. I showed her some new online resources she can use to practice verb conjugation, pronunciation and other basic skills. She showed me her Spanish materials from last year and we went over some of the concepts she felt she glossed over in the past such a using double negatives. We also reviewed the past tense. Her written test scores are very high but she is sometimes shy when it comes to speaking. She seems very eager to improve.

Spanish Tutoring review by Pam in Ann Arbor, MI
The student and I spent the first half hour conversing about her travels and upcoming family decisions. We then discussed a reading that she had done from our reading text and went over some questions and answers from the book. We decided to only briefly review the past tense, using verbs that are new for her, and then go on to practicing when to use the imperfect vs. the past tenses. She will write some examples, using new vocabulary, for next time. I also showed her part of a video (Que dificil es aprender el espanol) and encouraged her to watch the rest of it for listening practice.

Spanish Tutoring review by Michele in Ann Arbor, MI
I began this session by reviewing the student's homework with her. She was able to identify most verbs and the corresponding tenses. She has difficulty recognizing the preterite tense if the verb does not have an accent on the last letter. We then continued to work on reflexive verbs. I had her complete two exercises, and she did very well in these. I then covered reflexive verbs that hold a different meaning than verbs without the pronoun. For homework I asked her to complete exercise 54.1 and to finish the Unidad 1 homework.

Spanish Tutoring review by Daniel in Ann Arbor, MI
We spent the beginning of the session recapping previously covered material to make sure that nothing had been forgotten before moving on to our new topic - personalities. We reviewed the assigned vocabulary for personalities and then spent the remaining time in the session translating sentences into Spanish related to personalities designed to highlight some of the key grammatical themes of the chapter - matching plurality and gender of nouns and adjectives, basic conjugation in the present tense, and the conjugation of ser in the present tense. The student said that he feels weakest on grammar and strongest on vocabulary, an analysis I agree with based on his performance in translation exercises. So, next week, we plan to focus primarily on intensive practice of the grammar we've learned so far before moving on to any new topics.
