Session Summaries by SAT Math Tutors

Portsmouth, VA SAT Math tutoring
We began our session today by going over the homework that I assigned from yesterday. The student did better than before. I felt that we had spent a significant amount of time on the subject, and to avoid burnout I switched topics over to math. The new topics we covered included imaginary numbers and vertex form. I assigned the remainder of it for homework.

We went over questions that he missed on his diagnostic test and discussed strategies for each of them. We also went through one math section of a practice SAT, which he did very well at. I assigned him to complete the next two sections of the same practice test for next time.

We reviewed SAT math, including the angle measurements of a 1, 2, and root 3 triangle. The student was focused on problem solving. I taught her that when there is no solution to a system of equations, it means they never intersect and have the same slope. The student is quicker at problem-solving than in earlier sessions.

As this session happened while the student had three AP tests left (Bio, Stats, and Government), we tried to focus on any remaining questions he had that could actually help him, without cramming and making him overly stressed. We spent the majority of the session working on a short-answer packet for his AP Government class, as both a refresher for the exam, and because he needed to turn it in for a grade. There were quite a few small details we needed to review from early in the year, like nullification, but he was especially strong in details on major court cases. He felt prepared for the Government exam, but since the packet was 150 questions, it was a good choice to use our time to work on it so that he could review for his other tests on his own time.

Today, we continued working on sample math problems from the SAT. We reviewed concepts such as the application of the quadratic formula and linear equations. We covered new topics such as substitution/system of equations, completing a square, and the vertex formula. The student will be taking a practice math test before our next session on Wednesday so that she can get some additional practice for the upcoming test. I will be sending her additional worksheets covering these new topics, so that she can get more practice with them.
