I am passionate about helping my students learn the materials in each of their individual learning styles. No two students are identical and are able to learn the same. REGENTS U.S History Tutoring FAQ
Students in New York State are required to pass a U.S. History Regents exam in order to earn a high school diploma. The test is generally administered at the end of 11th grade, giving students who fail the opportunity to try again as seniors in high school. If you or your child are having a hard time preparing for the exam, Varsity Tutors can connect you with an experienced U.S. History Regents tutor to help you work toward academic success.
Here is the format of the exam:
Part 1: 50 multiple-choice questions pertaining to American history, from the Revolutionary period to modern time (55% of total score)
Part 2: one thematic essay question (15%)
Part 3: seven short-answer questions based on documents provided (15%). After that, students must compose a second essay using at least four of the seven provided documents to support their argument (15%)
Most American history classes go in chronological order, meaning that students study the Revolution in September and get tested on it in June. U.S. History Regents tutoring sessions can focus on older material if it's not as fresh in a student's mind to improve the efficiency of time spent studying. A tutor may also create flashcards containing a variety of important bullet points studied throughout the course to make U.S. History Regents prep feel less overwhelming.
Students only have three hours to complete the entire examination, so time management is an important component of test prep. A tutor may administer timed practice tests during U.S. History Regents tutoring sessions to give their pupil a sense of how long they will have on exam day. They may also share test-taking strategies to eliminate some of the incorrect responses on the multiple-choice section even if they are unsure of the correct answer.
Likewise, some students get intimidated by the prospect of writing two essays. A U.S. History Regents tutor may demonstrate how to outline your thoughts before you begin writing to ensure that you include all of the requisite details. In addition, taking notes as you read the documents in Part 3 may help you quickly identify which ones you can use on the associated essay.
