Much of my initial tutoring experience was with Spanish-speaking children who, while very smart, were struggling because of the language barrier. Because of this, I understand that there are many factors involved in the success of a student. I strive to understand each of my students as a unique individual, allowing me to successfully pinpoint the most effective teaching style for him/her.As a self-proclaimed jack-of-all-trades, I prefer a well-rounded and holistic approach to education. Memorization can only take a student so far, and a genuine grasp of a subject can only be achieved through an understanding of its many nuances. Tutoring is a terrific method for reinforcing what the students experience in the classroom, and I think it should also be used as an opportunity to approach the material in a fresh new way.

Immediately after I obtained my PhD in Medical Microbiology at Pasteur Institute of Lille in France, I decided to come to the US in order to continue my research adventure as a Post-doctoral fellow in the field of tuberculosis. My major interest was in identification of genes in the bacterium responsible for human tuberculosis (Mycobacterium tuberculosis). During my post-doctoral fellowship, I realized that though I was enjoying research, I was however missing interactions with students. Therefore, I decided at the end of my post-doctoral position to seek an academic position that would give me the opportunity to fulfill my dream of interacting and above all sharing my educational experience with students. Ten years after deciding to join the academic world, I feel that I have found myself and that I am fulfilling my purpose on earth. What I love the most about teaching is to bring basic biology concepts to life through my research experience. I am able to illustrate basic biology concepts with clear and simple examples that my students can relate to.When I start interacting with a student or a group of students, I get to know them first. Getting to know my students is a key aspect in determining the best approach to convey complicated biology concepts to them. Thus, I strive as much as possible to adapt my teaching to my students while keeping high academic standards essential for producing highly competitive students and excellent citizens.Beside teaching, I love performing woodwork projects, spending time around my house on landscaping and construction/repair projects. In addition, I love hiking and I love spending time with my family.

I love tutoring because it gives me the opportunity to help others enjoy the experience of learning as much as I do. Whether we are editing an essay or reviewing for an exam, I bring a natural passion and energy to my tutoring sessions that inspires my students to discover their own paths towards understanding. By creating a safe environment in which students are encouraged to develop their own critical faculties and to ask the question of "why?", I hope to equip all my clients with a thorough understanding that allows them to achieve mastery over their desired subject matter. After receiving my Bachelor's in English Writing from Azusa Pacific University and my Master's in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary, the bulk of my tutoring experience comes from my work as a Consultant for Fuller's Writing Center. Working as a Consultant for Fuller's Writing Center has given me extensive experience in providing writing and editing instruction to graduate students, which I have also put to use as I have continued to work with my own personal high school and college-level clients. While I enjoy providing instruction for a variety of subjects ranging from history to psychology, I am especially interested in the process of helping others as they learn how to express their views and opinions through the written word. I believe writing is a useful skill in just about any walk of life, and I consider it my privilege and purpose to help others discover their written voice. When I am not working with my wonderful clients, you might find me reading a dusty old novel, watching some sports, playing too many video games, or out walking with my dog, Hans.

How could you say your own language is the most beautiful of all if you cannot compare it?Learning a foreign language and getting to know an entirely new culture always fascinated me and it has also made me a more open minded person. I studied French in Paris while teaching German. I have a degree in romance languages, linguistics and art history from the University of Heidelberg. I took a detour from the academic world by exploring the language of media, marketing and public relations in the Black Forest and Bavaria. In Los Angeles I was immersed in the unique tongue of the entertainment industry. I continued teaching German and, along the way, became a Certified Life Coach. This has allowed me to connect to the language of peoples souls. In the beautiful mountains of New Mexico I became a writer and published a book in Germany. Everyone has different reasons for learning a language. Of course it is not easy. It takes time and effort but it is well worth it. I would enjoy introducing you to the German culture, as well as the language, in order to make your learning experience fun, effective and most importantly, successful.

One of my core values can be summed up in two words: "Students First." I tell all students, online and offline, that if I am not in class or asleep, it is an office hour. I believe that it is my duty to be as accessible as possible. I believe that all of my students find comfort in the fact that there is someone they can turn to for clarification on a myriad of topics.I also bring a firm understanding that many of our students have a great deal of responsibilities. Along with working full time and maintaining their studies many students are "sandwiched" between taking care of their children as well as caring for their parents. With this understanding comes the requirement to be flexible, patient and empathetic.A cornerstone of my pedagogical philosophy is that I strive to help students understand difficult concepts through meaningful examples taken from their daily lives. If a student is going to take an interest in the subject matter, they are more likely to retain this information. I like to think of it as a sort of "School House Rock" approach to learning. For example, I was able to convey the microeconomic concept of the production possibilities frontier by having the students visualize a restaurant that produced two goods: salads and sandwiches. The production possibilities frontier is a simple model designed to depict the production capabilities of an economy given common resources, while assuming there are two broad classes of products, consumer goods and capital goods. Traditional economic textbooks love to use a "guns and butter" metaphor, but I have found that the salads and sandwiches example is much more effective. Students are able to quickly understand that they can use common ingredients like meat, cheese, vegetables, bread (rolls for the sandwich or croutons for the salad), and dressing to make sandwiches or salads and, in turn, maximize earnings.Unless the student is destined to become a contestant on "Jeopardy," I do not see the value in students having a plethora of academic knowledge at the ready. It is far more important that students are information literate and that they understand what information is needed, where to find it, how to evaluate it, and how to use it in everyday life.

Greetings! You have, through sheer virtue of your reading this document, decided to consider tutoring as an auxiliary means of learning, to which I applaud you. It is my firm belief, established through both observation and experience, that one-on-one teaching is an excellent (I would argue essential) way to bolster one's learning; for as much as the broad curricula of the day is expertly designed to fit the learning needs of the masses, it will, by nature, leave gaps in the micro-cognition of each student. This is where I and many others come in: to fill those gaps. For true mastery of a subject or field, I believe that having a teacher to take the time and effort with a student towards detailed learning can only, in time, prove beneficial in the grander understanding of a given topic. Every student (everyone, truly, for are we not all students?), in varying degrees of severity, learns differently, takes in the world around them differently, and manifests that information differently. No one teaching method could ever account for the infinite variable of personality and general humanness; hence the importance of one-on-one teaching. I take my position as a tutor seriously for this reason; I approach students with the understanding that they will not all be the same, and that each requires consideration for their respective characters, abilities, and desires. In short, I offer students a chance to learn above the common tide.

Varsity Tutors connects students across San Antonio's 42 school districts and 624 schools with personalized tutoring support. With over 333,000 students in the San Antonio area, we work with families from SAISD, North East ISD, Northside ISD, and other districts throughout the region to provide customized instruction that fits each student's unique needs.
Texas has specific learning standards across math, reading, science, and social studies that students must master at each grade level. Tutors work with San Antonio students to strengthen foundational skills, build confidence in tested subjects, and develop the critical thinking strategies needed to succeed on STAAR assessments and in the classroom. Personalized instruction allows tutors to focus on the exact areas where each student needs support.
San Antonio students frequently seek support in math (especially algebra and geometry), reading comprehension, and science—subjects that are heavily tested under Texas standards. Many students also benefit from tutoring in English language arts to strengthen writing skills, and in test preparation for STAAR, SAT, and ACT exams. Tutors can also help with Spanish language instruction, a valuable skill in San Antonio's diverse community.
With an average student-teacher ratio of 14.5:1 across San Antonio's school districts, classroom teachers often have limited time for individualized attention. Personalized 1-on-1 tutoring fills that gap by providing dedicated support focused entirely on a student's learning style, pace, and specific challenges—something that's difficult to achieve in a traditional classroom setting.
The first session is designed to build rapport and understand your student's goals, strengths, and areas for improvement. A tutor will assess your student's current knowledge in the subject, discuss what they're working on in school, and create a personalized plan for how tutoring can best support their learning. This foundation helps tutors tailor instruction to match your student's needs from day one.
Yes. While many San Antonio families connect with tutors for math, reading, and science support, tutors also help with subjects like social studies, foreign languages (including Spanish), test preparation, writing skills, and even study strategies. Whatever subject your student is taking in school, Varsity Tutors can help match them with a tutor who has expertise in that area.
San Antonio's 42 school districts each have their own curriculum frameworks and pacing guides, which is why personalized tutoring is so valuable. Tutors work with students from SAISD, North East ISD, Northside ISD, and other districts throughout the area and understand how to support students within their specific district's approach to learning. When you connect with a tutor, you can share details about your student's school and curriculum so instruction aligns perfectly.
Yes. Many San Antonio families use summer tutoring to help students maintain skills over the break, get ahead before the new school year, or catch up on concepts that were challenging during the year. Summer is also a great time for test prep (STAAR, SAT, ACT) or to build confidence in a subject before advancing to the next level. Tutors can work with your schedule to provide flexible support during the summer months.
